    Hi, I would like to highlight few things if you do not mind , the battery has to be disconected in the first step and connected in the last step. also the hhd should not be bent then disconnected , it is better if you peel off the first blue silicon protection then you disconnect the hhd then you lift up the second blue silicon protection and you should disconnect the HDD connector without bending the HDD flex , but over all it is a great video and I have learned few thing about the flash drive today , thanks

    Hi Mike, Yes i did that. I think that the iPod may be broken. I am letting the battery fully drain again as i did get a response from iTunes but then it went wrong. It has been stuck in disk mode for years, now it is just showing the apple logo and going no further. Cheers.

    I did this and install fine but when i plug it in to my MAC it wants to restore via Firewire only. did you use USB? to restore software?

      +David Colton Yes I used USB since I do not have FW400 port on my Mac. But remember you should power it via FW (use supplied power adapter) when connecting to you computer via USB.

    Hi! First of all, thank u for this awesome guide. I've an issue: as soon as I connect my iPod to my Mac with USB cable nothing happens. I've tried to connect it via firewire cable to my MacBook mid 2007, but the iPod seems to freeze while restoring (iTunes opens up, but it seems freezes too). Any idea oh what would be the problem?

      Try reconnecting the CF, i think there is a wrong connection somewhere, also check the jumper settings

      @MikeStarkov  Před 4 lety

      If you connect via USB, that should be a twin cable USB+FW and you should power it via FW Power Adapter. Or connect it straight via FW. I'm not sure how to solve the iTunes freezing issue.

    Hello! Does anyone know if you put a CF card adapter with an SD card? I’ve used this on a canon 5D original.

    how's the battery life on the new battery from ifixit? 8 hours?

      Mike Starkov thanks. Ifixit batteries seem to be a hit or miss. Another youtuber said it lasted only few hours. And he tried two of them.

    • @MikeStarkov

      shinviroz that could be a faulty one. You never know for sure.

    Hello. I am trying to do the same mod with my iPod. When I try and do the restore I cannot get the CF card to communicate over fire wire. It only works through USB. I can’t get iTunes to let me restore over usb even if I try with FireWire/usb y cable. I have tried on a modern Mac and with a Mac the same age but refuses to restore. Any idea’s ?

    • @MikeStarkov
      @MikeStarkov  Před 6 lety

      Andrew Cripps I'm not sure what the issue can be. Try powering via FW with power adapter while connected to computer via USB.

      Mike Starkov thanks for your reply. Really appreciate it. I tried using a Y connector with usb and fire wire into the iPod at the same time. But that didn’t work :( do you think I need to try this with a pc? Maybe there is a problem with my cf adaptor or the cf card? 🤷‍♂️

    • @MikeStarkov
      @MikeStarkov  Před 6 lety

      Andrew Cripps check your CF card via card reader first. Then try to format it. Then put it back into iPod and try to restore again. Hopefully this will help.

      If it's the same as my 4th generation the CF card needs to be able to mount as a fixed disk. A lot of cards will do this automatically but many can't and iTunes won't be able to restore it.

    Hi, is 32GB the max that I can use? Or can I go higher?

  • @Rickandmorty_com

    Dont u need ubuntu to do this?

    • @MikeStarkov
      @MikeStarkov  Před 7 lety +2

      shinviroz you just need iTunes (Mac/Win) to restore iPod after you replace the hard drive.

      Mike Starkov is battery life same with cf card?

    • @MikeStarkov

      It's definitely longer

      ***** I heard from a mod forum that the ipod is designed to conserve battery by putting the hard drive in power saving mode, but when you replace it with CF card, the ipod runs in full-power mode for the duration the ipod is on, resulting in quick drainage of the battery.

    if you cut off the plastic pin that you mentioned at 2:59, can you install a flash card without an adapter?

    • @MikeStarkov
      @MikeStarkov  Před 7 lety

      Noah Barrager Nope. At least pins are arranged differently.

      @@MikeStarkov Something interesting to note is that on the iPod Mini 2G you don't need an adapter as you can just connect the compact flash card directly to the same port as the existing hard drive.

      I removed a very small amount of plastic from the new board with a file so that it would fit onto the existing ribbon cable.

    • @MikeStarkov
      @MikeStarkov  Před 8 lety

      +Christophe Sevin Hello. I did not try any bigger cards since I do not have them ) I'm not sure if the adapter and iPod controller support bigger cards. If you have or can borrow one and try, tell me your story )

      +Christophe Sevin With the IDE bus, you should be good to at least 128GB

    • @jevroii3637
      @jevroii3637 Před 5 lety

      @@drewsof but with UDMA7 being standard on CF cards above 32gb it'll probably lock up the iPod.
