Now that cruising is getting back to normal I'm seeing the return of the annoying passengers. people who don't care how their behavior can ruin others vacations. here are my top 10 most annoying cruise passengers.

The Theater staff should shut the doors at the show start time and post a sign on those doors that advise "You're Late - please sit in the back."
Or "You are late. The doors will not be opened until the show is over."
@@kathieepler156 Sometimes unforseen circumstances happen that prevent people from being on time. They should not be locked out.
People can and should slip in and quietly sit down in the back.
Better yet: “Latecomers will NOT be seated.”
My idea is the floor at the front by the performers should be modified to shake and tilt giving the late-comers the sensation that the ship is sinking. That will freak them out and serve them right.
The most annoying people, to me, are parents who either don't understand that the word "parent" is also a verb or think that their responsibility for their offspring ends when they board a ship. We watch as the kids roam the ships in "packs" or trash beverage stations, crash "adult only," etc. And you nailed it with the others. My hero is a man who looked at 2 teenagers who had almost knocked down a woman using a walker as they rushed to get into an elevator. The man saw it happen, and ordered the boys to "get out." They didn't move, so he followed up with "You can walk the stairs, she can't. I saw what you did. Get out." And he held the elevator until they exited and she got on!
Perhaps cruise lines should have a policy of "no admittance after show has started."
We went to the buffet, and a child of maybe 5/6 was happily climbing on the shelf in front of the dessert counter…… while Mom just stood and watched!

@@christinap3825 That's why I've changed to an "adult only" line. We've long been cruising primarily when school was in session to avoid the kid crowds, but a ship that doesn't allow them is even better.

Elevator rushers are the worst!! I was on a cruise with my sister who had mobility issues and used a scooter. Everyone rushed in front on her not allowing her to enter. She had to literally act like she was going to run people over to get on. Or the group of us had to block the way from the rushers so that she could get on the elevator. This is what we had to do after waiting 20 plus minutes for the elevator. I think maybe cruise lines should have a separate elevator for people in wheelchairs and scooters. Because people are so rude.
This isn’t considered rude in India or China. In India they don’t do line ups either- it isn’t a thing. Why do you enter an international ship and expect North American rules? You realize things you do are rude to others and you don’t even know it? Don’t go on vacation with international people if you expect everyone to have your same cultural norms. YOUR way isn’t the right way and THEIR way isn’t the wrong way.

Agree with you, Don. There is little to no respect for other people these days. It should be taught in school, but there's no respect for teachers. There's no respect for parents anymore. Thoughtfulness is a dirty word to so many. Parental control is a thing of the past for many families, these days. Cruising should be a time of total relaxation and enjoyment. We don't need these annoying cruise passengers. I just hope these people will listen to what you said today. I somehow doubt it, but thanks for trying to educate the population.
Respect should be taught at HOME, too late by the time they get to school. Continued everywhere including schools but schools can’t be responsible for everything 🤓
Yes, yes, yes… all my every pet peeves! I do ask the “talkers” in a show to please save their conversation for later and explain the obvious that we are here to enjoy the show, not listen to your conversation. I get head nods from others who appreciate me speaking up.
The head nodders are simps because they are too wimpish to say anything.
You covered it 110% and thank you for covering it. I am bold enough to speak up and tell someone to please stop talking during a show and have even said aloud to someone in a buffet line to "Please stop touching the food with your hands" and then I go to tell a staffer to remove it. Who knows who washes their hands and when....It's disgusting and disrespectful to everyone. I can add one other type that annoys the hell out of me and that's the person who walks off and just leaves a huge mess at their table in the Windjammer. If you spill ketchup, use a napkin and clean it off the table....If you have 20 plates of food and only eat a portion, PLEASE take all you want but eat what you take......Thank you, Don for the best tips ever. My dream is to run into you onboard Royal Caribbean sometime. I have a hug for you ! We appreciate your videos !

