  • When it comes to the 82nd Airborne in Normandy, much is made of the fight at La Fiere Bridge, but there's another bridge to the south that doesn't get as much attention. In this episode, we're going to Chef du Pont to talk a bit about the fighting that took place there and we've brought an artifact from The Gettysburg Museum of History that is connected to one of the men who served in the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Great to see Chef Du Pont getting coverage - I often find it's seldom mentioned in the current historical narratives of today's generation. My parents live in nearby Appeville so I pass over this very bridge on the way to their house when I visit them. The action from Chef Du Pont towards the village of Baupte is an area of the liberation of Normandy story that is almost never mentioned. An integral part of the 82nd Airborne and 90th Infantry Divisions history.

Great to see another video from Normandy. I'm leaving for Normandy for the third time tomorrow. Every time I go I see new things and hear new stories. Your videos are always a great guide to visiting places. Also your videos about the Battle of the Bulge locations and Berchtesgarden helped me to visit all the interesting places.
Thank you for all your history lessons and letting the memories live on.
    Keep it up...

My Grandfather is Roy Creek. I was there with most of my extended family (~20 in all) the day that picture was taken. I got the privilege of hearing first hand the story of the bridge at Chef du Pont. Later, was privileged to hear my grandfather recount the story of Bob Ray, and the heroic actions of the men of the 508th infantry at LaFiere. My grandfather was in reserve at LaFiere and gave an eyewitness account of the battle with Bob Ray and his wife and family present. God Bless these men!

The countryside is so peaceful and beautiful there. It's hard to picture it all war torn and mangled from combat. And to know it holds such a history of suffering, and death. Very sad, and inspirational at the same time.

My father, Cpl. Robert Roussey of Co. B 507 PIR, saw his first action on DDay at Chef du Pont. He fought at the village church against snipers in the church bell tower, then later was ordered to the La Fiere bridge while Capt. Creek and his small group stayed to defend the bridge at Chef du Pont. I and my father visited Chef du Pont in 2002 where he reminisced at the church courtyard. It was an emotional experience for me and him. He was wounded on June 15 at Labonneville where he lost his right eye. I met Roy Creek numerous times. He was a fascinating gentleman and a true hero, like all of the paratroopers in the 82nd and it’s 507th regiment. Thanks so much for this great and informative video.

Im also a Maryland Resident, live about 50 minutes from Gettysburg and visit the Gettysburg Museum of History as often as possible. What a fascinating place. Each time i go i bring a friend and trust me, it DOES NOT Disappoint! Thank You For what You have provided. Ive long wanted to visit Normandy and trace the steps of those who landed at Normandy, but its nice to be able to do so through both of You!

Thanks again JD for the light on a little known site. While you were pointing out the German defenses I had to imagine why there were there. They had to be prepared as they were undoubtedly synchronized in their positions and through their command to defend key terrain. Neat bring back, and was the fisherman getting any bites off that bridge?

J.D. , another fine video and as fascinating as always. But I do have a small issue with your inconsistencies with your map graphics. As a Canadian I am pleased that you are using our flag of the era and not the more recognizable current Maple Leaf flag. With that in mind, shouldn't you be using the 48 star US flag circa 1944 and not the current 50 star flag. As they say today, "I'm just stay"
