- In this video I start on part one of the 5 speed manual transmission swap. That would be changing out the automatic brake pedal to the manual brake pedal and adding the clutch pedal. Overall a pretty easy modification to the Berty30 new up Engine and Trans swap!

Thanks for showing this. I'm eventually going to do a brake booster delete / complete pedal swap, and there seem to be very few videos detailing this. Just seeing that stuff getting yanked out helps. Look forward to next vid.
Colin Stuart why would you do a brake booster delete ??
Yeee Yeeyeee planning on doing an M62 swap. No room for a brake booster (not without a LOT of custom fabrication). Manual brakes sound like they’ll be fine as long as you balance the front and back right, is proper diameter master cylinder bore etc.
I'm just throwing this out there, I don't think the clutch switch is for the starter (at least on my 85 it's not), mine is for the cruise control. It turns it off if you push the clutch so the engine doesn't rev up and it won't engage if the clutch is pushed in. Later models may be different, I don't know. I don't think you need that switch for a race car because, of course, you won't be using cruise control anyway. Good detailed video, thanks. My bracket cracked in half right above the clutch master so I had to pull it out to weld it up. If you notice the clutch pedal doesn't come back all the way and the clutch is engaging way down at the floor you should check it to see if it broke. The clutch master moves to the side when it breaks so you don't get full travel out of it. Also, the big spring on the clutch pedal isn't a return spring it's an OVER-CENTER assist spring, it's purpose is to help you hold the clutch down when you are at a red light and holding it in and you have the clutch pressure plate spring pushing the pedal back up, that's why it holds the clutch pedal down when there's no hydraulics pushing it back, yours was working properly. There is an adjustment you are supposed to do for the clutch pedal height off of the floor with the eccentric bolt that attaches the master push rod to the pedal and it's a lot easier to put the big spring in place before you put the clutch master pushrod attaching bolt in. Another thing, it looked like you were struggling to get the whole assembly back in and you cut the video (probably for all the swearing) and I think it would be a lot easier to take the master clutch cyl. off and put it on after you get the pedal assembly bolted in. Thanks for the video and the into/outro music is great Zep and working on cars is a natural mix even with the remix you did.
Thank you for explaining, I’ve been trying to figure it out and that helps exponentially.
Finally the segments we have All been waiting for. Excited to see what engine and transmission you choose!
YES!! I'm so excited to see these videos!
Dude yes! Been waiting on this video!!
@15:32 "I dunno if anyone's scared of this or..."
I bought a minty clean black '90 325i auto a little over a year ago, and have compiled what I think are enough parts to swap. I'll be following along with you, for sure, because yep I'm totally scared of messing it up. Rebuilding the shifter mech on my '88 325e donor trans and doing the full timing service as a warm-up of sorts first.
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for making these vids. They're awesome, and I do not doubt they'll be a significant factor in the outcome of the car. Really looking forward to your future videos!
Finally! Super excited for this
Your channel is amazing! Excited to see what’s next.
Thanks for showing this! I'm collecting the parts for a manual swap on my e30 right now
great video. about to do a manual swap in my 91 vert, this video was very helpful.
I have the convertible version of your car, just found a 325es at U-pick-it and will be pulling the trans and LSD diff tomorrow! This is very good information, good luck on the rest of your build! I might start some build videos myself. Intro is my favorite Led Zeppelin song also, good choice!
Dude you are awesome !! Thanks for the detailed explanation!!
Finally !!! congratulations! !!!!!!!!
Awesome bro!
Awesome!! 👏🏻
Good video! I'm in the middle of my manual swap as well
finally! about time
*FREAKING FINALLY*
Thank you so much for the video, I'm about to swap my auto 325i with an s52 and convert to manual
Thanks for the clear shots... pulled my pedals out of an Early over a year ago and couldn't remember how they went together... just now installing them into a Late... Get those in, rebuild all the shifter bushings and crap.... and proceed with the sex change.
Glad I could help 👍🏼
Yes!
YESSSSS FINALLY
yes finally!
Yaaaasssss!