Yes, touching the food really gets on my nerves. It is very unsanitary and people should know better.
I’d heard about people who do disgusting things in the buffet. I thought it was a bit overblown but I was proven wrong on my first cruise last April. A man in front of me dropped the tongs on the floor. He picked them up, looked around as if he wasn’t sure what to do, and then placed them back on the buffet - not in the food, thank goodness - and carried on. There was an attendant standing right there who didn’t see it happen so I picked up said tongs and told him they had been dropped on the floor. I don’t know if the guilty party heard me do it and I don’t really care. What kind of fool would do that?
Unfortunately, the people who should watch this won't see it and if they do, they won't recognize themselves.
I wholeheartedly agree with you about the buffet. I was on the Symphony of the Seas in July and at the buffet there was a lady that had to fondle the rims of the glasses of water before she picked up one. Of course she didn't take any of the glasses she fondled. I wish they would go back to crew service or at least overseeing.

of your points 100%. All of those things happen to us on every cruise, so annoying. I can’t understand why people go to the show if they want to talk and they spoil the show for everyone. The elevators too should be first at the elevator get in, but people will run past as we are waiting for the elevator and people rush past us. Are we invisible?
If they don’t want late comers why don’t they close the doors when the show starts? In India no matter how young or old you push up to an open space as fast as possible- they don’t have a line up as a concept in India. Many places in the world don’t know the concept of a Q. Why on an international ship filled with different cultures is it YOUR norms we follow? You can’t fault someone for not knowing something? You will be the moron getting mad while you are trying to get on a city bus (that doesn’t stop for you to get on) in India and you’ll think there is some sort of line but there isn’t so as the bus approaches you will be shocked at all the “old lady” elbows hitting you and basically pushing you out of your spot. YOU have no right to bitch- this isn’t your cultural norm but it is correct in India! You went THERE!
I was on a European cruise during the US invasion of Iraq. An Italian guy kept shouting f..k Bush.
Don- Just a thought: Why not suggest to the cruise lines to put a paper copy of “Proper Cruise Etiquette” on the desk of every cabin at the start of each cruise? Reinforce the major topics with a placard on the inside of each cabin door. Here is a hint on latecomers to a show: Announce beforehand that latecomers will not be allowed into the theater and put locks on the doors so only cruisers inside will be able to exit. They might need to place a crew member nearby to re-admit someone who needed to use the rest rooms. I think what has happened was during the shut down, some of the more dense people have forgotten proper cruisers etiquette and need a refresher.
It is the responsibility of the Cruise Lines to place "Do Not Touch Food" signage in the buffet area. The staff see this but say nothing for fear of complaints being made against them.
OMG I almost blew a gasket on my last cruise. There were so many people who would come in late, bother people who were watching by trying to find seats but would also leave after a few minutes. This happened almost entirely throughout the show. So disrespectful!
Yep. People would come and just stand in the aisle; the show already going. Infuriating.
Can I say this without taking one bit of responsibility away from the people who do this? This behavior (arriving late and talking during shows) is absolutely controllable by ship's crew. If it wasn't allowed, it wouldn't happen (people physically not allowed late in the theatre and people being removed by staff if they disrupt the show). I know, I know - ship's staff SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS. But since passengers won't behave, it shows respect to the OTHER, behaving passengers, for the crew to require latecomers and loud passengers to wait outside. I know it's hard for crew to do, but as I said, it shows respect for those who are doing it right. BTW this goes for families with misbehaving children, as well.

Nodding my head 'yes' throughout this great video. Not just elevator rushers. Add in tenders, tour busses, everything. Some people just have to rush. I stand my ground, and will ask, "please wait until we get off". Our last Apex cruise had only 6 children under 18 years old. Lucky us, we had the one parent and small boy that fit your description. The little boy was tired, bored, just being a small boy. The dad was asked if he could talk to his son. The dad stands up and announces to the entire tour bus that this other guy was being unreasonable and if we saw him on the ship we should tell him to mind his own business. Upon leaving the bus, I explained to the dad that there was only one unreasonable ass on the bus, and that man was him. I will never make a scene, but I will call out an idiot when encountered.
I agree with you Don on all of these but unfortunately these people will never change until there are some substantial consequences.
Why do people boarding an international ship have to change to YOUR norms? Maybe change your norms so you are seen as polite to THEM?
@Patriotic Duty but manners are cultural. YOUR manners are not a worldwide concept and when YOU are around other cultures YOU have no manners sometimes and you don’t even realize it. How do you not understand North American manner norms are not the same outside of North America?!! And WHY do North American manner norms have to be followed on an international ship full of different cultures?!!

