HOW TO FIX a Cracked Aquarium, "I'm Broke with a Broken Aquarium"

- This is how you fix a broken aquarium when you are broke. You want a working fish tank, but you need to repair the glass on a broken aquarium. The first thing you want to do is make sure you have all of the right materials for it. I had a bunch of acrylic laying around but you can use store bought materials at home depot.

You will need a TON of aquarium sealant, like 50% more than what you think you need. this is your one shot at fixing it so get crazy with it. Cutting the acrylic is the hardest part. It takes forever, you need to go slow so that you don't splinter or break the acrylic.
So to sum it up, to repair cracked fish tank, get some aquarium safe silicon, get some acrylic, cut the acrylic, apply tons of sealant and put the acrylic on there. Done.
by the way this was a bitch to clean up after.....glass and acrylic everywhere..... still
Awesome video for sure!! I cracked the side of my 55 gallon being an idiot and I'm hoping I can repair it. But I am no longer nervous about trying to fix it. You have completely set my kind at ease. Great video!!
Make sure it’s a small crack!!
4 yrs later how did your repair go? How long did it last or still lasting?
"If it doesn't work, smash it with a hammer!" Classic Lol
When I was a kid fixed a crack in the bottom of my 55gal with duct tape.
😯 how long did it last? Lol
Cool tank filter
you smashed it! man this is gonna take some getting over
Shout out from 2023 my guy! Still very relevant and useful video
awesome video, can you please make like a tank tour vid
Nice try! Definitely worth a go if that's all you've got.In my experience acrylic doesn't work as well with silicone as glass. Sometimes you can rough it up with a bit of sand paper first to help get better adhesion, but it doesn't always work.In the UK acrylic is really expensive so I would have probably have opted for glass if the fix was mine. Although another alternative would be to knock the tank down and either keep the pieces as spares for making new tanks in the future or for repairs like this. If you are comfortable cutting glass, making a smaller tank out of the remaining pieces is another option. Also if you are trying this repair the I would advise laying the tank with the broken side down. So that when you are putting pressure on the repair you can just put some heavy books or other weights on it to get a really good seal.Love the fact that you're trying to get as many people into the hobby as possible, keep it up man!
Enjoyed this video!!!
This was awesome:)
Just something funny; I tried to cut a piece of glass for one of my aquariums in my living room. I couldn't break it after making the cut so I took it outside, tried to pop the glass off and then the whole thing exploded into a million pieces! The "tempered glass" logo was barely visible on the glass so I didn't know. Glad I took it outside, girlfriend would've killed me! LoL
+Jonathan Simpson that sucks- i have never had it happen- but can only image. you were lucky it was outside....GF's don't usually like broken glass. I have never been able to cut glass....never really tried, but hey- at least ya gave it a shot! Tank on!
VERY VERY HELPFUL VIDEOS YOU HAVE
A dustin I just got two convict cichlids I'm trying to breed them got any tips?
Sucks it didn't work, but cool video...I am going to try this with my tank it's not that big and the crack is on one of the side panels so maybe I'll have better luck...thanks for the great tip and cool video!
Just used the CD cover fix from the Ghetto Aquarium video on my 10 gal. Thanks Dustin!
I got a acrylic 5ft long 18in wide 80 gallon aquarium with stand and five large dual waterfall HOB filters (that work)for $20! It was sitting on his porch. But it has a bad scar on it that can't be buffed out. I hate looking at it! I wish I could pour some kind of liquid filler in the scar to cover it up. I might cut the aquarium height down below the large scatch and make it a shallow river biotope. IDK.
Question! The bottom of my 150 gallon long (5x2x2ft) tank cracked on the bottom sheet from front to back while moving it in my truck. The sheet that cracked is a 5x2 ft 3/4 inch thick annealed sheet, I went ahead and removed the two pieces of glass. I can't get any glass 3/4 inch thick and was wondering if I replace it with a 1/2 inch thick sheet of tempered glass will that be fine? Reduction of thickness but trying to compensate with the extra strength. Also the tank never had any cross supports on the bottom, just was never made with them I guess!
Hey Dustin could you do a video on how to get ride of hard water stains? I got a 30 gallon off craigslist for REALLY cheap but has some water stains. Was wondering if you could do a video on it? Thanks love the vids
+nicksmith1123 vinegar.....look up the "king of DIY'......he has vids on it.
Well at least he's keeping it real. Method doesn't work, he just tears it down. I love it!
