  • "When The Sea Calls" is a film about what the ocean means to us, told through the introduction of 3 people who are drawn to it. 🧜🏼‍♀️
Filmed in 2012 in Clovelly, North Devon, England.
*Finally uploaded to CZcams in 2024 after music copyright restrictions were relaxed*
    We love you MOBY!
What is it that draws us to the sea?
Why might we find ourselves staring out into the blue?
Set in an idyllic fishing village on the North Devon coast, "When The Sea Calls" introduces the characters who might have the answers to these questions; a retired fisherman now ferrying tourists around the bay, a free spirited ocean swimmer who takes a dip every day come rain or shine AND a superstitious lobster fisherman from a long line of seafarers.
In a world filled with mostly bad news this feel good film explores another way of life.
Shot on a tiny budget, for the love of it. A camera, prime lenses (vintage glass), zoom h4n, a tripod & me, Ant.
    Canon 5D.
    28mm Olympus Zuiko
    50mm Pentax SMC Takumar

Wonderful video, I noticed the date of it is 2012.
I truly hope that the individuals portrayed are still with us.
The small villages and their inhabitants throughout the world could show us city folks what is important and what is not.

What a fantastic short film. As both a recreational boat fisherman and a lover of the Bristol Channel and North Devon Coast, it was fascinating to momentarily connect with the local way of life and their own deep connection with the sea.

It's very powerful, beautifully powerful! I decided not to become a full time fisherman, I did a spell as a shrimper in the Ribble estuary, amazing place, sailed, sculled used the fast flowing currents, then fave it up to become a full time potter and then gave thst up to tour the world as a performing pianist. I live the sea, now I swim in the sea all year round and Im in my sixties...tis a good Life!

About 1964 a mate & I slept in my mini-van in a dark carpark - in the morning looking over the edge we discovered Clovelly, way below, and scrambled down a path behind folk's gardens disturbing a few wakeful cats. You've brought back such memories. - Are the donkies still used on those steep cobbles?

Ha, what a story! Perhaps you were on the Hobby Drive. It is closed to regular traffic now. Yes, the donkeys are still there, but they are very much a tourist attraction only.

Great little film. My ancestors would have stopped off as Bristol Pilots for shelter and supplies in Clovelly although Ilfracombe was a favourite!
Listening to the fisherman about respecting the sea brings it home… My 3rd great grandfather was lost just around the bay off Ilfracombe in January 1849 with 3 other men. The village of Pill, Somerset which was home to the Bristol Pilots since 1497 lost many men and boys whilst seeking for ships in the Bristol Chanel. His pilot skiff was called the Echo and his name was James Cox. I’m heading down channel in the summer on my own boat from Pill so I’ll be sure to stop off weather permitting for a few jars in the pub. ⚓️🦈

@@Beachsidermud still here and is part of Pill and Seamills for that matter! Ferry closed when M5 bridge opened around 1973/4 after many centuries of taking people across the river! Pill is slowly losing its community spirit after hundreds of years thanks to all the outsiders moving in!
Something I never thought would happen 😢😢

    • @Beachsider
      @Beachsider Před 3 dny

@@PillSharks thanks for the update PS. I only crossed once, with my Dad, maybe about 1962. He wanted me to see it before it closed. I thought Pill would be doomed without the ferry, so I'm glad to hear it has survived. Of course Nowhere remains the same. Maybe it is 'incomers' keeping it alive - after all they could not move in without 'locals' moving out, unless new houses built.
We lived in a small village in Wales- we were disappointed that nobody taught us Welsh as they were nearly all Incomers themselves. Our youngest did keep the local Primary School open for another 2 years though, so not all bad. I did a lot of repairs on the old barn and grew organic vegetables. I started laying the hedges with permission from neighbours, and the owners. But when confronted by the reality of my success in clearing brambles and restoring the old pond, where he had failed, he threw us out !!
His children couldn't make a go of it so he finally sold it.
      😂 haha. What a tosser.
We finally emigrated to Ghana, my wife's home country.
So I'm retired on 2 Acres of beachside, with 100 Coconut trees to look after.
