Is it possible to install vinyl flooring over carpet? Yes! Well, some of the time! Interested in learning more? Check out our video. - Jak na to + styl
My husband and I (both in our seventies) just finished laying 24square metres of laminate flooring on top of our old carpet. Not a problem! Came up looking beautiful and even. The only thing was our sore backs and shoulders!
Did you use plywood? and was the carpet you had previously installed thick padded?
We used 8mm solid laminate planks. And are carpet was well worn! I don't know how well it would lay on thick pile carpet, but even in the places our carpet was still reasonable it laid just fine.
dragon flies that’s awesome ! Good job!
Hi. Where did you buy your laminate flooring from? I have carpet too in a rental apartment. I would like to lay a temporary floating floor. Did it cost alot to do your floor/s? Also, did you use plywood under it? Thanks!
Do you use anything under aside from carpet?
Love this video, their no other rental friendly videos that tells you how to install hardwood floor tiles over shabby carpet. I will most definitely be doing this if the home me and my husband next have carpet. I can't stand carpet.
Anita Erickson touché
Great video
I love my new place but haven’t had used carpet/flooring in years and I just can’t stand it
Flooring Inc shows a good video on applying wood over carpet
SlayWitJ this is flooring inc page lol
Anita Erickson Carpets are nasty. They use them to insulate the floors in old houses that lose a lot of heat, but I think they are germy and gross. No matter how clean you keep them, you can’t bleach them like you can other flooring and I don’t like that. 🤷🏽
I had no idea this was possible, but I'm SO glad I found this! I hate the carpet in my basement and couldn't find an inexpensive solution. This is perfect.
So glad I found this I needed this because I can't afford to remove the carpet up
Same here. I was soooooo close
Same here
And it saves the carpet underneath from ear and tear for when you move out if you’re renting!
Did your carpet get moldy? How did it go?
@@andrewalday7834 I mean how tf would it get moldy?
I didn't think this was possible until I googled it! Thank you!
Thanks for this! I seen this done before so this window is just confirmation that I can do all things. I'm living in a place that looks like it needs a new look, touch up. I'm sure that planks would work best over carpet. Plus, when moving it should be easy to remove if needed.
Love this video!
Thank you so much for this. I’m moving into an apartment with carpet just like your first example. I didn’t want to try anything too crazy, so this will work perfectly.
I know this is old but how did it work? I can't stand the carpet in my apartment, it kills my allergies soooo bad and I just want hard floors again :(
This is very helpful. We are planning to do this in our basement due to very old carpet. My husband's concern is moisture that might create mold underneath the vinyl planks. What would you recommend?
THANK YOU, EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. GREAT!!!
Hi, have you tried putting very heavy furniture in it like a hardwood cabinet/bookshelf? Does it bend and affect the clip in parts?
So glad I found this video !❤️
Thank you for this! It's exactly what I was looking for!
Great truthful advise vid👍...for a 12'x25' room, what direction would you recommend install..across 12'...or down 25'❓thx😊
This is just what I’m looking for. Great video👍🏼
Great VIDEO
I'm a general contractor(not a flooring expert) but the carpet will mold 100% due to the natural moisture in the air. You'll be replacing the carpet when you go to remove this anyways. Not to mention I wouldn't want to breath that for any extended period of time. Be careful!
I live in an apartment with carpet. I have cats. I can't remove the carpet because I rent. If I did this but not wall to wall will I still get mold? I was thinking 8x10 plywood with sticky vinyl on it. Like big throw rugs made out of plywood and sticky vinyl. Leaving the border of the room exposed. Would that get enough air? And, I could lift up the plank panel to clean underneath and check for mold. I would throw all of this away when I move. What do you think?
