- Welcome to my art studio makeover and tour of my small home painting studio, updated in 2023! I decided to go dark and moody with an accent wall, inspired by dark academia, to create a little bit of drama while keeping the look minimalist and clean. I absolutely loved transforming my cozy tiny studio, and this video walks you through the redesign from start to finish. Since I'm working in a small home studio with very little space, I much prefer this new minimalist, contemporary look with hints of vintage. This video also tours you through my new studio storage system, including how I organize my paints, where I store my art supplies, and more.
I was initially skeptical of the new wall colour, but when I compare the footage of the white to the charcoal, it’s not even a close competition; I am fully Team Dark Side. The new accent wall has personality and feels oh so cozy at night.
For the peony acrylic flower painting course, I will be releasing the full course through my website, but I will also post a consolidated version to CZcams for free that will show a quick timelapse. The course itself will be several hours long and will demonstrate the painting in real time, in addition to offering modules on materials, canvas preparation, transferring the drawing, colour mixing and theory, and more. I am also writing an accompanying syllabus with shopping lists, detailed written breakdowns, and more. You will also gain access to an exclusive Facebook group just for students of the course, which I will personally moderate to answer any questions.
I want students in this course to feel like it exceeded their expectations in every single aspect, so I am going above and beyond to make it special. Regardless of where you are located in the world, your learning experience matters deeply to me. I’m a teacher first and foremost, and artist second.
In the interim, while I’m editing the peony footage, I will be releasing tons of sketchbook related content, since I am currently keeping sketchbooks in a variety of mediums. First up will be an acrylic painting spread of a northern Ontario landscape, so stay tuned! I also have two brand new sketchbooks that you may have spotted in the tour…I have ambitious plans for those, as I plan to use the one to marry my love of food with art.
My blog is getting rebooted and will form the spine of future podcast episodes. There is so much in the works in this studio space and I am bursting to share it all with you.
I am beyond grateful for your support of my teaching, and if there's anything you'd like to see in a future video, please don't hesitate to write me a comment!

Quick synopsis of materials and finishes used in the video:
- Wall colour: Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore, in the Regal Select UltraMatte finish (not durable at all and hard to clean, but super flat for filming, which is my priority)
- Desk stain: Special Walnut by Varathane
- My preferred sketchbooks: Zeta series by Stillman & Birn, I typically buy the hardcover in the 8.5x11" size. I like the Zeta series because it's hot press paper, but if you prefer cold press, their Beta series is also fantastic

I am so glad I found you and look forward to learning more about acrylic and oil painting.
I’m so glad you found me too!!!
I think I have found my new favorite comfort art youtube 😍😍😍. You have a lovely voice and you painting are out of this world. Plus the putting that charcoal black paint really was a perfect touch, Gave the studio such a comfort atmosphere. My eyes have been blessed 🥰.
Oh what a beautiful comment, thank you so much! I’m so happy you found me!!!
This art space is so lovely! Combining antiques with contemporary items is what I also love.
What I need to fix my space is a massive declutter. My art room is also a storage space so there is a lot of 'stuff' to work around. Not very conducive to creating. I procrastinate this big job because making those hard decisions is.. hard! LOL.
I completely agree with you about hard decisions! Believe it or not, I am going to be painting over that dark wall very shortly...as much as I want to love the dark and moody, it didn't translate well on camera and doesn't feel like me. I'm going to be taking inspiration from the Light Academia trend, and it sounds like you'd love that style too since it's all about a fusion of antiques into the workspace! Happy decluttering!
@@MarianneVanderDussen Yes! It sounds lovely.
Hello Marianne, loved your last studio setup, and this one's just as BEAUTIFUL, thank you for sharing!! And the paintings in your book are GORGEOUS!!🥰
This reminds of a time when my youngest son asked me "why do you change your work space every few months?" And I simply told him "because change is good" and it's good to help with creativity!! Having his own place he gets it now!!❤️🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼
I absolutely love this!!!! Change is SO good, it really does keep the mind stimulated and reflect who we are at any given season. If we evolve and grow, so too should our spaces!!!
@@MarianneVanderDussen I love this Marianne!!🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼
I love this darker, moodier home style fashion too. Actually, I'm also making little changes to my home to make it look more cozy and less bright and white. I also wanted to thank you for providing such great tutorials and inspiration. I will try out painting with oils into my journal too:).
Oh my gosh YAY you’ve made me so happy!!! The sketchbooks have honestly filled my life with so much joy and I’m genuinely thrilled you’ll be giving the oil on paper a try!!!

