- Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

In this week’s episode we cover:
1. I would like to cast on for your Birch pullover. When checking the half fisherman's rib instructions I realized there is much more purling than knitting (if I am not mistaken :-). Do you think it is a good idea to knit the pullover wrong side out to knit more than purl?

2. I am currently starting your sweater pattern LYS. I have decided to make it a bit larger because I would be happier with a bit more ease. The pattern calls for -2 to +2 inches of ease. That will be +4 inches of ease for me. My question is: What do I do for the sleeves? I usually go up one needle size for sleeves on a sweater pattern but should I do that for this pattern? Since the body is knit flat, will my gauge change for the sleeves? I think so. But since I am making it with more ease than you recommend, will the sleeves be already larger?

3. I started the Big Cozy Sweater during the March to May KAL and am determined to wear it this winter. I am using an upcycled alpaca blend (from Knit Picks) that is 33% alpaca, 34% Wool and 33% acrylic. I made a 6 inch blocked swatch and achieved gauge. I just finished and blocked the body and to my horror it was 6 inches too wide. I tried squishing it to size when I pinned it out to dry, but this was the best I could do. I can't bear to tear it out and start again and I'm sure that if I stuck with the current measurements it would move from "cozy" to "sloppy". I decided to fold in each side by 3 inches and do the mattress stitch on the folded seams. I will use my sewing machine to reinforce the knitting and then cut off the extra, but I'm curious to know what other options would have been.

4. I am excited to join in on the Totally Tessellated KAL and have been working on my swatch in the round. I'm loving the addictive pattern so much! I using the magic loop method and having a problem with the color changes when we slip the first two stitches on rounds 5 & 6. I seem to be pulling the yarn too tight when I transition to my main color in round 1 after completing 5 & 6 because I'm not seeing my main color between row 6 and 1. My beginning of round just looks like a mess of tight blocks of color C. Any tips on how to maintain proper tension when changing colors at the beginning of the round? The rest of my sock swatch looks great, it's just the beginning of the round that looks like a hot mess.

5. I was curious as to how you choose the order for colors in general and more specifically the shift cowl. I chose Melancholia, Nostalgia, and Wololo. Melancholia (blue green with pops of burgundy) and Nostalgia (burgundy and pink with pops of blue green) share the same colors and Wololo (brown, orange, pinks and burgundy, turquoise) has little pops of similar colors but is different from the other two. Melancholia is my favorite out of the three. Maybe I should put Wololo in the middle to break up Melancholia and Nostolgia? I'd love to hear how you decide your order for your colors.

Lol I can’t tell you how many weeks I see that your video is available and that’s the minute I realize it’s Friday lol Thanks!
A tip for the totally tessellated BOR problem! I found that when I moved my magic loop so that the BOR is in the middle of one needle, that problem got much better. I didn't have that problem of rows 5 and 6 pulling in the Tessellated vest, which was not magic loop, so I moved my needles so that the loops stick out at stitches 16 and 48 of the round (for the 64-st sock), rather than sts 0 and 32.
I come here for the knit chat, but what I enjoy the most every time are the improvised musical interludes. Very high entertainment value, Andrea! Thank you so, so much for the joy you bring!
Good morning! Hope yall had a great thanksgiving and the kiddos in the background are welcome noises ❤
You need to get a BLUNT umbrella. Living in NZ we get a lot of wind/rain and I’ve had the same umbrella about 8 years now. It never turns inside out. Hope they sell them in the states.
OMG!!! I can actually see how useful the “Spinners Delight” can be!!! I have never used a spindle but this tool makes me want to get one right away!!! Thank you for sharing!!
Such a good tip taking pictures of yarn combinations in b/w to see the contrast! Wish I’d done that for my night shift shawl. Ah well. I’ll have to make a second one!
Negative ease = stretch, while positive ease = bagginess. (Linguistically, and for me, personally, 'ease' pertains to bagginess, and 'stretch' is stretch). Hope this helps :)
I found Rolags so much better to spin on a Spindle. I don't particularly like to spin them on a wheel so it works out well.
😂 Is it weird I sympathize for purling every time I hear someone want to avoid it?!?!? Poor purl stitch has such a bad rep, I love you baby! And your cousins seaming and knitting flat too! 😂
LOL! I ripped out my tessellated socks last night and have to cast on again (now Saturday--they were too big), so it is a good thing I never planned to get them done by Monday. I do love the pattern and will be using up lots of leftover bits from solid socks with this pattern.
I've had the LYS all ready to start. But it is in such a "special" category that I wait. Wait for what? Wait for just the right "special" time to start? lol I'm taking this as my sign to cast on! Love this episode!
Thanks so much for answering my question about color orders. ❤ I used your suggestion of taking a photo and using the black and white option, it was so helpful! I appreciated your thoughts on the topic, I love discussing color pairings and all of that.
For the too large sweater, before cutting into it, I would re wash and then throw in the dryer first, just check on it every 4 minutes, that’s what I would try first😊
Working on the sock challenge this morning and listening to another great episode! Happy knitting everyone!
Some of us are pretty hardy😂😂😂 this made me laugh so hard. A polite way of saying some of us don't mind rustic wool right on our nips.
You crack me up
I love hearing your kiddos!
great episode! So, I've started the socks, but wow! It is taking me forever. Maybe I'm not the the right headspace. The spinning challenge...,fantastic. I have always wanted to spin (and weave!). So I signed up the the Knit Stars class for spinning from last year? Which I have not look at. So this will give me a kick to start. You designed are very diverse and I'm always being challenged with new techniques. That spinel delight is great, especially with cats who are curious.
To the person who asked about working the birch pullover and the purling, I would suggest trying out purling Portuguese style. It’s fairly easy to learn
Always fun. like the spinning KAl.
Thinking through the half-fisherman/Birch in the round; knitting inside out wouldn’t really solve the issue because only when knitting back and forth for half fisherman do you get to knit the ‘wrong’ side row, because you rely on the line of purl bumps to keep the purl column, correct? Is my brain just thinking about it incorrectly? This whole question made me realize how much of a visual/active learner I am!
Thx for all the details that you give.
Great questions and great answers !
I’m currently knitting a LYS ❤
Interested in spinning thanks to a few people like you that dabble in that craft. Who should I follow on CZcams to learn? Also who should I go to for a drop spindle?
Watch the video “Improved knitting in the round” with Phranco. It’s a game changer for that tension issue!
I started watching this during the morning and I was just finishing it while I was brushing my teeth before bed and I kept wondering why my child was still awake AND awake enough to whoop in glee and then I realized it was your children and breathed a big sigh of relief when I realized I could in fact, just crawl into bed 😂
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support! ❤️❤️❤️
Andrea, I'm concerned about your advice to the woman with the too-wide sweater. If she takes off 6" at one side, but not the other, that will affect how the sleeves fit. One sleeve will become super long. She's correct that she needs to remove it from each seam equally.
Hi there! With the construction of the Big Cozy Cardi, that wouldn't come into effect. You would still be starting with a rectangle, then folding to seam the sleeves so they would remain centered as they should :)
I see it's another Where's Waldo day. LOL
I haven't cast on my socks yet. I have one more ball of yarn to wind up. I'd like to join the shining challenge.
Knitting on my Tesselated socks while watching this. Thanksgiving was pretty busy so I didn't make much progress yesterday.
I am interested in the lap support for supported spindle spinning. Would you provide the details please
So much singing this time!
I’m doubtful about the durability of mosaic stitch on socks. 😮