Thank you for this, my exact thought whenever I see the hack!
i think ur right, mold and moisture just welling up. i'm pulling my carpet
I was thinking the same thing! All those germs trap underneath the plywood gettin nice and warm and cozy! No way! Of course the video shows what appears to be brand new carpet, but for those who have pets that have burden your carpet…. I’d say treat it like leftovers… when in doubt throw it out. I certainly wouldn’t place plywood over carpet, but best of everything to those who can and do! ❤
I have carpet in my basement, can I use what is shown in the video to create a sprung floor with plywood over carpet and finish with vinyl. Will be using this as home dance studio. Will the clips unlock with pressure and tapping of foot?
Very helpful information. Thank you!
Thank you :)
I live in a generally humid area. Would this not be a viable option for me in regards to mold forming underneath the floating floor? AOAO Doesn’t allow vinyl or laminate flooring due to sound but my wife has allergies that always flare up due to Carpet and what they hold
i can’t wait to do this, has anyone experienced mold or mildew due to moisture? i have a bit of a thicker carpet like the second example
so helpful!
Could this cause mold on the carpet underneath?
Hi. It’s very helpful video. Don’t i have to use any layment ? And what does it mean ‘lay them in the “opposite direction” when i put more than one plywood board’? Thanks!
she means to lay the plywood with the seams running opposite, so if the seems go east to west lay the flooring south to north.
What's the best plank to use for laying over carpet?
I wonder if this could b done on high plated carpeted stairs Ive been looking for a solution this is a very helpful video for the other parts of my rental apt thank you
Brilliant. Love it. Thanks.
With the plywood on. Does it still feel soft to step in with the installed floor plank over the carpet? Thank u
👍😍Awesome video. 😃Now I actually feel like I can install one of these flooring types confidently over the carpet in the small cabin floor area on my boat!!! 💞
What did you use in the end and where to get it??
Would 4mil LVT be okay over an industrial carpet (glued down with zero shag or pad) and a bit of unleveled wave to it. Its an old building with an original concrete floor.
Just wondering the durability of Vinyl flooring over Lowppile carpet? I have low pile carpet but still i can feel some kind of cushion. does it be stable and not break if i put vinyl floor over that
Genius! Thanks 🙏🏾
Thank you so much for this!!!
You are very welcome!
How do you prevent mould underneath / on the carpet? Aside from usual things like a dehumidifier. And how long can you leave the floor for on top of the carpet? Thanks.
Good question! I never would have thought about mould!
This is a genuine question because I’m thinking of doing this and you bring up something I never considered so I want to know what came to mind.... what moisture would accumulate between the carpet and the planks if planks are waterproof? Do you think there could possibly be condensation building in between them orrrr are you thinking something different? also, do you think this would be an issue for an apartment that is 2nd floor?
@@Rio-su3yp I am not an expert on flooring installation but I do some interior desogn. I would think that because it is not sealed properly & because people are always breathing out moisture there is bound to be a possibility for mould in the long term. It only takes a little bit of humidity to be trapped to create a damp area in my opinion. Since the edges are not going to be totally sealed.
But in the short term for say 2 weeks a temporary floor would be ok if you use a dehumidifier.
I say rhis based on experience at shows/expos with temporary floors & as a photographer using temp floors & seeing objects go mouldy such as my cat scratching post :) when a small amount of moisture got underneath it. I would love to think it would be easy but I think if you are renting or want to protect your carpet, put a piece of cut vinyl or carpet or rug on the top & lift it up to clean it regularly.
Nice plain rugs e.g. white blend an ugly floor away from being visually dominant. Until you can have the floor you want.
@flooringinc can you provide any insight or recommendation for this. This is a very good question.
I would think you're not likely to get much mould underneath/on the carpet since it will be sealed not only by plywood but by your new flooring too. You could always use baseboard trims to better seal it. I wouldn't be concerned about it. Use mahogany plywood if you can because it's quite moisture resistant.
What planks were these? Not sure how to choose them from lowes
I want to do this for my bedroom I’m renting, but the door is already kind of close the the carpet ,after I do this will it mess with my door?
Can you specify which vinyl flooring you used?
what thickness plywood did you use?
What did I just witness??????? Who knew? A game changer!
If we leave the baseboards, can we add quarter round?
This is great but would this fit under a door?
