  • In the penultimate episode of our exhibition film series ‘Charleston: The Bloomsbury Muse’, Philip discusses an early masterpiece by Vanessa Bell - a still life of dahlias, chrysanthemums and begonias by Vanessa Bell.
Painted in 1912, this radical work perfectly represents the moment “human character changed” as Virginia Woolf expressed the arrival of modernism in London with the exhibition ‘Manet and the Post Impressionists’ (1910). It was orchestrated by the critic, artist and painter Roger Fry who was also for a period Bell’s lover. The exhibition included ground-breaking continental artists including Gaugin, Manet and Cezanne and encouraged Vanessa’s bold use of colour, shape and form thereafter
This work is currently on display in our current exhibition ‘Charleston: The Bloomsbury Muse’ until 10th November.

Thank you for celebrating so many female artists who would otherwise be left in the shadows.

There isn't much that's still about this still-life. The painting is so beautiful and vibrant and alive...I feel energized just looking at it.

Amazing coincidence you post that and I'm lifting Dahlias at the same time. Did the Crysanths Saturday. Amazing plants , haven't gone out of fashion since that painting 😁
