This is the story of a weapon. One that has made its way from the hands of a defender to those of a dancer. An age-old tradition that has changed with time to become what it is today. A martial art that has traveled across Asia. Aishwarya Manivannan walks us through her journey with what is considered to be a masculine sport, Silambam. She speaks of a journey of strength. Of discovery. Of spirit. The journey of a 3000-year-old martial art. The pride of Tamil Nadu.
The music is inspired by lines from the Thirukkural that speak for the power in a woman’s glance
    கூற்றமோ! கண்ணோ! பிணையோ!
    மடவரல் நோக்கம் இம் மூன்றும் உடைத்து.
(Death? Eyes? Or a doe? Her simple sight has the spirit of all three.)

It's a great video. Nice to see our culture getting carried on.
The camera angles and lighting are just mesmerizing. The sub-titling is unique that is in Tamil for English dialogues and vice-versa, which I don't remember having seen elsewhere. Two things i feel could have been done and if you think it's ok, pl do. One is the name of Silambam Exponent viz. Ms Aishwarya Manivannan could have been given when she starts talking and two, her Master's name could have been given. But, to be frank, it was like watching a period movie in a short time frame. Thanks for the wonderful creation. I am sharing this video proudly with all my acquaintances.
    Regards.

@Skanda Karma, its only through education empowerment that caste system can be removed from society.. The atrocity against dalits in south india is perpetuates mainly by old aged people.. New generation dont beleive in discrimination and vioence against other castes.. Also tamilnadu hinduism is dominated by dalits.. Bhkati movement started by dalits, it was later taken up by other castes, shiva /nallachan/murugan/kali/neeli...all are tamil dalit(ancinet) gods... Upper castes borrowed them.. Have to reclaim them back..

@Skanda Karma, being born as lower caste - untouchable i dont beleive in leaving hinduism...as the alternatives are equally or worsely oppressive as through out history its seen , also generations of my ancestors believed in and practiced some thing which was /is organic to this land...some belief systems which came from another cultural background, often mocking the indegenious belifs of my ancestors by beleiving in a sky dady.., i cannot accept that..!!.. Education, collective empowerment and no one would dare to do any harm to one....

We are so glad to view this clip which otherwise would not have been possible without your efforts. We deeply appreciate your work and hope that you keep producing such works often and keep us informed and entertained.
About Silambam, I feel it not just involves physical aspect but mental aspect as well coz one has to align the stick, body, mental state and the thought process in one line to make it graceful and enjoyable at the same time. It should be taught in schools so the kids learn it at a very early age and benefit from it not in terms of physical health but more importantly in terms of discipline which will help them to build a strong character and will power. More importantly to overcome adversaries of life. Aishwarya is a great ambassador to the art and will definitely make all proud.
