I’m glad he acknowledged the mistake. Not calling a timeout works out when you have prepped your team with options to score in 6 seconds, 9, seconds, 14 seconds. The issue he had was keeping the philosophy of going ahead without having the team prepared.
With proper prep, not calling a timeout but having a pre-set plan does put the defense on the backfoot as they are used to a chance to stop and talk with their coach

As a Celtics fan this dude did an awesome job especially considering the circumstances he was put under. Hearing him talk about how he still has things to learn and get better at as a coach and that he wants to be better is great.
If I was a Celtics fan I would be very excited about the future. We don't often think of coaches as learning and developing as they go - we tend to view them as "finished products" but of course that has never been the case - they learn and improve in exactly the same way as players, GMs, fans.
The fact that he is so young as a head coach suggests that he is going to make BIG strides. I feel like Tatum will take another step forward this season as well. I like Boston to win the title this year.

His offensive strategy was terrible. It was like AAU basketball. ISO iso iso.

He absolutely didn't do an awesome job. I don't know what you were watching as a Celtics fan. The team regressed and this rookie coach looked flat out lost in the playoffs. He never should have got a head coaching job this soon.
I see Mazzulla’s no timeout method as him pushing the boundaries of how basketball is played. It’s something that can realistically be implemented and successful.
I agree time-outs should be used in extreme moments when a team is unable to stop an attack countless times.
But momentum can be switched and players can stop momentum by seeking fouls or slowing down the tempo. Timeouts can’t be the answer to every negative in a game
This is exactly what you want to see in a leader. Conviction in his philosophy, admitting specific faults, and committing to doing better. That mindset will have a trickle down effect.

Loved that Coach Mazzulla can recognize his mistakes and learn from them at a very young age for a NBA Head Coach, that's a great trait to have as a young professional that wants to go further in their career

I am a Bucks fan, but I think he is the scariest piece of the team. I think Griffin is a good coach, but the Celtics team being a second year under such a great coaching philosophy will be scary good.

I just love this guy, so real, honest. This is important to be a leader. And he learned this no timeout thing prob from Stevens. Stevens explained before, if the team is doing the right things but the other team is just hitting wild shots, he may not call a timeout to disrupt the good things they're doing.

What’s funny is that when Ime was here- everyone was excited about his defensive philosophy & offensive strategy. Any guesses who was the architect for his offensive strategy? Joe will be fine- adding Sam & Lee ( by his choice) will help him a ton.
You’ll be very with Amile Jefferson too. Great young man who won in college and made it to nba with nothing but grit and dedication. He’s been a huge help at Duke too as a coach in player development. Good luck to you guys!

People keep saying this but there’s nothing concrete to prove this. They said the same thing with the defense.
Regardless, Boston was better offensively under Joe than under Ime. Even after the flukey automatic shooting from the first half of the season, Post-ASB they had a 118 Offensive rating.
I hope he stop 3pt attempt if your players struggle a game, I'm glad he acknowledged the mistake.
The no timeouts were odd but the main problem fans had was he looked like his players didnt listen to him. Youd constantly see Joe standing aside at time outs while Smart or Hordord were calling plays and essentially coaching the team
He trusted his team. Smart at that point had been on the team way longer and was captain. He knows not to fully trust them now lol
Phil Jackson was know as a coach that didn't call a lot of timeouts and it worked pretty good for him. This ain't college where a team scores 3 or 4 buckets in a row and the coach jumps up, calls timeout grabs the clip board.
That literally happens a ton in the NBA. Teams give up runs all the time to which a coach has to call a timeout (usually when they go down double digits or their lead gets cut to single digits)
Brad Stevens also did this and Celtics fans hated it. There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s just easier to see the bad end of not calling a timeout because it’s right in front of you.

The only problem with Mazulla is that the celtics are in win now mode and theres no room for coaching beginner failures. Im not a fan of bringing up young guys like him in situations where there just winning it all or loosing it all. Smaller Market would have made much more sense for him to learn all the little things.
Ime Udoka was also a first time head coach. The Celtics aren't choosing Udoka and Mazzulla to cultivate a head coach. They believe this is the head coach to lead them and are willing to deal with the growing pains.
@seansu1248 exactly. several variables to it too, Brad needs someone he can trust and work with, and that buys into the organizations beliefs and values systems. Celtics are a world class organization because they make decisions on their terms and do things their way. Wyc, Brad, and Joe = Great Leadership

He basically said, I can't draw up a play because we don't practice that. So I just don't call the timeout... It's just sports at the end of the day but got damn

I think it’s gonna pay off down the line. He’s teaching his players to toughen up mentally, to bail themselves out. To get stops while the other team is on fire and to score when the other team is locking them down. I think it’ll pay off down the line with his players becoming just better against harder opponents
If you’re a good enough coach you can draw a play to get an easy bucket when your team is bleeding.
Joe didn’t do that once all year.