I Love the make overs- really enjoyed the first set up and can’t wait to watch this episode!!! I’m working on turning my guest room/junk room/room bordering hoarders 😅 - I have such a great reference now! Thank you so much!!!❤@@MarianneVanderDussen

Wow, thank you so much! Comments like this make me want to run for my brushes and start creating!
I love the simplicity of your studio, inspiring me is lovely.:)
Oh I'm so happy you like it!
stunnng
I'm going to be spending a LOT of time teaching sketchbooks in the next few months (in all mediums, but starting with acrylic paint), including one dedicated entirely to food 🥰 I'm also going to be talking more about the books in my collection and how they've helped me become a better artist. What kind of tutorials would you like to see in this new space? Let me know!!!
Hello, there!! I'm relatively new to your channel!! I'd like to know a bit more about your practice; seeing everything as a "completed" work can feel overwhelming. I think seeing how and what you practice would be wonderful. How do you sharpen your skills? How do you practice composition? Thank you for the opportunity to provide feedback! PS - the Twyla Tharp book helped me SO MUCH!!
@@TheMrsWarhol love these ideas! I am definitely going to save this comment and come back to it!!! (I love Twyla Tharp too, her story about the yellow towel in the Broadway comedy has become a metaphor for me whenever I feel like something is slightly off)
@@MarianneVanderDussen Wow - thanks for replying!! I should have also told you that I LOVE your studio re-do!! So beautiful!! The warm charcoal seems wonderful, even in summer!!
@@TheMrsWarholthank you so much!!! And yes I always try to reply, I appreciate the time it takes to reach out and write a comment and I love interacting with other artists!
@@MarianneVanderDussen ❤️❤️❤️
Love your new studio update.
Thank you! When the dark and moody colours were first making their appearance I never thought I'd be a convert, but here we are...and I still love it.
I'd love the lights in the cabinet! I have a billy shelf and will do the same.
Oooooooh let me know which lights you wind up using, maybe I’ll do the same!!!
I think colorful lights would be beautiful.
Good idea!
Thank you for this video 🙂I really enjoyed watching the transformation of your studio.
Thank you so much, Diana! I’m so happy you enjoyed this video!!!
👏👏👏
Your art is beautiful but your voice; you could absolutely be a voice actor for audiobooks, wow 😍
Wow, thank you! It's certainly something I'm considering if this whole art thing doesn't work out!!!
I love your studio. One thing i would recommend is a clear plastic shelf liner under your liquid jars in case they leak. It makes such a difference when your happy place fits all of your needs and you want to stay there longer.
Great suggestion! And yes, I practically want to move into this room, and probably would if I could!!!
I think the cabinet lighting would look so pretty!!❤️
And consider painting the inside back panel of the cabinet that charcoal color.
That's an awesome makeover! What a cozy studio.
Thank you so much, Tony! It took a bit for me to warm up to the dark but I can’t imagine it any other way now!
What a beautiful and cosy studio make over, and I really enjoyed the video. So relaxing and well edited. :)
Thank you so much!!!
love it! I always preferred dark rich colors rather than white or plain black
I never thought I'd stray from the White Everything Look of the 2010s, but now that I'm here I am definitely loving those dark rich colours too!!! Funny how you swear a look is "timeless" and then a few years later you switch it up and are thrilled 😂
@@MarianneVanderDussen right! its fun! I'm all about vintage myself, and dark wood
@@StarryDreamer28 I'm totally on your team now!
Thank you for sharing. I will be redecorating my studio soon and I will be using your decorating ideas. It is beautiful. Thank you.
Oh yay, I'm so glad this is helpful! The cabinets are definitely my favourite feature, it has made a huge difference in clutter in here.
Your new studio makeover is beautiful I really like it very much, I need to do something like this right now is chaos lol...
Thank you so much!!! And I feel you on the chaos, I’m just finishing a project and my organization always falls to pieces near the end of a long haul!
Your art painters very interesting
Great job, beautiful work space.
Thank you so much, Roz!!! I am SO excited to start filming a new tutorial in here next week!!
This studio makeover is really lovely and classic looking! So inspiring. I'm hoping since you are in Canada that your Amazon affiliate page is also in Canada!

Yay!!! Thank you so much, that makes my day!!!
The whole space is really lovely! Your opinion on useful books would be most welcome and I'm looking forward to the Peony course 😃
Thank you so much, Ashleigh! I can't wait to talk about all those books on the shelf, they're so wonderful and have helped me immensely. I can't wait to release the peony course!
Love the new look! So inviting!
Thank you so much!!! It definitely took me some time to warm up to the dark, but I can’t imagine ever going back now.
