Welcome aboard, Tim & Wyatt. You are embarking on (along with many others) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular.
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with 30 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (“Domination” czcams.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/video.html), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: czcams.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/video.html, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: czcams.com/video/4uIYBkAybCI/video.html, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: czcams.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/video.html. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.).
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience.
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Naw-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 28 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

This is Band-Maid's breakout MV. They released this on FaceBook and within 2 weeks it had 2 million views. At first they thought they had hacked. It wasn't, not only was the views for real a huge number of the views were from the US and Europe. Soon after they got booked at an Asian festival in Seattle and from that they have been on the rise internationally. In 2019 they toured Europe and had 5 sold-out concerts in the US in (2)NYC, (1)Dallas, and (2) LA.
The maid outfits are to create "The Gap" meaning the difference in what you see "demure maids" vs what you are hearing Hard Rock. The Gap is popular in Japan with many bands.
While this song was not written by them, all of the others you will hear are.
They compose the music, write the lyrics, arrange the songs, and produce the songs. All of them are educated/trained professional musicians who were session/backup musicians and singers prior Band-Maid.
One last point they are Rock Band; if you want Japanese Metal (all Female) checkout Lovebites and Aldious.

There are a ton of "idol bands" in Japan where women dress 'cute' and play/sing cute music. The rhythm guitarist here, and ex-idol herself, thought it would be interesting to have a band who looked like one of those cute bands, but played hard rock instead - so she formed a band to do so.

Best LIVE rockband on earth! This was their first musicvideo and they have improved and grown A LOT since this video... You really should watch LIVE videos from their channel, pick ANYTHING, you can´t miss, they have round about 100 songs (not a bad one), they are not casted, they are writing their own songs, almost in every song a SOLO or more, a lot of energy and it´s just makes you feel good... Nice reaction, keep them coming, i can see you both enjoyed the first one. Greetings from Germany!
P.S.: All of them are great, but you should pay attention to their rhythm duo (bass, drums), they both have an JAZZ background and they know each other for a long time, it´s special...

Band-Maid consists of five incredible women:
1: Miku Kobato rhythm guitar, vocals, and founder of the band who writes all the lyrics
2: Kanami Tono lead guitar and music composer
    3: Akane Hirose Drums
    4: Misa Bass
    5: Saiki Atsumi lead vocals
Miku used to work at a maid cafe, it’s a big thing in Japan! It’s where she got the concept of starting a rock group that consists of the members wearing maid outfits. Miku was in a jpop idol group prior called lil cumin which didn’t make it! She found Kanami thru the internet who then told her she knew of a drummer that she worked with whenever she needed a drummer to help with her music, the drummer knew of an incredible Bass player she knew from music school! When they got together they sounded great except Miku didn’t feel that her voice was trinh enough for the direction they wanted to go so they auditioned for singers! Miku decided on Saiki saying she liked her voice! The funny thing is that Miku didn’t tell Saiki about the Maid outfits until the first gig, all she told her was if she was interested in join the band for some cool music! Today they are the best rock group to grace us in many years, I say since 90’ their live music is far better and they have a great time performing! Saiki has great crowd control!!! You and your son is in for a remarkable treat! We love this group! and it doesn’t matter that they’re singing in a language we don’t understand! The melody and passion that each brings out is awesome!

You've probably heard this in every comment already but Yes they are better Live, much better!
Btw they write their own songs too, the lead guitarist kanami is the main songwriter.
Miku the rhythm guitarist, one with the twin tails hairdo, is the main lyricist.
My live recommendation to start with would be- Play, Onset (instrumental), Freedom or Domination.
They're all available in their official youtube channel.

Check out any/all of Domination, Freedom, or Play (live at Line Cube Shibuya 14/2/20) or Onset (live 2018). All are on band's own channel, and all are amazing. You will not be disappointed (except when they end....). Howevere, almost any BAND-MAID song/video is worth a listen.
For info - Band members are Saiki (Sigh-key) - lead vocals, Miku (Me-coo) - backing vocals and rhythm guitar (also put the band together and is the brains behind the maid outfits - she worked in a Maid Cafe, as well as the lyricist), Kanami (Ka-nah-me) - lead guitar (and composer of most of their songs since Alone), MISA (me-sah) - bass, and Akane (Ah-kah-neh) - drums. Pronunciations are approximate.

i was not expecting that ! generally the first words i hear from a first time reaction to the MAIDS. now you've gone and done it ! you are falling into a hole from which there is no escape. and this was their first video from 2014 and they have improved greatly since. as a contrast next up should be their mv 'dice' from 2018. you will see a great improvement. then you have only about 50 or more songs to check out. after you get melted by the maids be sure to see japanese power metal girl group LOVEBITES. you do not want to pass them up. start with the song 'shadowmaker' and go from there. best metal group on the planet

Thrill was Band Maid's very first music video and it shows you almost everything you need to know about the group, great vocals, great guitar, great bass, and solid drumming. I said "almost" because the one thing Thrill does not show you is just how great Band Maid's drummer, Akane, is when unleashed on a full set of drums. Also, whenever people react to both BabyMetal and Band Maid, the conversation will eventually get around to comparing the two. I love them both but cannot compare them musically because they are two completely different entities. I can explain the difference between them though. Band Maid is simply the best rock band on the planet today. BabyMetal is something more, a state of mind, an unstoppable movement, and a force for good. It was BabyMetal that led me to Band Maid, and to Wagakki Band, and to Doll$Boxx, Sakura Gakuin, Sabaton, and the Hu Band.