How about some specific examples of North Americans behaving rudely on cruise ships with a truly international group of passengers. Tell us the cruise line, the ship, where and when it was cruising, and what the cultural mix was. And what happened.

Most annoying thing was the swingers taking over the bars at night. Second,the packs of kids causing mischief all over, third was the pot smokers, finally the cold food served night after night.
Whenever I get the urge to go to Disney or book a cruise, I do a shopping run to Costco. By the time I'm done, I have reaffirmed I have no interest in spending any more time with the average Jane or Joe. Manners are dead. Apprehension of the physical world is gone. People are largely rude and clueless. No thank you. I was in Vegas last month. We were awoken up by the fellow across the hall. He had a do-not-disturb tag on his door. He didn't want to wake up his companion at six in the morning, so he stepped into the hall to make his cell call, and woke up everyone within earshot. (Bathroom maybe? Duh)
I love the elevator rushers. I'm 6'4" 250 pounds. I just stop. Not enough room to get around me, hmm? Maybe get out of the way? I will stand and look at them and wait for them to get out of the way. IF I've had my second or third cocktail, I "may" comment on common courtesy of waiting until people are out before they enter.
On our first cruise we were seated with experienced cruisers and all they did was complain about the cruise during the whole dinner service and it was every evening. The last night it was about our servers who were absolutely wonderful and did everything within their power to make this couple happy to no avail. If we had based repeat cruising on everything this couple said we would have never returned but 38 cruises later we still have never had a complaint.
Don I agree with all of your points. I find it funny that when cruising was at lower capacity none of these things happened. At least not on the 4 cruises I was on. You forgot the Dech Chair hogs.
Yes, the deck chair hogs!! With full capacities now however, hard to tell. Very disheartening though. We refuse to rush up at 7am to throw a towel on a lounge though. Once locked out, locked out for the entire day usually. And how about hot tub edge sitters?

I agree with your list but would add a small bit with the smokers. I just quit smoking August 1st but when I did it was frustrating when I would go to the limited smoking section just to find half the seats are taken up by families with children who don't smoke but this is the only place for me to smoke.

Don…..my late husband and I went on many cruises. We endured/suffered all of your “beefs” about inconsiderate fellow cruisers. This will sound “snooty”. But we found if we booked on the smaller probably more costly cruise lines….that manners were universal with the fellow passengers. I guess it boils down to…..if you get a cut-rate on cruise on a “bargain” cruise line…..you should just be prepared to deal with all the folks who are just unaware of politeness and how to act???

Correct. Viking doesn't allow kids,, no casinos and no displays of corpulence in the centrum. We like to travel a lot so our compromise is Celebrity, not as nice as Viking but ok.

I have seen so many bad vibes about Viking…..but I am appreciative of your description of their ship rules and regs. I will have another look. Have taken a Celebrity cruise……but that was several years ago.
Don, you must have read my review of our recent cruise. The only issues we had regarded passenger behavior. Line cutters at the buffet, "I only want a few things so I should not have to stay on line"; door slammers the entire 9 day cruise, on one day I counted 40 slams in less than 3 hours!; not controlling their children, trying to watch a movie 6 kids kept running back and forth in front of us; hot tub loud partiers on deck tubs not at the pool, On day 4 they had to empty the hot tub and wash it down.
That is why cruising is the cheapest form of vacation. You get what you pay for.
Never travel to South America if screaming kids bothers you. You will be the only one in the restaurant bothered by it there. Children and all their noise and hurricaness doesn’t bother South Americans. They don’t even notice. So you will sit there outside of your culture and bitch alone. Do you know cultural politeness norms in other areas of the world outside North America? The concept of a line up doesn’t exist in India- it doesn’t matter if you are young or old- you PUSH. It’s not rude there- it’s normal. Why are they wrong and you right? Ignorance.