+hanzifaction haha- it was a hail marry
lol gangster fish tank ending
+Scott Harrison we try to get a little gangster on occasion
man you are very very awsome
You're bloody hilarious
Dustan, love you bro but couldn't you have cleaned the tank at least gently so it looks like it should be done. Oh by the way; love the Orchestrations.
I would do this for a bottom but I don't know if I could deal with the sides looking like that lol
so i bought a 75 gallon and on the way home i got in a car accident. one side of it is shattered. its for my blue tongue skink so it doesnt have to be air tight but any tips?
"That's how you do a water change" haha best part
+Kealan haha. thanks
love the attempt D. but if you saw that cracked repair on anyone else's tank you'd of said no freaking way. looks like you have some new tops once you break it down.
+mikec7777 for sure....but we had to try it right-........ what if it worked? I had the stuff.....it held water actually a little better than i thought it would have.....and if i had had one solid piece and more silcon, I'd bet you the rimless it would have held.....tank on
Hey man i just picked a 50 gal from the street for free, but the black edges if plastic are fallin off because its really old. is that fine? or does that actually break the integrity of the tank?
There are plenty of rimless tanks out there that are constructed and no differently than the tanks with those plastic rims they just don't put the plastic rims on it, if you're worried about structural Integrity than strip the tank down Andre silicone it a new Bond of silicon will ensure that the glass will hold if it's a large tank than I was suggest putting a large Euro brace or regular bracing across the top the bottom pretty much braces itself as all four corners of the glass are in contact with it whereas the top usually would need a brace if it's a large tank because it doesn't have anything to hold on to. I have 3 rimless tanks myself all glass no rims and only one of them has a center eurobrace I've never had an issue with bowing any leaks or collapse
99% of HOW TO videos one here "DUHH ON YESTERDAYS TOMORROW I NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE SO I'M GOING TO MAKE A HOW TO VIDEO TO SHOW YOU HOW TO DO THIS THING I HAVE NEVER DONE FUCKING WRONG AND MY FAVORITE COLOR IS CLEAR"
are carbon pellets good for freshwater plants
1. Acrylic doesnt stick/bond to glass. Acrylic with acrylic or glass with glass.
2. You shouda flipped the tank, crack side down and put pressure on it so the silicone can work its way into the cracks. Or...
3. If unable to flip the tank, use gloves and smear the silicone in the cracks.
That was spiritual dude
Your crazy Dustin. I've always wanted to do that with a tank. That must have been a really old one cause most made in the last 20 years use tempered glass. Question, how can I post a picture of my ghetto tank you help me setup. Or should I post my own video thanking you.
+geekbot5000 I don't believe tempered glass is used. I think its just plain old float/ plate glass. You can usually cut glass on old tanks, I think it just shatters with tempered. I might be wrong though?
+gromit2478 New aquarium kits say on them whether or not they can be drilled. Most say something like "warning glass cannot be cut or drilled" so that would be tempered glass. If you ever think you will be doing a tank that requires you to cut holes for overflow and pumps etc then be sure to research the glass before you make a big purchase!
I've never seen that before. Although I've never had to drill one before.

I used gorilla tape to hold my 20 gallon together. Worked for as long as it took me to go get a tank in storage and set it all up.
Professional time killer but ok worth the fun
hey man can you help me I have 3 fish in a 1.5g tank and two are not eating. wild caught from a over flow it dray up now
Get them in a much bigger tank... Anything under 5 isn't big enough for even one fish let alone 3 and wildcaught I'd suggest at bare absolute minimum a 20 long... Actually, let them go where you found them... They probably need live food and you obviously haven't done any research.
It's dry up now and evey fish there is dead
I've never repaired one before but I did get a nice 30 gallon high from a guy for $5.00 bucks once. Someone had dropped a rock inside it and cracked the bottom of it. He left the old bottom in and siliconed up the bottom all around the edges and threw another piece of glass, cut to the same size, into it. Worked great! Never had any leaking issues with it. It became an awesome looking tank. So, about yours, could you replace the glass on the whole broken side?
+lizzyanthus1 great to hear on the 30 gallon. it worked for me back in the day on the 55.... so yes- you can replace a whole piece. i have never done it but my boy Bryan was actually just talking about doing this on his 125....he's anal and will probably nail it...be looking for a video- no clue when as it was just a convo......... You could also do what you did on the bottom on the one side of a 75......if i had had a full size piece or close to it and more silicon this would have worked...... i actually went too light the in bottom corner....if i had been redoing this for real, i would have power slammed it with caulk...let me know- tank on
+Dustin's Fish Tanks Thanks. Sadly I don't have the 30 gallon nor any tanks at the moment. Trying to get back into the hobby, albeit on a budget. LOL. Just got a 5 gallon for a buck at a yard sale yesterday, and am hoping it doesn't leak. I want to start out with a small tank and definitely a low teck one. Trying to watch all I can and learn what I can first. Love your channel by the way, a great help! It did answer a question I had about dirt. I see just any dirt will work! I've got pretty sandy soil here so don't know about that. Anyhow, thanks for all the video's you do. Love them!