Is it works?
Is it ok to hv vinyl flooring over carpet, will there be mold problem
I hate dust and apartment carpets are filled with them this is such a great solution.
I have a fairly low carpet. I want to put a vinyl sheet over it as the vinyl planks are quite expensive. Do you have a video on this?
You can use a vinyl sheet as long as your plywood is completely even, as the sheet will telegraph subfloor imperfections.
@@FlooringInc what did you use to stick plywood on the carpet to prevent it from moving?
Can you do a vinyl sheet for the second option?
I wish you leave around my area Long Island to installed my floor
Thanks for the video. I live in an apartment and Strata doesn't allow hardwoods. So I was looking for some alternative solutions to put on my carpets. I will definitely consider this. Do you think it would work without the plywood underneath? My carpets are kind in between low and high pile type.
Great question! If your carpet is thicker you may want to add that or underlayment to help even out the surface for your vinyl :)
Flooring Inc. I too live in a rental apartment with carpet. Are most apartment rentals cool about someone installing a temporary floating floor? How long does it take to put down a floating floor over carpet? can it be finished in one day? Thanks.
Could I just put down two layers of semi rigid flooring In opposing directions? Be easier to bring in.
Thanks for the video. My apartment is wall to wall carpet. Should I be able to do this under doors?
You'll need to measure the plywood and planks you're using to ensure you have room with your current doors. We've seen it done before, but it depends on the planks and the space. SPC vinyl would be great for this since it's so thin.
What to use to stick the plywood onto the carpet to prevent it from moving or raising?
If its measured properly it should fit snug enough to not move around. That's also why they suggested to use the tape at the seams of each piece of plywood to make sure it stays put. Hope this answers your question.
When laying LVP over very thin carpet, would you suggest laying only an under liner mat such as DMX as a moisture barrier, or laying a plywood over the underliner mat to make sure it’s all level?
Hello Christopher, this would depend on your application. If you are working with a commercial grade carpet which is typically very thin and your area is level you may only need to lay the moisture barrier. If the carpet is a bit to plush to help provide an even surface you can then add plywood.
Flooring Inc Thank you!!!
@@FlooringInc Hi. Are you saying we have to use a moisture barrier? I didn’t see that mentioned in the video. Thanks.
At 3:19, what are the dark things leaning up against the floorboards?
How do you install on a staircase?
Have you had any problems with mildew or mold under the flooring due to the high piled carpet?
Hello Cody, great question! As long as you do the proper install you should not experience this issue. If you are concerned about spills or if this will be in an area that generally gets moisture you may want to include an underlayment with a vapor barrier.
@@FlooringInc Should I place the underlayment between the carpet and plywood? Thanks!
@@HN-iq8bu Yes, that's correct.
@@FlooringIncHello! If I placed the underlayment between the carpet and plywood, wouldn't that only protect what's above the underlayment? Leaving the carpet underneath susceptible to mold and moisture issues?
Could you put the name on the plank in the comment for the thick carpet?
Is the flooring expensive ?
Has anyone done this and how has it held up? I want to put thin plywood down over the high pile with padding carpet first. This is an upstairs apartment and I worry that LVT without the carpet will be too noisy for the downstairs apartment
Hi, If I wasn't able to install it by myself, do you have any recommendations who would be able to in the DC area? Or should I try my local Home Depot/Lowes?
Annelyse Uwera did you ever find someone? Selamnesh
can you link the 1/4" plywood?
Amazon
what is the brand of the flooring example on the thin carpet? Trancore? Couldn't find that.
Thank you for reaching out! May I ask if you please PM us the details so that we can help? Thank you!
If you live in an apartment how are you to remove the baseboards? I really want to try this, and this video was very helpful.
There is no renter friendly way to install this with satisfaction. You will need to lay down large sheets of plywood in addition to removing the baseboards. It will be grueling work if you want it down right.
*Mold liked this video*
What about sheet vinyl over carpet in a rental unit?