This a great list and should be posted in every cabin! Run away kids are very annoying, especially if I had left my kids at home to have a nice quiet few days alone with my husband! Why doesn’t the ship security team monitor these infractions? Walk up to people who touch food and remind them not to touch. Annoying people in the game shows and theater should be removed PERIOD! Why should one person have the right to have their fun at the expense of 100 plus other people?

Somehow, people have lost the basics of politeness.
You forgot the a$$ lounge savers that get up before dawn to put a book, an old shoe, etc to save "their" lounge chairs. I wish all ships/resorts/etc would have security empty the chairs after 30 minutes. Simple, put the security notice on chair, if when they come around in 30 minutes, and it hasn't moved. Clean off the chair. Let people go to lost and found to get their crap.
Interesting suggestion. Make it an hour and I would agree with you. Some of us actually go to the pool to swim. I have been in the water for more than 30 minutes at a time. And I like to sit on the lounger for a while to dry off some. I would be just as happy to sit in an upright chair to do that.
I think you have nailed them all Don! Couldn't agree with you more! Talkers and smokers on the balcony/noisy neighbors are at the top of our list.
On Royal Caribbean you have to book the show. If you are not there fifteen minutes after it started, you lose your seat and they give it to others that are just waiting to be seated. No one is allowed to go in after it started. It’s very rude to be late. If you attend a Broadway show or an opera, you are not allowed if you are late. The talkers are the worst too because they do not enjoy the show but do not allow others to enjoy it too.
Oh my goodness - I completely agree with your point about slamming doors. It always surprises me when people don’t realise their balcony door being open will impact your ability to open the cabin door - so annoying!

Don’t ever travel to Brazil then. Children run around restaurants and visit other tables of strangers and the stranger interact with them. Children are revered in Brazil. The entire village helps raise the child and they are never ever considered annoying or rude. Why do you board an international ship and expect the rules are North American standards? Just because it’s rude in your country doesn’t make it rude in other countries. Why are YOUR rules so special?
@@allytrudie864 Children running around and children "running wild" are 2 different things. A child running wild pays no attention to others, runs into people and things knocking them over, harasses others, screams at the top of their voice constantly and deliberately, etc. None of which is appropriate behavior.
I myself interact with children in restaurants occasionally. And they aren't running wild.
You are right on every single point, Don! The habitual complainers probably display the same annoying behavior in their every day lives. And isn’t there an officer/ head usher to report the “unruly kids” and “loud conversationalists” to? That stuff would never be tolerated on Broadway!!!

I have to agree 100% with Don and add a few more annoying people to the list: people who put towels on chairs by the pool so others cannot use them. In tandem with the chair-hogs are the signs that report towels will be removed from unattended chairs but that never happens. You have to add people who fight / yell (at guests or staff) to this list. At the time of writing this comment, I have not witnessed this issue on a cruise but I have seen it multiple times in airports and hotels.
Food hogs. Was standing at the buffet once waiting for a couple of chicken wings...brand new batch came out...she took every last one. Turned to those waiting and said. "They will refill it shortly"....ironically we were sitting next to her in the buffet...she ate several but left tons to be thrown out. Just mind blowing to me
I have mobility issues and use a scooter. I had no issues on my last cruise with elevators. All were most considerate and if elevator was full I let folks know I was getting off, all on front of me departed the elevators stepped aside and held the door so they could get back on. Even the kids were respectful. Well done parents! It was Royal Caribbean Liberty of the seas out of Galveston August 21st sailing. Seemed to be near full capacity.

