    A lot of people like the smaller ships including me and my wife. My favorite ship on any cruise line is Enchantment of the Seas. Having a modern small ship would be amazing! We’ve talked about this for awhile now. I’m glad it is on the agenda.

      You don’t like cruising then obviously, you just like the ports and the ships are a much more comfortable way to get there than planes. If you liked cruising and partying you would appreciate the large ships and how far they have come

    That is great news RCL has finally realized that it's time to roll out some smaller ships that go to other ports, and also to cater to the loyal passengers who do prefer the ambiance if being on a smaller ship but with newer amenities. So happy to hear this. Thank you Don for sharing this news with us. Happy New Year to you !

    I would love to see some smaller ships being built. Perhaps a few that could sail out of Tampa. You know we have the limitation of the Skyway Bridge, so large ships are not an option. Consequently, we only have some of the oldest ships in the fleets, and most of them need extensive work. It would be nice to have at least one or two modern options.

    Just got off our first voyager class ship.. the Navigator of the Seas and it’s got a lot of charm at a great price point. Don, let’s not forget that a lot of people view the ship as a destination and simply want to get away. We’ve done Cozumel and Costa Maya so many times, it doesn’t matter to us. Don, I am thrilled to hear this news. I don’t need to be on the biggest ship in the world. I just need a ship that has good service, good food, good entertainment (not necessarily a HUGE Broadway production) and some pool space. I really nice ship that is smaller appeals to me. A smaller ship isn’t where families will want to go, it might attract an older crowd, with more educational lecture opportunities and smaller ports. Can’t wait to book a new “small” RCI ship!!!!

  • @anakerose
    @anakerose Před 8 měsíci +6

    The smaller cruise ships may be more expensive to run, but they're favourites for a reason. The cruise lines are shooting themselves in the foot going bigger. Alaska cruises will be a distant memory if they don't stop with these mega ships. The ones going there now are already too big. Good luck seeing any of these mega ships on the west coast. The Panorama proved that there is an issue with emergency repairs with the only dry dock in Portland.

    Don, you are absolutely correct! Wife and I are higher level (perks) with Royal and are totally burnt out in the Caribbean and the Large and Larger ships from them. So we have switched to Princess for our 2 next cruises on Royal Princess to Alaska. We have not cruised with Princess since 2014 but now we are looking to cruise new or great cruise ports like Alaska and no more "Bus Routes". This will be our 3rd and 4th cruise to Alaska but never on Princess. Thanks Don for what you do!

  • @cydneystephen2814

    You’re right Don. All these mega ships limit ports. But I would just stay on and enjoy a less grounded ship. That is exactly what they should do; build new smaller ships like 3000 passengers. Great idea. 💡

    There is a group of us that have been advocating to Michael Bailey about our need for a new smaller ship instead of refurbishing the old ones. It was a discusion on the President cruise last July, during a top tier talk event. Its not because of needing to go smaller ports because they are doing that with mall ships. Its about what us Loyal2Royal have been asking for.

    Actually enjoy the oasis class now and then but when you get right down to it the 2500 to 3500 passenger ships are my favorite! The radiance class was one of our best cruises ever! Actually they might think of taking one of their older ships and spending half the money of a new ship build and just redo one of the older ships including the power plant! Caribbean Princess is a great old ship as is Mariner and Brilliance of the seas.

    However I do also like the medium sized ships like Holland America has. They are more intimate, more traditional and can access ports the huge ships can not get into. So I think it's good news that Royal is looking at some smaller options. It will be interesting to see what they include on them, will they just revert back to the traditional style or will they have some of the features that you only see on Royal.

    Don just hoped of the Royal Princess doing back to back cruises,what a disappointment. Much larger than the ships I’m use to Corral Sea and the Island . More guests for revenue but the cafe is the same size Wheehouse Bar is smaller and no dance floor. With more guests means harder to find a table and if you do you can’t have a conversation because all the noise from the atrium, my party off 6 2 have canceled our next cruise and we are all looking for another more friendly cruise line. We are all long time cruisers with Princess all having done over 20 plus cruise.

  • @jfmezei
    @jfmezei Před 8 měsíci +1

    I would think that crew/passenger ratio as well as the ship's capacity er passengers would matter more than ship size. A ship that has too many passenger for its tender capacity will make transfer longer and mroe tedious than one that has tender capacity that better matches the number of passengers. Same with dining room and various activities/entertainment. Where larger ships have an advantage is the daytie activities such as go kart, water slides and other amusement park type of activities only pssible on the larger ships.
    If cruise line has a terminal capable of habdling the largest ship, but you travel on a small ship, you may find that terminal and embarquation/disembarquation far more pleasant and efficient since that ship doesn't come close to overloading the port faciities.
    One last thing: a smaller ship going to less frequented ports means you're not lost in a sea of tourists in a port of call and can better experience the city you are visiting. If there is only one small ship docked in Skagway, your experience in town will be vastly different than the current trend of having 4-5 mega ships all docked at same time and the tourist populations 4 times the size of local population which turns the town into an theme park attraction.

    First of all, what do they mean by "smaller" ships? The Quantum class is 4k+, the Freedom class is 3k+, and the Vision class is 2k+ in terms of capacity. Freedom class ships are still darn LARGE, nowhere near Oasis and Icon class ships, but large in their own right. I suspect they will never build ships smaller than one that would accommodate 3k passengers. Will this satisfy those who are asking for SMALLER SHIPS? I say it will NOT! That's not what those looking for smaller ships are asking for. They want ships under 2k passengers and I don't think that is going to happen.