  • @deth2munkies
    @deth2munkies Před 3 lety +7

Trivia time: Thrill was their first ever music video. At this time, they recently added their main singer and their old singer (and the band founder) became the backup vocalist/rhythm guitarist...except she had no idea how to play guitar. If you pay close enough attention you'll notice she's really just fake strumming in their first few MVs before she becomes much more confident. You can see her improvement made manifest in their live stuff. Also, they did not write Thrill or any of their first couple albums (except the last song on the 2nd album), but they have since begun writing all of their own music, and IMO it's been a big step up. They've also spiced up their old songs when they perform them live, such as in their last online concert a couple weeks ago where they performed Thrill with some changed up and extended solos.

They write their own music now, their instruments are the best and expensive, their costumes are always changing but they are always maids, the venues are getting bigger, their film clips are really good, their concerts go for over two hours and they never take a backward step they just keep getting better and better. They sound better live than most bands do in the studio. 𝕐𝔼ℙ improvement.

Japanese women rockers have been on fire the past decade. BabyMetal has the backing Kami band, definitely metal, but mish mash styles, then pop girl voices. BandMaid is the line of hard rock & metal, and mostly retro, but 70s Black Sabbath? 1990 Guns n Roses? Or 2000s Rise Against?
Most Japanese bands use a smattering of English, BandMaid uses more, up to nearly half (Domination) or all (twice: Dragon Cries, Don’t Let Me Down).
Try Lovebites. Named after the Halestorm song. Yes there’s still an accent (often subtitles to turn on), but it’s 100% English lyrics by Japanese females, and there is no doubt it’s Metal! Some thrash(SLAYER), some power(Stratovarius), some symphonic(Nightwish), some classic(Judas Priest), lots of it retro, yet improved somehow....
Pick anything that’s 2020 live, the Five of a Kind DVD is nearly flawless. Enjoy!

In Japan there are maid cafes. Miku Kobato (red flower) worked in one and was inspired to start a rock band with a maid theme, she liked the contrast, the "gap". She was already in a small idol group Lil Cumin. She found the lead guitarist, Kanami Tono AKA Mincho, from an online video. Kanami had worked with the drummer, Akane Hirose AKA A-chan. Akane knew MISA from Tokyo Music School.
Miku started out as the lead vocalist but decided they needed a voice more suitable for the rock sound, so they found Saiki Atsumi AKA Sai-chan by audition. Miku then went and learned to play rhythm guitar! They just had their 7th anniversary. And like Babymetal and other Japanese bands, they are better live. General background: In Japan, hostess/host bars are common. Think... Hooters, but less overtly sexual (usually, but not always), and more... it's not intimate, it's not personal... just more face to face, as the host/hostess sits with you. You can have superficial conversations with your host/hostess, and you would generally buy them drinks, etc. I've never been to Japan, I just know they exist so take this as a VERY general explanation. A sub-genre of these establishments are maid cafes, where the hostesses are all dressed as maids. Miku (rhythm guitarist, red flower in her hair) used to work in a maid cafe, and thought the mix of the kawii (cutesy) maid image would make an interesting clash with hard rock music. Her management group agreed to back the idea, she gathered players and they happened to be super hella talented but more or less unknown. They took a few years to get some traction and be allowed to write their own music, but have taken off since.

Band-Maid is an incredible rock band with lots of different influences and they definitely have a throwback sound but not 80s thrash metal. That's Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, etc. For a female Japanese band with a classic heavy metal sound with a ton of power metal and thrash influence, check out LOVEBITES. Like Band-Maid, they're incredible live. A good starting point is Thunder Vengeance which opened the show for their recent concert bluray/DVD. It's on their official YT channel. Just stay away from the Bloodstock show as the audio sucks.

They are hard rock fusion.. This is very early, one of their first MV's. They are much better live.. Basically the labels in Japan look for "the Gap". The Gap is a thing in Japanese media of putting two unusual things together to make listeners think twice about what they see, verse what they hear.. Like a kick ass rock band of very talented musicians, dressed in French maid dresses.. Actually the band founder "Miku" "rhythm guitar / backing vocals" worked for a time in a traditional Japanese Maid Cafe. That's where the Maid persona originated from..
