His stats didn't change much clearly showing coaching did nothing for him. The guy didn't have footwork or a good midrange. What can a coach teach him about dunking? Nothing, that's what. Phil Jackson was there for Kobe and crew. Kobe developed under Phil Jackson and he improved. Shaq did not, he just learned how to run the triangle offense but he was still a poor free throw shooter and he didn't acquire footwork or mid range game.

It's because a good coach that can implement it to his team is rare and shaq actually does play perfectly with the system despite being a freak nature by himself. You should watch the clip where rodman shows on the court how phil applied the triangle to them and I really doubt And back then it is not the head coach's main responsibility to make a player a better free throw shooter and acquire footwork or whatever betetr stats you had in mind, It's all about the system and defense. Brad Stevens who basically did most of the development and laid the foundations, Ime Udoka who took them the next level and finally got them to the Finals and now Joe Mazzula. The fact is the Celtics generally speaking always seem to do poorly after having great seasons as soon the expectations and pressure come the following season. People are saying it's not the coaches fault.
Let me clear something up. I am definitely not a believer in Tatum anymore but the Celtics have been playing the exact same system they were playing under Brad Stevens. It is a 5 player 1 on 1, this team does not slice and cut. They don't scramble and they don't play as a cohesive unit. They literally play iso ball and take turns doing it. That is not a winning formula for a championship. The truth is Brad Stevens is the GM which means he has input on how the team plays. They are playing exactly how they played when he was coaching. You have regular season coaches (Mike D'Antoni, Mike Budenholzer, Brad Stevens, etc. and then you have championship coaches (Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr, etc.)
Joe Mazulla ignorantly responded that the amount of threes the Boston Celtics chucked up was not a problem. I can tell you it's a problem and it's why they lost. Live and die by the three. You should be looking to get high percentage shots and if a man opens up then pass out for a three. But don't walk up to the line and shoot a contested three after you've missed your first 12 attempts. That is the sign of a coach who will make very little use of the talent he was handed. Just like Doc Rivers under delivered with the Boston Celtics Big 4 because Rondo was a huge part of that offense (disrespectful to him to only say Big 3). Mike Budenholzer also under delivered with the Bucks and Brad Stevens under delivered along with subsequent coaches Ime Ukoda was the best coach Boston had but........I agree Tatum and company failed but the coach is the navigator. He failed to make a correct plan and Brad Stevens failed to get someone who could navigate them the right way. Not his way because his way has been a consistent failure.

Why is this even a conversation. Its silly. It was his first year as a head coach and he got them to the Eastern Conference Finals. They lost 4-3 so it went seven games to a Heat team that is really good and made the Eastern Conference Finals last season I believe. People are so quick to fire a coach and get a new one. Give him a few years. Its not all his fault for them losing. Tatum is not consistent and Brown is the same way. The players didn't play well enough. The coach can draw up the best scheme in the NBA but if the players don't go out there and execute or make shots or defend then that is not the coach fault. Defense is effort. Effort from the players. The coach can't make players play defense. He can come up with strategies to help but its up to the players to buy in and give effort and execute. The coach cant make players make shots. He can only put them in the best positions to score. Its up to the players to put the ball in the basket. The coach can not keep players from turning the ball over. The players have to be better at handling the ball and having better ball security. Too many coaches in the NBA get blamed for a team losing or not making the finals. Its not always the coaches. They fire one coach, get another and then fire that coach in 2 years, and then get another. The cycle repeats itself for some or most of these teams in the NBA.

I will say, klay is trying to be a more all around scorer but he’s just not that guy. And when you didn’t play 3 yrs in a row he’ll probably never be the same. Jaylen Brown gotta be one of most supremely talent players in basketball with the lowest IQ. Im telling i counted more than 10 times where he literally drove the ball into a double team, got stuck and either turned the ball over or led to a bad shot. He really handicapped this teams potential this year with the way he played.
