Yeah this counter is pretty finicky. The opponent has to be in front of Seph, but they can't be literally hugging him for it to activate because they'll be behind the barrier.
Sephiroth's counter is so weird to me. It has things about it that make it one of the best counters, but then other aspects that make it unabashedly mid. Love the Kazuya reflector kill off of counter at 0.
It's technically his strongest, fastest, longest-lingering close-quarters option as long as an opponent attacks into it But what makes me mald the most is that some attacks like Chrom's up B spin seem to attack right through it unless you're positioned farther than it looks like you need to be, and I HATE that
Imo, it's Sora' counter that's the best. The simple fact that when it hits, it can stagger opponents destroys options like Banjo's Wonder Wing and Rock Kirby
2:05 Fun fact, if you ledge jump buffer a reflector it will come out almost twice as fast as neutral getup reflector, meaning you can just react to Seph's throw animation instead of trying to predict the ~flare throw. Any counter or reflector will come out almost twice as fast if you do this, letting you use counters as a cheeky, if dangerous, reversal on ledge.

If done correctly your character will appear on stage using their reflector before they actually ledge jump. If you go into training mode you can get it down pretty quick. You want to try all the charges in order to get a feel for how far they go, how long it takes for each to explode, and when you are locked into the throwing animation. Slow-mo is good for this. After about 5-15 minutes you'll have a pretty good handle on judging if Sephiroth has actually started the throw and if you have enough time or distance to reflector or use a different option.

The game plan from that Pyra kinda confused me, there was absolutely no use of mythra until the very end to recover. I noticed no use of her to poke or edgeguard or anything, which is what I do with her. The player was really solid tho.

bro phy yur a good seph player nd yu understand the char butchu dont understand his counter💀 heres a little advice man sephs counter is the only counter in the game that slows down on a physical attack PHYSICAL bro that means projectiles dont slow down the counter. it also doesnt have a counter activation hitbox from behind so if you ever try to land one from behind its clearly not going to work also phy every counter in the game isnt frame one so if you hesr the sound effect nd start to see scintilla it didnt come out yet cus i do believe it comes out frame 7 which is really good💀😭 its one of the best counters in the game if not THE BEST. it can kill characters at like 34 WITHOUT WING with wing is a whole notha story bro😭💀 yu gotta stop complainin about a counter if you dont kno how counters in smash work in general

Seph counter is kinda slow like all his other moves, I can see why some Sephiroths rarely use it it can sometimes just get you killed
It has solidly average startup compared to all counters in the game, the ones that are faster like Joker and Incineroar's are the weird outliers
Unlike other counters Sephiroth's counter has no intangibilty frames.
You might as well say all the FE characters counter's also suck then cuz Seph's is way better