Sounds like it’s time to bring back Miss Manners. . We unfortunately have an epidemic of entitlement. Unfortunately it’s the cruise employees that need to correct this because of the anger element that happens when one passenger corrects another . We board for the first time tomorrow. So excited 😆

Hi Don, you're looking great! I took a once in a lifetime excursion to the Panama canal. Some people had a couple of children. Little girl maybe 2 years old. She screamed and cried all the way through the locks. Never stopped. They took her inside, they brought her back outside. They took her in the bathroom. Nothing worked. Just ruined the excursion for everyone.
Speaking of Alaska. When u were in Whittier did you take the little walking tunnel to the resident’s side. When u leave the ship and walk down to the boat launch ramp. Walk across the parking lot from the boat ramp. You will see a path that leads to the tunnel. Once thru the tunnel walk down a block to the grocery store. The museum. And the hotel and restaurant. It’s cool.

You comment about people rushing to get on the elevator is a pet peeve I have here in San Francisco ridding the local bus. People can’t wait 5 seconds to see if anyone is getting off like the bus might leave without them. Plus you have people blocking the rear door so it’s difficult to get either on or off. Yes people coming to the show late & looking for seats. I’ll be on the Discovery Princess next month for the Love Boat Cruise & will be interested to see what happens with the shows. Great video. I was on one cruise where they had little toddlers dancing on the dance floor and nobody else could. You almost wanted to knock them over. If you aren't going to watch your kids leave them home
My pet peeve is the people who put towels on the lounges at 5:00 AM to reserve them, until they actually want to use them at 3:00 in the afternoon!
If after 30 min a towel is still there I have no problem putting it in the dirty bin.
Last time on the Vista, I had a cabin neighbor who would always place their used food trays and dishes at my door on the floor; like they didn’t have a door to set their things in front of. As a person who never leaves food trays in the hallway, this was so frustrating. I’m still looking for a creative and clever way to address this if it happens again on a future cruise.

My pet peeve are the parents that bring their kids to the adult only area, e.g. RC solarium. I spent many cruises at the kids pool when my kids were younger.
Totally agree about all 10 especially the buffet food gropers and the feral children. But to add a sidebar to the comments about the few folks that are so self important about boarding the elevators, I have so many fond memories of brief cruise ship elevator conversations. The vast majority of cruisers are pleasant kindred souls having quite literally the times of their lives. Love your videos, stay healthy.
Great video! We were on a Celebrity cruise from Australia to New Zealand in 2019 and I watched one lady, (not a small lady), go to the dessert table and take all the fancy chocolate decorations off every cake displayed. She filled her plate. (On that ship they had the cakes displayed whole, so you had to slice your own piece, which I didn't like, because they were mostly light sponge and were difficult to cut. Much better to have the staff set them out on single plates.) But I just couldn't believe what that lady was doing. So pathetic and sad.
You made me laugh, when you talked about people touching the food. 🤮. But you are right. What’s anoying me the most are people who are searching for friends. I mean, when I travel with my husband, We sometimes want to have time to ourselves. Don’t get me wrong. We love to chat with other passengers but if you talk to somebody and you see that they don’t go on with the conversation please, understand that maybe, just maybe, they would like to be left alone. I was on a cruise a few years ago, right after my mom had passed and I didn’t feel like making new friends. I was there to rest and relax after that hard time. You never know why people are on the cruise so be respectful of their privacy.
What you are saying is the absolute truth and it’s reflective of the degrading caliber of human beings we are all dealing with. They are the same people we are dealing with everywhere across the planet and the nightmares they have created all across the globe. They just aren’t smart enough to step out of their own prison so they try hard to pull the rest of us into their HELL.

Good list. We had an instance of 2 of your annoying people combined, hammered and making a lot of noise in the hallway. Before drink packages were a thing. It was the last night of a cruise to the Western Caribbean during spring break. Everybody had their luggage out in the halls. All the drunk people came back to their rooms at around 3:00AM stumbling and tripping over all the bags making a racket. At least karma caught up with them the next morning when their bar bill arrived and you see them in the lobby making frantic phone calls to their parents for more money to pay their bill before leaving the ship.
We were on Sky Princess last year and had smokers on the balconies below ours, we were eventually told that it was isolating crew members. We pointed out about Star Princess's fire and we were told because they were in isolation and could not leave their cabins they were allowed to smoke on the balconies.
We fully agree with you regarding the late comers in the theatre, badly behaved children and excessive drinking. This should be controlled by the cruise company, by shutting the theatre doors once the show has started, speaking to the parents and stop serving passengers who are obviously intoxicated, they have security they should use it, but the crew have told us they won't do it for fear of being accused of spoiling someone's holiday, but no regard for the majority.
Number 1-so true. People that try to rush into the elevator, I tell them “Maybe there would be more room I I got off first. They just don’t get it.