Man I would have loved to see the Celtics run it back this season, with Joe mazzulla as a second year coach. I don't like the Marcus Smart trade, but also that offer was too good to refuse, so it was just difficult. I really feel like the they panicked when they acquired Jrue holiday. They should not have traded Rob Williams , his value is immense but difficult to reflect in a trade.

It’s quite literally a tool to use for coaches. You can give guys breaks. You can set up plays. You can disrupt runs of the opponents. I will never understand a philosophy of electing to neglect all tools at his disposal. It’s wrong and he’s wrong, but time will show
The problem with timeout criticism is it’s such an easy thing for the untrained eye to point to. It’s also solely a result based criticism. Coach doesn’t call a timeout and the other team stays hot? What an idiot! Coach doesn’t call a timeout and the other team cools down? Great job adjusting! Fans just latch onto anything they can to sound like they know what they’re talking about.
I actually think this interview proved everything we believed about him. Stubborn and makes a ton of mistakes because of it. Let's see if he actually improves or if he's able to swallow his pride

Ime couldn’t keep his job because he didn’t know how to act in a professional setting 😂 talking about being inexperienced. Udoka also inherited a team that went to 4 ecf in previous years acting like he built the team. Udoka had a full training camp and summer to prepare compared to Joe who was thrown in the day before preseason games began.

Hes getting the best experience possible at a young age. As a celtics fan it sucked seeing Ime go because he's legit as it comes but Joe is a great young mind that gets along well with the players too. Added Sam Cassell to the staff. Only time will tell

Ngl he seems 'stuck' in his ways. The way he's talking here aligns very much with what Grant Williams said. He has a point of view on the game and finds it very hard to step out of himself to see a different pov. He said in the last clip, he will internationally sit in his 'mistake'. Kinda sounds hard-headed to me.

Man, this guy philosophy is terrible. Celtics lose years with this good team and won't win nothing. This guy is good coach for G league, trying something new. Feel uncomfortable to listen to him.

I actuall think this is why they got rid of Marcus Smart. He probabaly thought he knew more than the coach. Coaching as so many components that a fan like myself can't even fathom. Coaches are now getting fired because everybody knows the game more than them. Even Mike Budenholzer got fired for so called game mismanagement when he coached the same way when they won the title. Brad Stevens was great out of timeout but that was about it. Dude, this game is about chance. That's it. Mike Malone was probabaly on his way out until Jokic entered his prime. My point here is enough with the second guessing. Coaches know what they are doing and the better the players, the better the coaching. What Boston didn't have last year was depth. They've addressed it this year, so let's judge Coach Mazzulla on this year.

Hes not a good coach. I actually think hes a terrible coach. Might be good for regular season but come playoffs he's a bust. He reminds me of D'Antoni and thats nit a good thing. No need to @ me. Just watch 10 years later he will be labeled as the worst coach the Celtics had.
I think you really underestimate how difficult last season's situation was -- imagine being suddenly thrown into HC role right before the season starts, don't even have a full bench of assistants, and are forced to adopt the departing HC's system / framework. And they were still a game away from the finals. You should see how Dwyane Wade speaks about Erik Spoelstra in his first years of coaching (Spo also got badly outcoached, admittedly, during the 2011 finals). Like, this dude is 35; as long he stays humble and works hard and stays positive, he could be great. Time will tell. Also, having Sam Cassell and Charles Lee on the coaching staff is going to be huge for him.

@@malcolmhodnett8874no the vibe I'm getting from what he's saying is that there's nothing wrong with my philosophy I just didn't teach them enough about my philosophy, like a person who is full of himself he even said he doesn't care about what anyone said except for his players witch ofcourse he's the coach and reading the players that he has, no one will really correct him if he's wrong except maybe Smart who is no longer in his team. it wouldn't be so obvious if he didn't keep repeating it so many times like his philosophy is the only thing that matters and not willing to adjust if needed.
