    She’s still learning and honestly did a really good fall! Finn is still adjusting to a bit and Sophie is still learning how to ride with contact. She let go of the reins and tucked her body to roll which was great. Hope her back side isn’t too sore and confidence is okay. You guys should lunge him (and sensitizing/desensitizing) before every ride. It works wonders, builds relationship, respect and trust. Hope Sophie’s okay, not the worst fall but still hurts!

    I think the main reason she ended up coming off was because she perches forward when she asks for the canter rather then sitting back and he just thought aha mum meet the floor, next time try getting her to sit back give her hands forward and squeeze

    • @DragonHeart956
      @DragonHeart956 Před 5 lety +12

      Exactly. You are always more secure and have better balance sitting back than sitting forward, and sitting forward can also make situations worse because it can make it more difficult for the horse (and yourself) to balance. All she had to do to stay on (even with a lost stirrup) is sit back a bit and put her leg on. Unfortunately, its human nature to want to lean forward when nervous, and once you've been allowed to form that habit when riding horses, it can be incredibly difficult to break.

    Gabby, when you got on Finn and wanted him to go, I saw you were pulling on the rains and kicking with the legs, which was causing him to rear(15:20). I feel like you were doing to much because he bucked on Sophie and I understand that you want to teach him that that’s not okay and that’s fine. Just next time when you’re asking him to walk or anything like that, just soften your hands and squeeze with your legs.

      I was thinking the same thing when I was watching . When a horse wants to rear, immediately ask them to move forward but you need to make sure you aren’t pulling on the mouth. Pulling would give a mixed signal of ‘go forward and stop’. That frustrates the horse and often causes rearing. (I have a lot of experience training horses and working with rearers). Gabby did do a good job of eventually getting him forward. I do however question that pony’s suitability for Sophie. Of course, I barely ‘know’ Sophie or the pony so I could be wrong but that is what my instinct tells me. Either way, was nice seeing the family out together with the horses. You don’t see that too often these days

    Oh Laura, you know how much I love you, please don’t say Finn is crazy though, he’s not “crazy” lol. He’s an active pony who wants to get on with it and is a little impatient ie not standing at the mounting block ( something which Sophia should work on, although not so easy with the steps she is using as there’s not much of a platform). Once he got going he seemed to be ok, he does shake his head a bit ( still not sure whether it’s habit or flies etc that bother him), perhaps Sophie could put an ear bonnet on him and see if that makes a difference. Just my opinion but I think he just took his opportunity after running into canter and Sophia being tipped forward to hump his back a bit ( was naughty of him). Had she the strength of Gabby she’d have been able to keep his head up and push him forward. Well done Sophia though, you handled your fall like a trooper 😊I really hope you did get back on Finn, even if it was just walking back to the barn, always best to get on rather than leave it 👍 I’m so glad Sam was there too, talks a lot of sense and definitely right, if Finn hadn’t been ridden for a week, not saying he should be naughty, but some horses do act more fresh if they’re not ridden consistently and perhaps Finn is one of them. I’d discuss with your trainers and show them the video as I’m sure they’ll offer some advice ( even Sophia having a neckstrap for a while might be an idea, will also help to keep her hands still), just a thought, I really do think he should be ridden consistently though. I’m terms of his rearing, Gabby needs to be careful with her hands, I know they were only small, but that’s the last habit you want him to develop, not nice at all; hands forward and down, no pulling and drive forward with lots of leg, growling can sometimes help and even turning him as he can’t rear then ( although again it’s being careful ), your trainers will help I’m sure and advise you based on the footage 😊
    Sorry for my war and peace lol, finally Gabby, good riding on Storm and no stirrup work, helps you sit deep in the saddle and the canters coming along nicely ( think Storm bucks when you ask for changes and if your leg aids go too far back) lol 👍 Hope Sophia is ok though and hasn’t been put off riding Finn, I’m sure with some perseverance, help and consistency they’re going to make a great team 😊

      I honestly dont even remember saying he was crazy. I totally don't believe he is crazy! Lol. He is impulsive and dramatic. He is also young. I think the head tossing goes along with the foot stomping and all the other tantrum behaviours he has . He is just a pony with an attitude. He likes what he likes and that's it! He has got some attitude and although he's 8 he may not have been trained under saddle until he was older than normal and not ridden much. I know I only see what's on the vlogs, but I'm still not convinced that his behaviour is all down to age ( 8 isn't that young), tantrums etc as he tosses his head sometimes when just standing with a loose rein. I do wonder if he might be more comfortable in an anatomical bridle, one which avoids some of the sensitive parts of the face. It may also be of course that he just wasn't ridden very sympathetically when he was younger, wrong bit etc and so alot of it is learnt behaviour and habit ( not the people you bought him from, but before that). I'm sure he'll come right though and you can't but love him, he's gorgeous 😊

