I purchased my Speedmaster because I believe it to be one of the best looking watches available. Aesthetically far easier on the eye than a Daytona, and I say that as a Rolex owner and an admirer of other watches in their catalogue. I love that my Speedie is a manual wind. For some unexplainable reason I have always enjoyed winding clocks and watches, maybe it's to do with the sound the ratchet makes. As I regularly rotate the watches in my collection I'm not to fussed about seventy hour power reserves either. I rarely wear the same watch for more than two days. Returning to aesthetics, I know they are there for a reason, but what spoils the Daytona for me personally, are those screw down pushers. They look so clunky.

Agree with you completely. Apart from the moon and space thing, I bought the watch because I love it (even before they told me it was the moon watch). Winding it is very satisfying and power reserve is kinda pointless when you have a collection of 3-4 watches or more. By the time you get back to the first it probably stopped even with the 72 hour power reserve.

I own two Daytonas and two speedys- a full steel and full gold of each. I think the Speedmaster is more interesting and purposeful in its design, the Daytona is definitely more rugged and sleek, with a much better bracelet. I love them both and I don’t understand this obsession with pitching Rolex against the rest of the watch industry… it’s like 80% of all videos on CZcams are ‘why this watch DEMOLISHES Rolex’

I miss my Speedy: in the late 1980s I was in the business if selling high-end audio gear, and had a customer who always had an interesting watch on his wrist, and noticed my interest (and a coworker's as well), and offered to sell us something from his collection. My coworker chose a vintage Croton chronograph with a delicious white enamel dial; I got a Speedmaster Pro dating from the late 70s. Price? A bit over $600, and I *knew* that was a crazy deal back then. Had I not lost it, I'd likely still have it, in spite of the insane windfall from selling it years later.

I totally agree. I don't know why but the Speedmaster looks really class and elegant. Something about the tiny details that elevates the watch. On top of looking great, the watch played a pivotal role in our human space flight conquest. The current Rolex Daytona looks like a bulkier and fatter version of the Speedmaster. I very much prefer the vintage Daytona with thinner tachymetre bezel. If the vintage proportions were still kept till today, then it would come down to the history between the two watches.

How I feel about Rolex Vs everybody is this.
I went to a high end open market/ restaurant in a very affluent area of cheshire in the UK last weekend. My first weekend with my sapphire sandwich.
Being a watch guy my eyes are constantly on wrists. Many guys wearing Rolex. But the vast majority of the guys wearing other watches, IWC, VC, Omega etc etc all acknowledged each other and I got in to a couple of conversations, even guys with VC overseas where complementing the Sapphire sandwich.
None of the Rolex guys seemed like watch enthusiasts, just guys who were wearing a Rolex.
The Speedy is a watch fans watch.

I have the old model Speedy 1863, super readable and accurate with a decent tactile chronograph action. I always smile when I look at it. If I'm in the waiting room at the dentist or the doctor's surgery when everything that you read in the room is at least twenty years old and you can't remember what you've just read anyway, my Speedy can save the day. I just take it off and look at that movement and before you know it I'm the next person to be summoned to the dreaded treatment room to experience things that I'd rather not. I can't comment on the Daytona as I don't have one but at least I have half of the story.

I know that if I wanted one today, I could just go to an AD and buy one straight off the shelf, or even some of the special editions (I've tried a few on the wrist in stores). That ain't happening at a Rolex store.

When I started, many years ago, to dive deeper into the Speedmaster collection I got so overwhelmed. If not confused. End of the previous century (sounds old) I obtained a Speedmaster Automatic Day Date in exchange for a dining table and a window type airconditioning unit (lived in the tropics at that point). A good deal as the table and aircon were given to me :-) Since then I love Omega. But there are so many versions of the Speedmaster. Why are the other models less popular and less expensive? They are more complicated I would say (automatic, day/date mechanism). One day I would like the original moonwatch version. It's the best. But first the MoonSwatch if available:-) Another marketing hype.

I just got my Omega SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful. I believe much better looking than the Daytona.

Think about it. And its not a lot of work, just watch a few videos and convert an old belt. Add some nylon in between the layers, glued, for strength, some calf skin for backing and punch your own holes. Do it well, take your time with it and glue it / mallet it well and sew it nicely and I shit you not it will look like a $300 strap and you will be ever so proud.

"The reality is that the brand bigwigs didn't even know a Speedmaster had been worn during a space mission - until they saw the pictures of it on astronaut Ed White's wrist..."
Untrue - NASA did not do their initial testing independently of the brands, "James Ragan, a former NASA engineer responsible for Apollo flight hardware testing, contradicted this story, calling it a "complete invention". Instead, bids were officially solicited of several brands already familiar to the pilots who were joining the growing astronaut corps."
Gus Grissom and John Young wore the first officially qualified Speedmasters into space in March of 1965 and Ed White was photographed with his officially qualified Speedmaster on the first Speedmaster-spacewalk later that summer. The Speedmaster that Omega didn't know about was on board one of the Mercury flights in 1962 worn by astronaut Wally Schirra in an unofficial capacity.
The Speedmaster is an unmitigated legend without propagating falsehoods about it's history.

I love my speedy. But I like the retro look of the hesalite better than the sapphire crystal featured here. The hesalite is rounded at the edges, sort of a bubble look to it, whereas the sapphire has an angular edge. The hesalite bracelet has brushing on all the links rather than polished tiny center links on the sapphire model - tiny detail but I like it fully brushed. For a watch with historical provenance like this I think the hesalite model, which was closer to the original, is the one to go for. You give up not being able to see the movement, but there’s cool engraving on the case-back and I think looks better from the the front. Either way though I agree that speedy crushes Daytona, and I’d choose Omega over Rolex even if Daytona were available at retail, and even if the retail price were the same.

The Electronic Timers on the Instrument Panel, which was used for various different time-keeping purposes (One of them was the event timer, which could be reset and started at any time. It was often used for shorter-term events or tasks when the crew needed to measure a specific duration rather than the total elapsed mission time.) had malfunctioned.
