as a game dev (working on my first large project), realism should never come before gameplay _unless_ the entire game is structured like that. slow monkey bars may be more real-feeling, but in an otherwise fast platformer, they're way too jarring.
Why would they even go for realism In a game where a mutated orange bandicoot tries to stop a yellow skinned doctor who has made a jacked kuala with tiny legs??
the 2000s were... weird.
Especially when the previous games in the series were much faster about it too.
Crash is a strong mutant with long arms, have you ever seen a chimpanzee on monkey bars?
That's like if realistic flight simulator devs put random rainbow rings in the sky that boost you 🎉
I really liked the original story for this game: instead of the Elementals, it had Cortex turning five planets into global-scale experiments where he greatly changed one variable, like magnified sun rays for a fire world or flooding for a water world. Every planet had a Cortex research station controlling the conditions (which we still see in WoC as the fifth levels of each warp room). It's such an interesting evil scientist-style plot which I hope we see more of in future games.
By the way, Crash Bandicoot 4 (2020) has done things to me; after getting 106%, I started feeling the urge to binge-rewatch your video about getting platinum relics in every Crash game and revisit older Crash games as a completionist and platinum relics collector.
I've got all the platinum relics in the N. Sane Trilogy and in TWOC by the beginning of June and now I'm almost done with Crash Nitro Kart.
Which has possibly some of the worst platinum relics I've seen in a Crash game so far.

Personally, I like to think Crunch was actually created by Brio, who may have been holding on to the Orange Gem after Crash 1. Cortex could've stolen him before he was finished, hence the metal hand and Crunch needing the aid of Elementals, despite Cortex telling him how he was his "greatest creation" and all that.
I feel a big problem that TWOC has is aside from being clunky, is that it just doesn't have enough to distinguish itself from the earlier games. The cutscenes are the hologram from Crash 2 and the pre-level dialogue from Warped, when it would've been much more interesting if there were cutscenes where Crunch bounced off of the personalities of the Elementals, he gets frustrated, he goes overboard, leading to him breaking the Cortex Vortex, and he's freed to join the other Bandicoots.
Going forward, Crunch had potential to be a good character, but he eventually just became a Mr T parody, and even in the beat 'em ups games, where playing as him actually could've been fun, he's barely used. Maybe if he gets used in a later game or the rumored TV show, they can actually DO something with him.
Soooooooo, I know this is kinda late but um.... You know the platinum relic in Gold Rush where you need to use I-Frames from getting hit to glitch run on the bottomless pits?
That can be done on any level. Droid Void included. I did it. I tested it a few times. It's not ideal, but it can save you a few tiny seconds if done right. But you already finished the game so er.... Bit pointless mentioning it, eh?
But still useful info for future banookas trying to plat the levels!

That sure was quite an endeavor. I remember how as a kid, my maximum % was 79% and couldnt get anymore, until I grew older, I decided to pay this game a revisit and got 106%, but Platinums mixed with golds.
Solely because of Eskimo Roll. The platinum relic back then was too difficult for me to obtain and now, im starting to wonder... HOW THE FUCK did I get 29:38 in Weathering Heights?!?!?! I cant seem to beat it lol
Crunch is kind of pathetic in the final boss fight.
He just pushes a couple buttons and then collapses from exhaustion.
I am more athletic than that.
And then after he's shot, he punches Cortex because [ERROR, REASON NOT FOUND].
The implications is either Crunch gets angry at Cortex for letting him get harmed or that the Bazooka shot temporality free him from the brainwash and allows him to fight back against Cortex

@@vario6492 It's probably because the masks posses Crunch to some degree: just like Uka Uka was shown to be able to do it to Cortex in the third game. Because Crunch is, technically speaking, fighting alone by summoning the Elemental Masks instead of harnessing their power, Cortex hold on Crunch is at its weakest.
Tbh I didn’t grow up with any of the ps1 crash games… playing the ps2 ones instead. The one I enjoyed a lot were twoc and tag team… tag team was chaotic and broken and twoc was fun to me xd I understand why most people hate twoc and tag team but to me at least they were amazing

Someone suggested the Gex games, and I would Love to see Caddy 100% the two 3D ones.
Especially since I'd assume he'd use the EU version, and no offense to Dana Gould, but Leslie Phillips and Danny John Jules are Perfect for the character.

You could just alter the opening and have N. Tropy scheme against Uka Uka with Cortex and the game would've been the same with the 1996 final island being a cool callback to the first ever game

The Wrath Of Cortex was rushed to market. It was made in only a year, which is the same amount as Crash 2 & 3, but not only was it being made on new hardware, but Traveller's Tales were working on multiple projects, so there wasn't enough time or dedication to make the game as polished and well made as it could be.
Not the worst Crash game I've played, I'd take it over It's About Time, and the first two instalments are hard to go back to, but overall a very mediocre experience.
Dude no fucking way is Wrath of Cortex better than It's About Time. IAT sucks to 100% but playing it through normally is way more fun than WoC.

Wrath of Cortex was far more enjoyable to 100% AND to Platinum Relic the whole thing than "Its about time".
Levels dont overstay their welcome, no triple spin bullshit, just one type of sense of speed and no pointless padding, on top of artificial difficulty.
Its about time is only good as a casual playthrough to experience the story which would take you around few hours. Not worth it.
Hell, Caddy made me come back to Wrath of Cortex to beat my times, and honestly, it was fun.

Here's something Caddy doesn't know. When getting the Platinum Relic in Droid Void, you don't need to halt your momentum to shoot the nitro crates to get rid of them and the enemies. It's risky to jump around without taking the hit, but it is possible. Best yet, and this applies to all of the levels with the monkey bars, you can use the Death Tornado Spin to reach some of the platforms earlier than usual; allowing you to cut down on the slow climbing. Once I knew this stuff, beating these levels and getting the Platinum Relics became a much easier experience. Droid Void only took me a few tries, it was a cakewalk.
@@fictionalmediabully9830 Yeah im aware of that. When I was into doing insane times on time trials (in Crash 3 PAL) on console, I did the same technic in Hang'Em High that got me a sub 30 second time.
It took forever, but I grinded it and got it eventually.
Here as well, I used this trick in Droid Void, but not exactly in its full extent, as I personally dont have time nor being inspired to fully "maximize" the levels.
Also Gold Rush is a fine example too.
I have beaten my personal times that were few years old, so you gotta expect that I wasnt perfecting them at all haha XD
There is one exception however... and what you said, was most likely used, in the level Weathering Heights.
I somehow got 29:38 on it few years back. I couldnt beat it lol.

3:25:00 it bothers me that caddy doesn’t seem to know that cortex mutated AND mind controlled the bandicoots and his other soldiers from regular animals. That was the point of those scenes at the beginning of crash 1. I know he says he has a shit memory, but if he does then he shouldn’t talk like he actually remembers what’s going on in the story.
He did remember. He mentioned it on the first episode that "crash is just a failed copy of crunch" when talking with someone. I think he even mentions that the feral animals are used.