Did you figure out if the spring config for the clutch pedal was working correctly?
Did that spring act up normal . Possibly the tension of hydronic pressure will make it smooth .
Made that look easy. I need to do this because the bracket the clutch master bolts on to broke. PIA.
Anybody knows with kit of coil lowers work on my 1989 325i? I want the welder convertion
Where is part 2? Great vid...nice and clear.
I'm doing an engine and trans swap soon. Turn on notifications and subscribe for upcoming videos
Every E30 I've ever owned (13 now I think) has been able to start the car without your foot on the clutch. Not sure where that switch you were talking about at 4:30 came from, but it looks aftermarket to me, like for a 90's era alarm.
Eric Long I was wondering the same thing. My e30 starts without the clutch to the floor..
I think I read somewhere that is the cruise control switch.
I have a question. Isn't the diff ratio different for a manual from an automatic trans? You might want to swap that out too.
yeah it works but you definitely need to pick the best ratio for the application. I need to find a 3.25 LSD
Hey man Im currently doing a z3 rack swap. Do you have an Instagram that I can follow so I can follow you and get some tips I've run into so set backs
ijt540 yep, follow me @blakesgarage
hey idk if you’ll see this but i have a 1986 e30 and my clutch pedal bent sideways when i was test driving and haven’t touched it yet i also don’t know anything aboot cars
That can happen just replace it not that hard to do.
sourcing the parts as well . would you sell those extra pedals you got from the 318??
E30 Wolf yeah, for sure👍 DM me on IG @blakesgarage
Blake's Garage I messaged you on IG
That shifter is sick!!!!! Can’t wait to see it mounted
Why didnt you just cut out that extra little bit on the assembly?
What do you do so that the speedo reads correctly? I have a manual swap with 3.73 gears and my speedo is now about 5mph off a 60 mph 1990 325is
With the differential gear change you need to change the speed sensor wheel in the diff. The manual swap had nothing to do with your speed readings.
thank you!
All E30 speedos are off from the factory, they read about 65mph when actual road speed is about 60mph. You can check to see how much the speedo is off if you have a car equipped with a functional OBC by resetting the average mph while holding the car at a constant speed. The OBC sees the actual speed, the speedo reads higher. Have you compensated for this while saying that it is 5mph wrong at 60?
E30s work off axle revolutions IIRC, so the diff ratio doesnt change the speedo reading
In all honesty, the speedo sensor isnt super accurate to begin with. If youre concerned about the margin for error use a GPS speedometer on your phone. Most E30 owners just learn how much it's off and compensate for it
If you build it they will come.
Pretty stoked for this! Btw...Satbir is selling his M3 👀👀
Jacob R. Doty what! That things sick! Well if he want a video review to help sell it let me know.
lemme clean it up first lmaooo
That switch on the clutch pedal actually isn't a safety switch. It's the switch that shuts off cruise control when the clutch is pressed in. These cars didn't have safety switches. Just thought I'd let you know, not trying to be mean or anything :)
Jonah Reyes hey thanks for the info. Didn’t look up the schematic. My car does still have the cruise control I may just delete that thing then.
You're welcome dude! A few weeks back I was pulling my hair out over my 86 325e trying to figure out why it wouldn't even crank. Thinking it was that switch I spent like 2 weeks trying to figure out how to fix it until someone told me it's for the cruise control. Turned out the wire coming off of the ignition switch just came loose and I couldn't see it because the steering column was in the way. Definitely learned that one the hard way
Way easier to just bolt the clutch pedal to your existing pedal assembly. It's been covered a billion times on R3V.
myreversewave I really doubt it as removal of the whole box is 6 bolts. Also the master cylinder doesn’t have provisions for screwing the master directly to the bracket. I highly doubt working on it below the dash is easier. Sometimes it better to remove more parts to get better access.
This could be for certain applications. I know there are differences with early and late model along with airbag equipped.
if you spent that much on a sweet shifter you mayaswell have spent that much on a nice pedal box
If you need help with wiring, this guy just posted a video of how to do it.czcams.com/video/vPzvZloX4VM/video.html
