  • 1970 Dodge Charger R/T 426 Hemi Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #108
The Dodge Charger is one of the most menacing looking Muscle Cars, and this 1970 backs up the look with power from a 426 cube Hemi V8. It is one of just 56 made with an automatic transmission behind the Hemi, out of a total of 112 Hemi cars built in 1970. One of the other unique features is the color, known as EB3 Light Blue Metallic, which contrasts nicely with the black vinyl top and code V8W, the white transverse rear stripe option. It's an awesome ride from the Brothers Collection!

The first car that I bought at age 18 upon high school graduation was a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T in Plum Crazy (purple) with white top & interior, and the 440 Magnum engine. So fast. Could spin the tires for blocks (not that I ever did that...). Cost in 1976? $500. Beside awful gas mileage, the only other down side (for me) was that guys were always trying to steal it. One morning my father came out the front door of the house and found a guy sitting in the driver's seat. He was able to break into the car, but he didn't know how to start it!

For all the commentors below who aren't old enough to have actually experienced the muscle car era, let me just say that the 426 HEMI was overhyped on the street but not on the dragstrip. I owned a 1969 Hemi Roadrunner, 4spd car and a 440 six pack super bee and a 71 440-6 cuda. The Hemi's were a pain in the ass to say the least to keep running tight on the street from the factory whereas the 440 six packs were tight and were turn key performers right off the showroom.

My Parents had a 1970 Charger SE, 383 Magnum, bought new, same color combination which is my favorite of course. Unfortunately they sold it due to the fake oil crisis in the 70"s. Love this Hemi version which is the ultimate car in my opinion! Any 1970 Charger is a Gem and no other car created, in existence gets my blood pumping like the Charger does!

0:50 - Note the fuselage design, where the bottom portion of the doors and rocker panels form a smooth, continuous curve under the body body that envelops the car, reducing its perceived mass and giving it an organic appearance, like a jet fighter.
The origin of “fuselage design” was, unsurprisingly, aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, who got his start designing aircraft. At Jaguar in the 1950s, he applied wind tunnel testing and mathematical calculations to designing the LeMans-winning D-Type and the legendary E-Type, considered a nearly ideal combination of aesthetics and functionality. His masterpiece was the 12-cylinder mid-engined Jaguar XJ13, a sports racing car that intended for competition at Le Mans, but disqualified by a rule change, so it never entered production.

Holy crap, I have the slightly older sister to this 70 Charger, my 70 Charger was built October 6th 1969 in St. Louis and lived most of it's life near Lubbock Texas as far as I know. Only difference is my Charger is an A73 special value package, XH code base model Charger, triple Eb5, and was a 318 2 barrel, column shifted, bench seat Charger. It is kind of neat to think that your Hemi Charger was probably just down the assembly line from mine, and they were on opposite ends of the performance spectrum.

This guy has a really nice and relaxed speaking style and I love how they get into the details of the cars and give appropriate comments of small details rather than glossing over them It's the small details that really make these cars more desirable. That car by the way had the Tic-Tac-Tock which was shown but the special significance over the standard one not mentioned here - I think they were optional? Or maybe standard on the R/T. I just find it annoying how they keep that undercurrent of porno music going in the background while the guy is speaking. At the start and end of the video is acceptable but not sure why they continue the music in competition with the narrative. It's just so unnecessary. It's like a couple of blowflies continually flying around you while you are trying to have a picnic. It's not cool like they are trying to make it seem.

Actually wether you got a Dana 60 standard or optional depended on which transmission you got behind your 440+6 or HEMI.
The “Super Performance axle package” was optional on automatic 440+6 and HEMI cars and swapped out the Mopar 8¾ rear for a Dana 60. On HEMI cars with a 4-speed the “Track Pack” was a mandatory option and actually optional on 440 cars with a 4-speed.
The “Super Track Pack” got you 4:10 gearing instead of the standard Dana 60 3:54 gearing.

I kind of hate to say it, but this charger with its 426 hemi wouldn’t have a chance against the 392 hemi in the charger now, let alone the hellcat charger. Top speed or acceleration is nowhere close, but the 69 chargers were beautiful .

The hemispherical combustion cambers are a prerequisite for true cross-flow heads, AKA Alfa Romeo. But they're dirty so the modern "Hemi" is that in name only; they aren't cross-flows, so no hemispherical combustion cambers

    Minor details?
That chrome bumper surround absolutely ruined the second generation Charger.
To me '68 was great and '69 was almost perfect, then they had to mess around with the front clip.