      @caryulmer5578 Před 5 lety +12

      DayByDay Vlogs Laura, I think Sophie is trying her best to ride well, so please take this as just helpful observations to consider. Sophie needs help from Brandon & Fiona to work on her seating & hands. The reason she couldn't control him is because her seating wasn't aligned & she only holds the reins in a tight death grip, pulling back on his mouth all the time. That will frustrate him since she also wants him to canter, so she's giving him direction to canter & to slow down at the same time. Re: her seating: because she's so concerned about keeping her reins pulled too tight (she's worried about keeping him from going too fast) it pulls her shoulders over his withers so when he put his head down it pulled her even further forward & she couldn't keep her seat. The rule for seating is the line from your ear should go straight down through your shoulder, hips & heels. Watch her seating in this vid, she's leaning too far forward constantly, because she's pulling on the reins so tight. She's doing it out of fear, but pulling on the reins constantly won't teach him to slow down or not bolt. She needs help from Brandon & Fiona with this too. Love Fiona, but I think Brandon can teach her more quickly, I've noticed you talk alot to Fiona when she's trying to teach which can cause her to miss some things with the girls. (Honestly I'd be the worst distraction for a trainer, I'm way too chatty, so I'm not critisizing you, just an observation I've had.😄) Remember Finn was the horse with the good brakes, he'd stop instantly & was much quieter when you first got him. You need to ask why this has all changed. The behaviors you're seeing now are from how Sophie rides, (because she's afraid) please talk to Brandon about helping her with seating, hands & getting past her constant fear, Finn will only get worse otherwise. Both you & Sam did well telling her to get back on (& no screaming from you👍), but it is Finn she needs to get back on not Storm, even if she gets lead by Gabby off of Storm. Otherwise you're teaching Finn the way to get Sophie not to ride him is dump her, & he'll eventually be too much horse for her to handle. Learn from what happened with Stella, Sophie fell off, screamed while on Stella when she couldn't handle her & then no longer rode her. Stella progressively spooked more & more. Fortunately Gabby started riding Stella & did so calmly & consistently. Stella is no longer the spooky horse, in fact Sophie is now more afraid of Finn than she is Stella. Hope all this didn't sound too critical, I just think you need to get it turned around sooner rather than later before Sophie becomes too afraid to ride lovely sweet Finn. Maybe also get Brandon to ride Finn to show you how to handle these problems.

My instructor tells me to sit up tall and this has really helped as it slows my boy right down and has really helped my confidence. • @charlottebertan
    @charlottebertan Před 4 lety +1

    Finn was rearing because he was frustrated with gabby. She was pulling back on the reins (also why he was flipping his head) and kicking him, which was giving him mixed signals, and he didn’t know what to do. If she would have loosened her reins, sat back, and squeezed with her legs he would have gone forward and been a good horse with no problems. Also using voice commands like “hey” or “woah” in a calm voice instead of yelling “Get up!”. Horses have 60x better hearing than us it scares them when we make loud noises. (They can also hear your heartbeat, so when your nervous they hear your heart racing and get nervous too). So all I’m saying is try to be more calm when correcting your horses, and being all tough might seem like it “looks cool” or something but trust me being calm is a lot better and the horse will be happier.

    Great job getting back on Sophie! Just a little tip that may help Sophie: when Finn starts bucking or “playing” look up and try to lean back a little. It helps keep balance. (This is just a suggestion, not hate 🤗) Also Gabby did great on Finn! Both have improved so much! ❤️

    Sophie is still learning. Finn is a good pony for her; she developed so much confidence ever since getting him. She dealt with falling off of him well! Sometimes, a cheeky pony can provide just the right amount of challenge, if the rider is ready for that challenge. Also, at least a pony is closer to the ground if you happen to fall off lol. I do like your ring set up; it’s so pretty in the summer! Just be sure to every once in a while, go through the ring to look for any stones or rocks you can pick out! Are you planning on eventually changing the footing in there, or keeping it as a grass arena? At least Sophie got back on a horse, and that she is ok! I remember after falling, she would not want to get back on!