You should have put a good bead around the around the edges of the acrylic. Def. around the inside corner, inside lip of the top and the corner at the bottom. 75 gal. down the crapper. B.t the way the Ghetto was destroyed for new expansion. How about the Po Boys edition?
I think you may have had better luck spreading caulk across the crack first then apply the acrylic. Allow 24 hr to cure, fill it and then smack it with a hammer.
you could have put some silicone on the outside of the tank aswell! but shit ive always wanted to see what would happen if I smashed a filled tank. looks like fun!!!!!!
+Talon C outside won't do jack imo.....i needed like two more tubes to make it work....yeah- it was a good time to smash it :) Tank on
Lol Dustin keeping it real 🤴
wait what. are you in the findlay area?????
silicon will NOT stick to acrylic you know right?
do you have any tips on fixing scratched glass?
+Steven Traina never tried it on a tank, but you can get windshield crack and chip repair kits from the auto store and it obviously dries perfectly clear without distortion. Have used it on my car but not my tank, think it is around 10 dollars depending on how much you need. Hope this helps!!
+Marisa S thank you I'll have to look into it and make sure it's safe for fish as my scratches are on the inside :)
+Steven Traina how did it turn out?
+AquaLady 420 (HoodChick) I looked into it a little, need to read more on it, but so far looks like it may be ok for fish. I may test it on a small tank with some wild caught mosquito fish
Steven Traina appreciate your response. I have very deep scratches in my 125 that is yet to be set up. If I do use this repair kit, how should I rid the toxins?
I kept applying as much silicone as I could. It still leaked.
I smashed the the side, hoping to make something else out of it. (lizard tank, etc.)
Ended up smashing the hell out of it because I didn't succeed.
+that one fish guy this always makes me feel better. some times it just is what it is
i like tha end but i think u coulda made a bigger splash lol
+That Purple thats all i got- it was reinforced well from behind....ya cant exactly reshoot that either
:)
6:54 look a cat on the right
LOL YEA !! Smash it !!!
If the tank Would held the water after your repairs, I recommend using universal rock for the background , no one would've ever known that it was ever cracked after using universal rock
Master D
That's a fucking waste of silicone lol :) I give this a thumbs up :)
Hahaha nice finish
I mean you are scratching the heck out of it!! OH LORD!!
Don't take a hammer to a tetra brand tank that large! You'd get washed across the yard!
Sup dawg
Here is a more recent attempt at a silicone repair.... Not as massive of a crack! czcams.com/video/6KfQIg11vDI/video.html
Yeah how to do a water change, u r one funny guy.
If it was me i would of removed the broken glass panel with fishing wire, and replaced with a new piece. You would then have a trustworthy tank.
But then that would not be entertaining or funny. Keep up the great work dude.
+RIFT CULTURE I have never done a full panel repair....and I sure as hell would never trust one.....but i'd love to see it done....Yes- we are having fun too :)
"and if it doesn't work smash it with a hammer".............😎
Was that hidden message in between the lines. Do not try to fix cracked large tank ever?! Just buy new. You will be safe. And your house too.
I fixed plenty of cracked tanks with no problems.
Out of his own mouth..
Dont trust an aquarium that has been repaired ...
No need to watch any further. Lol. God bless your honesty. Jesus is seeking your heart
Quick water change nice Cleaning glass never fun
this is hard to watch. love Dustin but what a hack job lol
it says not to use that sort of silicone its toxic
why would he not clean the fish tank first?
you should have shot it lol
+Billybob Yarmas hahaha. this would have been a way better ending
Enough with the diy. Let joey do that. i wanna see more fish rooms, jungle series and species sunday.
+Sotdot ....patients. i have had this crap sitting around, why not try a ghetto fix. i am about to have some insane fishrooms really soon... hang tight
+Dustin's Fish Tanks *patience.
Gave a good twist to your vids. If people don't like it...
lol ur funny
Getto 😂😂😂
Complete failure of a DIY video, but a complete success for entertainment purposes.
+Eric K what if it worked ? :)
why would you even post this video it your plan didn't even work?
LOL since when did posting CZcams videos have to be about success?
First
Very dirty glasses, common men, buy new one
But then it wouldn't be ghetto now then would it