All the things you complained about I agree ! People can be so annoying and rude!

Don’t forget the chair hogs near the pool and in the showroom! Particularly on Princess!
I was on Disney Fantasy this summer, the last night of cruise during the Believe show a couple in their 50s-60s sat behind us and sang the entire show loud and off key to the point I couldn't even hear the performers.
I have seen a mom and grandma talking at the edge of the pool forgetting to pay attention to their kiddo’s . I did go up to them and “ remind them” to observe their little ones. Not well received but I felt better.
Sorry we missed the Royal! We were a week behind you on the Radiance of the Seas. On day 5 my wife and I went to the Windjammer for breakfast and because of all the early excursions were pretty busy. Almost every table was in use. I noticed 2 round tables and been moved together and that only 2 people were sitting at them, so I asked and they said their party was getting their food. (They had finished their breakfast.) I walked away and another guest told me that they had been there for over 30 minutes and turned many people away. I told a waiter what was going on and went back and sat at the 2nd table. My wife and I took about 30 minutes to eat, drink our coffee, and depart. Their party still hadn't showed up when we left and a supervisor moved the table back to its original location. The "lady" yelled out that I was the rudest person she had ever met.
I totally agree with your on all this Don ! And people wonder why I hate so many people 🤣🤣
Hi Don. Thank you so much for pointing out these common curtesies for cruising or life itself. We’ve been cruising since 2007 , just on Carnival and have not had many bad experiences like you point out on other cruise lines. Maybe one or two folks that have showed up for a production but not like you’ve pointed out. Think we’ll stick with CCL :-)
They should keep the buffets being served by the cruise staff!
Yup - people refusing to wash hands - especially entering the dining areas . And please - no empty Purell containers!

Hotel room doors are the same way, it slams if not controlled. I always grab the door and "guide" it until it clicks shut, no need to let it slam, but sometimes I hear neighboring doors slamming on the floor I am staying.
Geeze Louise, lol. Great info video as always. Will definitely put whispering in hallway & not letting doors slam on my list for my first future cruise.
Just got back from Alaska on Ovation ots. We had exactly the same thing. We had Star class and everyone wanted to know about Star class while we were in the theater. Got to the point you didn't want anyone to know you were Star class.
People who stop to chat in an area and end up blocking the whole area for anyone to walk through or people that do an abrupt stop right in front of you.

👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 you tell them Don! That goes for anywhere, not just a cruise. It happens everywhere. I have seen at the movies, this lady kept getting phone calls during the movie, and at first we think she’s telling them, hey I’m at the movies I’ll call you later. But NO! She’s talking loud as can be, just chit chatting on the phone. My cousin used to work at the theaters and she jumps up and yells “Hey lady! We came here to watch a movie, not listen to you talk on the phone. So go outside with that nonsense.” Ohhh if looks could kill, that lady gave a mean glare at my cousin, but the rest of the theater was actually clapping and telling my cousin, YES! Thank you!
Shouldn't the cruise line control access to the shows insisting on timeliness? And there should be ushers to keep passengers quiet.
Apologies for all the door slams but until the cruise lines install automatic door open/close on accessible cabins, it's going to be a bit noisy. There is no way to get the wheelchair or scooter in and hold the door!
That’s correct. I agree with you. I think Don refers to the people that purposely let the door go and do not hold it. If you are on a wheelchair or scooter, you are not able to grab the door unless you have a roommate and they hold it.😁
I DON'T understand why don't ALL the Cruise liners install SOFT, QUIET closing main doors & balcony doors. It cant cost that much to install they charge up EACH enough money to sail with them
I call people out on this stuff and embarrass them