    Sophie, be careful about yelling when that happens. He was just crow hopping, and yelling never makes it better. ❤️ also be careful Gabby, because he’s little rears seem to be caused by you yanking on the reins but also kicking forward. Always release pressure and don’t kick and block movement at the same time. ❤️

    The reason that Finn acted out was because he was sensing her fear of him. And he was getting mixed emotions. And when she asked him to canter to started to bounce a little, but he never bucked. And after that first of canter that she did, she gave him a HUGE KICK, which told him to go. So of course he did, and she easily got unbalanced and fell off. It wasn't Finn's fault at all. Just hope that you don't take this the wrong way, Sophie should be glad that she has a sister that isn't afraid of Finn, her horse. I just saying that if "finn" keeps doing this, Sophie could get badly injured.

    I couldn’t say for sure without riding him for about a month, but Finn might be the kind of horse that can not have a day off. I have a horse and for the first 3 months I had him he didn’t get a day without some sort of riding. Now some days we just walked or went for a jog, but he got at least an hour under saddle everyday. The difference in him was amazing. This horse had only been under saddle a few months, and was getting nowhere. In a consistent program he went from jumping 2’ to 3’9” and 3’ courses. He went from a kimberwick to a loose ring French link snaffle, and from fussiness and choppy gaits to carrying himself as properly as he could with the muscle he’s got. I know people fuss and say your horse needs at least one day off but if they have 2/3 days of small work it’s fine :) anyway like I said I couldn’t say for sure without riding him! She handled the fall well and I hope she’s not too sore!
    As for his behavior with Gabby, I honestly would’ve taken a crop and popped his butt for that nonsense, with a firm “quit it!” And made him move forward. That was ridiculous, and him thinking he was allowed to do what he pleased. He’s definitely becoming a bit sassy 🙈

    Yesterday my horse got really happy and excited after a jump at out Pony Club lesson which resulted in a little bucking. I fell off an blacked out but got right back on after from the ground to finish my course. My whole back was in terrible pain and my vison was blurry. Hours and hours went by and ibuprofen wasn't helping. That night I was brought into the ER where we did a cat scan on my brain and Xrays of my chest and spine. I also got blood work done which I think was the worst part lol. I have eventing camp in a few weeks and am hoping my Dr's clear me for riding soon!!

    I suggest check the saddle because bucking isn’t normal horse behaviour, the same happened with my horse every time I wanted to canter, if you slide your hand down the front of the saddle it should slide down perfectly if not it’s to tight in the shoulders so when Sophie asks for canter it’s pushing on them and then Sophie is leaning forward and pushing too, and I loved the way Sophie acted after her fall lol. Love you guys

      Horses buck for fun too, you can tell from their body language if they're bucking to get you off or just from excess energy. Horses buck running round fields all the time with no rider and as a defence mechanism so really don't know how you think it's not normal horse behaviour?

      Ellie Hensey it’s not normal when a rider is on the back, Finn looked like he weren’t moving very swiftly and because it was leading into canter he did it it makes me think it’s the saddle as Sophie was leaning forward aswell

    Sophie, you never, ever let their head drop. Because this is what happens. I'm so proud of you for getting back on Storm. Remember this, YOU ARE STILL LEARNING THE BODY CLUES!!! And you are a young rider. We all are learning about different horses, along with our own, from the time we start riding we are always learning!! Laura in that situation, it was best for her to go off on her terms. That was the first thing I was taught at the standstill, walk, trot then canter. You have to know how to fall to fall safely. And be very proud of her attitude. She got on Storm with minimal crying. That was fantastic to see!! I'm so proud of her!! And having Gabby get up on Fynn was also good. Because she rode him through, told him to knock it off, and he went well for her. 1. Because she is a more advanced rider than Sophie is and 2. She won't put up with his shenanigans. Best Regards from Ottawa, Jenn.

    My horse pig roots which is what finnny was doing I taught my horse to stop doing it by sitting really far back like leaning back and then if they buck or anything you have to kick them on and just make them go all out fast in the canter, I also had my horses back checked and saddle checked if it fit him ahah. Oh I also got a half pad which released with pressure or pinching if that could also be the case.

    honestly, I think its good to have sophie ride these horses that do "kind of bucks" because those episodes will teach her to stay on, learn to stay on bigger bucks, and make her a better, more confident rider. constructive criticism: make sure you have a light hand and your heels stay down so your calf doesn't slide back, pushing your top half on his neck. I personally have some trust issues with my new horse cause she would throw massive bucks, but you just have to learn that that's a big chunk of this sport. hope this is helpful!!