Yes u can but u may want to check with your land lord first. The video says this option is great for rentals
How do you shut the door if there’s been two layers of flooring added on top, doesn’t that make it too high?
Can you trim the bottom of the door?
If you can’t trim the door you’d have to leave out the area where the door open & close
I need help who can install the temp floor over my apartment friendly carpet
what could I use to waterproof/protect the carpet underneath? and trap a strong odors?
Vinyl Flooring is a new type of floor material made of stone-plastic composite material. It consists of a 5-layer structure, including wear-resistant layer, UV coating, decorative layer, SPC core layer and backing layer. The advantages of Vinyl Flooring are environmental protection, waterproof, mildew-proof, wear-resistant, easy to clean, easy to install, corrosion-resistant and beautiful. It can better imitate the color and texture of other types of solid wood floors, ceramic tiles, floor tiles, etc.
What do you guys mean by “temporary floor”...is laying vinyl over carpet not a good idea to have for the long term?
That is a great question, Lily! In some instances, such as renting a home, a customer may only want the flooring while they are in the space until they move. They would be able to take the flooring up so that the original floor still remains. You are certainly able to keep this material down as long as you would like. I hope this answers your question 🙂
My baseboards have no clearance should I remove them and install ones higher up off the ground?
Use the baseboard as the wall (place spacers against the baseboards). Attach quarter round to the baseboard after you're done to cover the gap between the baseboard and new flooring left by the spacers. Remove the quarter round when you move out.
@@cecielisabet1690 3 years late but THANK YOU
I appreciate you being kind enough to respond
What about mold?
Does it ruin the carpet underneath?
Which vinyl is not toxic?
Question: Why still put the spacers if you don't remove the baseboards? Can it be done without it?
I was told they use the spacers because houses and rooms naturally shift over time.
Attach quarter round to the baseboard after you're done to cover the gap between the baseboard and new flooring left by the spacers. Remove the quarter round when you move out.
How do you prevent mold buildup on the higher thick carpets?
Hi Felicia, you can use an underlayment with a vapor barrier in areas that are prone to moisture.
Like plywood under?
@floorininc how do you do this?
What’s the point of the spacers?
Hi Kearra, the spacers allow room for expansion and contraction. We recommend them on most installs.
Can a laminate floor damage the carpet underneath ?
I wanna put a floor down in a room in my apartment without risking my damage deposit.
I am curious about this too.
Same
Anyone else wondering where to get her shoes?
Can anyone elaborate on removing the baseboards? This video is only so helpful since it mentions you should do that, but doesn’t go over how.
Different types of baseboards, typically held in with Brad nails. Crow bar or hammer with a screwdriver to pry off
So your supposed to remove baseboard and then reattach when finished?
Ya i dont u derstand that either
Attach quarter round to the baseboard after you're done to cover the gap between the baseboard and new flooring left by the spacers. Remove the quarter round when you move out.
Well yeah
I live in an apartment and is unable to remove the baseboards. Would I still be able to perfect a natural look?
Hello Nandi, you absolutely can! We do offer samples and you can see what best works with your existing baseboards so you have a cohesive look :)
Thank you stinky nasty rugs needed to be removed but with no help I need to lay flooring over them .. thanks again
For peel and stick planks how thick should my plywood be?
bump
Good question 🤔
Peel and stick can be placed right on top of most subfloors and you may not need to use plywood at all. What is your current subfloor?
@@FlooringInc likely carpet, that's most common in apartments
How thick should the plywood be?
The thinner the squishier?
Hello, would you be able to tell us more about your application?
