- You've likely never heard of La Fière Bridge, but it was one of World War II's hardest fought and bloodiest battles. You can find the bridge and monuments there, just up the road from Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy.
The battle began on D-Day, june 6, 1944, and lasted until June 10th. The ferocity of the four-day battle for control of this small, unassuming stone bridge over the Merderet River at La Fière in Normandy, is testament to the bridge’s strategic importance. Without control of the bridge and its vital causeway, American forces coming from Utah Beach would not have been able to force their way inland.
Col. S.L.A. Marshal said, "La Fière is probably the bloodiest small unit struggle in the experience of American arms.”
Victory at La Fière cost more than 250 American lives, and yet, with few excpetions, the story of that battle remains largely untold.
The more you study this battle, the more you realize how complex it was. This, short 14 minute program is our attempt to tell the story of the Battle of La Fière Bridge , and the men who fought it, in simple terms.
P.S. Please pardon my mispronunciation of any French names and terms! :-)
Thank you brother for informing me about this heavy duty battle.
I visited and this place is as innocuous looking as shown. But, this was an incredible battle

Fantastic!! These very detailed videos down to the names are so incredible. Please keep up the spirit of making these. You're making irreplaceable memories. Names and locations especially!! You're bending history to fit. So amazing!! Thank you!!
Dwayne, thanks so much! Feedback like yours is what keeps me going! 🙂
Very comprehensive narrative of an important, yet little discussed action of the Normandy campaign. Please continue to produce more of this important history that is ever fading away.
Chaz, comments like yours are all that I need to keep these programs going. Many thanks!
@@johnfenzel All the way!
Sorry not to take anything away from anyone. But the battle of the Somme is the bloodiest battle I have heard of. Lest we forget.
@ 11:25 one of those Silver Stars and Purple Hearts belong to my dad (507th). He was with LtC Timmes. Lt Law (13:14) rescued him when he got wounded.
I shared this video with Lt Law's son. He was very moved that you included him.
Bonito paisaje recuerda a muchas peliculas originales, parece no haber pasado el tiempo por esas tierras....

Superb account!

I would like to get a copy of that DeGlopper map. My uncle died at a location that would be on that map & within 1000' of the La Fiere Bridge.
I’ll look for it!!
FURY FROM THE SKY 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!!!!
❤❤
🙌🙌🙌🙌
The stuck Sherman tank hit a US mine laid out over the bridge and farther to the south for when 3 former French small tanks and one Panzer 3 were attacking from the south. In all the photos I have seen the Panzer 3 is hard to see because all four tanks had been bulldozed off the road and the only known to me photo of the Panzer 3 is shown from behind.
If I were woke, I would say, not ask, "How do we know any of this really happened!!!!"

I'm sorry the narrator didn't take French from a Parisienne.
Totally agree, Stephen. My pronunciation is awful...
