HOW TO FIX a Cracked Aquarium, "I'm Broke with a Broken Aquarium"

  • This is how you fix a broken aquarium when you are broke. You want a working fish tank, but you need to repair the glass on a broken aquarium. The first thing you want to do is make sure you have all of the right materials for it. I had a bunch of acrylic laying around but you can use store bought materials at home depot.

    You will need a TON of aquarium sealant, like 50% more than what you think you need. this is your one shot at fixing it so get crazy with it. Cutting the acrylic is the hardest part. It takes forever, you need to go slow so that you don't splinter or break the acrylic.
    So to sum it up, to repair cracked fish tank, get some aquarium safe silicon, get some acrylic, cut the acrylic, apply tons of sealant and put the acrylic on there. Done.

    Nice try! Definitely worth a go if that's all you've got.In my experience acrylic doesn't work as well with silicone as glass. Sometimes you can rough it up with a bit of sand paper first to help get better adhesion, but it doesn't always work.In the UK acrylic is really expensive so I would have probably have opted for glass if the fix was mine. Although another alternative would be to knock the tank down and either keep the pieces as spares for making new tanks in the future or for repairs like this. If you are comfortable cutting glass, making a smaller tank out of the remaining pieces is another option.Also if you are trying this repair the I would advise laying the tank with the broken side down. So that when you are putting pressure on the repair you can just put some heavy books or other weights on it to get a really good seal.Love the fact that you're trying to get as many people into the hobby as possible, keep it up man!

    Just something funny; I tried to cut a piece of glass for one of my aquariums in my living room. I couldn't break it after making the cut so I took it outside, tried to pop the glass off and then the whole thing exploded into a million pieces! The "tempered glass" logo was barely visible on the glass so I didn't know. Glad I took it outside, girlfriend would've killed me! LoL

    I got a acrylic 5ft long 18in wide 80 gallon aquarium with stand and five large dual waterfall HOB filters (that work)for $20! It was sitting on his porch. But it has a bad scar on it that can't be buffed out. I hate looking at it! I wish I could pour some kind of liquid filler in the scar to cover it up. I might cut the aquarium height down below the large scatch and make it a shallow river biotope. IDK.

    Question! The bottom of my 150 gallon long (5x2x2ft) tank cracked on the bottom sheet from front to back while moving it in my truck. The sheet that cracked is a 5x2 ft 3/4 inch thick annealed sheet, I went ahead and removed the two pieces of glass. I can't get any glass 3/4 inch thick and was wondering if I replace it with a 1/2 inch thick sheet of tempered glass will that be fine? Reduction of thickness but trying to compensate with the extra strength. Also the tank never had any cross supports on the bottom, just was never made with them I guess!

    Hey man i just picked a 50 gal from the street for free, but the black edges if plastic are fallin off because its really old. is that fine? or does that actually break the integrity of the tank?

    • @jerichojoe307
      @jerichojoe307 Před 6 lety

      There are plenty of rimless tanks out there that are constructed and no differently than the tanks with those plastic rims they just don't put the plastic rims on it, if you're worried about structural Integrity than strip the tank down Andre silicone it a new Bond of silicon will ensure that the glass will hold if it's a large tank than I was suggest putting a large Euro brace or regular bracing across the top the bottom pretty much braces itself as all four corners of the glass are in contact with it whereas the top usually would need a brace if it's a large tank because it doesn't have anything to hold on to. I have 3 rimless tanks myself all glass no rims and only one of them has a center eurobrace I've never had an issue with bowing any leaks or collapse

    1. Acrylic doesnt stick/bond to glass. Acrylic with acrylic or glass with glass.
    2. You shouda flipped the tank, crack side down and put pressure on it so the silicone can work its way into the cracks. Or...
    3. If unable to flip the tank, use gloves and smear the silicone in the cracks.

    Your crazy Dustin. I've always wanted to do that with a tank. That must have been a really old one cause most made in the last 20 years use tempered glass. Question, how can I post a picture of my ghetto tank you help me setup. Or should I post my own video thanking you.

    • @gromit2478
      @gromit2478 Před 8 lety

      +geekbot5000 I don't believe tempered glass is used. I think its just plain old float/ plate glass. You can usually cut glass on old tanks, I think it just shatters with tempered. I might be wrong though?

    • @MarisaAndChew
      @MarisaAndChew Před 8 lety

      +gromit2478 New aquarium kits say on them whether or not they can be drilled. Most say something like "warning glass cannot be cut or drilled" so that would be tempered glass. If you ever think you will be doing a tank that requires you to cut holes for overflow and pumps etc then be sure to research the glass before you make a big purchase!

      Get them in a much bigger tank... Anything under 5 isn't big enough for even one fish let alone 3 and wildcaught I'd suggest at bare absolute minimum a 20 long... Actually, let them go where you found them... They probably need live food and you obviously haven't done any research.

    I've never repaired one before but I did get a nice 30 gallon high from a guy for $5.00 bucks once. Someone had dropped a rock inside it and cracked the bottom of it. He left the old bottom in and siliconed up the bottom all around the edges and threw another piece of glass, cut to the same size, into it. Worked great! Never had any leaking issues with it. It became an awesome looking tank. So, about yours, could you replace the glass on the whole broken side?

    • @Dustinsfishtanks
      @Dustinsfishtanks  Před 8 lety +1

      +lizzyanthus1 great to hear on the 30 gallon. it worked for me back in the day on the 55.... so yes- you can replace a whole piece. i have never done it but my boy Bryan was actually just talking about doing this on his 125....he's anal and will probably nail it...be looking for a video- no clue when as it was just a convo......... You could also do what you did on the bottom on the one side of a 75......if i had had a full size piece or close to it and more silicon this would have worked...... i actually went too light the in bottom corner....if i had been redoing this for real, i would have power slammed it with caulk...let me know- tank on

      +Dustin's Fish Tanks Thanks. Sadly I don't have the 30 gallon nor any tanks at the moment. Trying to get back into the hobby, albeit on a budget. LOL. Just got a 5 gallon for a buck at a yard sale yesterday, and am hoping it doesn't leak. I want to start out with a small tank and definitely a low teck one. Trying to watch all I can and learn what I can first. Love your channel by the way, a great help! It did answer a question I had about dirt. I see just any dirt will work! I've got pretty sandy soil here so don't know about that. Anyhow, thanks for all the video's you do. Love them!
