  • @astorbeijer9424
    @astorbeijer9424 Před 10 měsíci +96

    The F91W is the best watch ever made. Why? It gave many millions of people all over the world the opportunity to know the time long before cell phones came along. The F91W was the printing press, the Ford model T, the lightbulb of the watch world.

    • @astorbeijer9424
      @astorbeijer9424 Před 10 měsíci +7

      @@BoazNGK Tell that to the average person in the global South who could never have afforded a watch until the F91W came along. It was the first watch that even the poorest person could afford if they saved up the money. That's why it's the best. It took the standardization of time, and everything that goes with that, meaning expectation to be on time, when to arrive and when to leave, etc. and it made these ideas accessible and the social expectations around time applicable to everyone in the world. Sure, Rolex is a good watch, but how many people in Uganda or Bolivia have Rolexes? How many of them have an F91W? Before the F91W, how many of them had watches?

    • @Muzly
      @Muzly Před 10 měsíci +3

      @@BoazNGK It definitely depends on your definition of "best".
      The F91W blasts every watch on the list in terms of accuracy. It's also value for money beyond the moon. It's iconic, gets respect from EVERYONE whether they are into watches or not, and is versatile.
      It was my first ever watch and if I was desperate, it would be the only watch I'd keep (since there is literally zero resale value).
      To say it's not even close is to do the Casio an disservice, and that's an understatement.

    G-shocks are pretty good tool watches. For 100 or so dollars you can get a solar model with multi band and that’s it, you don’t have to worry about charging it, getting it wet, banging it around or setting time for next twenty years. To be honest, most of thus could be said about most of regular Casio watches as well.

I also have had no real complaints with the Casio for a nice watch to wear at work. Or just around the house. One thing that I really look for is a Day/Date. I bought a Traser many years ago and it was great very accurate for me. Only drawback was I thought the face was a little too small for my use. I wish that I would have gotten it when my eyes were better. I can tell you without a doubt that the worst was a wind up with no second hand for my first watch. Also it's water resistant enough to have never leaked when I dunk it in solvents to clean it off and I've definitely tampered with it trying to do mods back in the day. It just won't break... Nice collab. Totally agree about Omega overcooking the "first watch on the moon" angle. It's a nice watch otherwise.

    To be fair I think Swatch deserves a shout here - not from a watch making perspective - but as an industry saving perspective - without Swatch there would barely be a watch industry now

    13:15 because some Chinese folks made aftermarket parts for 2100 G-Shocks, and they sold a fuck-ton of them.

    I can't believe you did not mention the real designer of the Royal Oak being Gerald Genta. He did more to salvage the mechanical watches from the ravages of the quartz craze than most. However, Genta was not a fan of the modifications that came later to his Royal Oak design.

      Gerald didn’t like all the crap they added to his design.

    From a functionality, innovation and functional design perspective, and for a product which has had and does still has huge impact both on the watch industry and culture it would have to be something Casio.

    Speedmaster is merely popular for marketing reasons since going to the moon is skipping a few steps. Like being the first watch in space; which would be far more significant... and that would be the Sturmanski that Gagarin wore and was based on a French LIP26. Just like the Speedmaster, you can still get homages and re-issues. In the 1940s graduating Russian pilots were gifted these watches at the Moscow flight School

    The best watch in the world is the watch your dad wore and left to you .
    After that I’m sure we’d leave this choice to be decided by Breguet , George D and FP Journe .

    If Seiko would have just put a screw down crown on the SRPD series, I would have been satisfied. But thankfully we have people like Mark from Long Island Watch who does the SKX style cases the right way.

    This competition was a bit contrived, of course, but fun none the less! The challenge lies in the word best! Best for what, and for whom? One of my parameters would have to be affordability, and “bang for the buck” because it makes the watch available to more people! That’s why I’m leaning more towards your first pick, the Seiko! I’d like to add my own two cents to the mix, and nominate the Tissot gentleman! It’s a watch for all seasons and all occasions, it’s got good spec, it’s affordable, handsome, and timeless and its design! You can wear it to the match, to the beach, or out to dinner, and never be over, or under dressed! Who could ask for more?

    Kind of a weird pick: for me the best watch ever made is the dive master chronograph from victornox.
    It's just spot on in terms of functionality.