My carpet is squishy and i want peel and stick planks how thick should i get the plywood. Thanks
Thank you, we have had customers with very similar applications and the thickness used was 1/2"
A real review of this video--The 1/4 inch plywood is super expensive and you can still feel the carpet underneath. I paid $31 a sheet and needed 5 sheets. That was the cheapest one. This video is helpful to an extent, but I should’ve gone with my instinct and gotten the 3/4 inch utility wood for half the price and better durability. I’m barely over 100 pounds and the 1/4 inch plywood underneath feels wobbly. I don’t know why every CZcams video on this content is pushing for the 1/4 inch plywood
Have you experienced any mold? I’m thinking of doing this but worried about all the comments mentioning thst
Hi. I'm looking to do this project in our living room. We are renting and the carpet is beige, is not as "fluffy" like the one in the video, but neither flat like a office floor carpet. Do you think using just a thick underlayment can I have the firmness to apply the planks? Thanks
Yes, you will want to try to compress this carpet as much as possible to provide a firm even surface. Another option is removing the carpet all together.
Best part is no adhesive to worry about.
01:48 Major fail.
That is the exact wrong way to use a utility knife.
Never place your hand in the path of the knife.
Non padded carpet of course!
Why does she keep calling it “temporary flooring”.?
I made it with Woodglut plans!
This video is 4 years old, but I hope the demonstrator learned not to run a utility knife right at her thumb before it was too late!
If you're going to spend the time and money putting down quarter inch plywood, why not just remove the carpet? It would be about the same amount of work and less costly.
not if it's glued to concrete!!
Not possible in a rental.
With the extra work and money of buying/using plywood you may as well get rid of the carpet!
btw you can cut carpet into small bits and put it into the bin or take it to the local dump ..
Some of us rent apartments where we are not allowed to remove the carpet
This sounds like a bad idea. Add plywood and planks on top of the carpet. I am surprised I don't see too many criticisms on this hack. I see 3 big problems:
1. the baseboards will need to be re-done. People considering this method probably have those short baseboard which means replacement for sure.
2. room door need to be cut since you you adding more than half an inch to the floor heights.
3. Transition into other rooms especially areas with existing tile or wood floors. Unless you are doing the entire space, the transition might be weird.
Also the purpose of using this method is to save trouble. Laying down plywood, re-doing base boards and cutting doors may not save you too much time and money over ripping out the old carpet.
Thank you!
This is for people who rent and can’t rip out carpet.

I have been installing flooring for 20 years. You are out of your mind if you install plank or any type of flooring over any carpet. Lol
Can you explain why? Genuinely curious.
You’re just mad cuz it will lose you money
Well, if you live in a building where they have 80/20 (80% carpet) rules you are out of options. I did have to cover a brand new floor with carpet just because of that, and I would be crazy enough to do this over the carpet just because I can't stand carpet.
Don't do it! Too much deflection/ movement will brake the locking mechanism!! Don't do it!!!
Why would anyone do this? Taking up old carpet is the simplest thing you can do.
This is expensive

As a professional flooring installer I will say this is a terrible idea. Plywood over carpet? The purchase of the plywood exceeded the cost of removing the old carpet. Leave the carpet, leave the smell. This video is pure Snake Oil.
I’m assuming this is a temporary fix for folks who can’t remove the carpet like renters. Do you have any alternative suggestions for people who can’t remove the carpet and want hardwood or some other type of flooring? Genuinely curious....
dejay9995 spend the money on moving to a place with better flooring, LVP is not cheap. Many rentals are switching to it so there are options out the in the rental market. One person posted on here to get plywood from amazon, which is absurd when a local lumber yard has all you need and doesn’t treat their employees like slaves. Finally I’ll say that you need not take my word for it, go look up what the major manufacturers installation requirements are for these floors. We pros have warranty issues we are liable for when we install these floors so we can’t get away with what this video is saying you can do. Notice how it’s geared for the do-it-yourselfers who don’t know how for over your head you’re going to be. I can’t even tell you how many things I see wrong with this idea but look up how the pros install a whole house including undercutting the door casing do it looks like the floor was put in first, anything less will look like a young child installed the floor.
D.B Cooper What about putting rugs over carpeting? Like the whole thing wall-to-wall?
dejay9995 well at the least the carpet won’t break apart like the LVP will I’m a very short time. Check Craigslist and apps like OfferUp for carpet installers selling remnants, you might be able to save some money. I have no place to store left over carpet so I give it away for free.
