I know this track very well, and this is easily the best I’ve ever heard it sound. Detailed and solid sounding but oh so musical!. Much better than the straight digital version. The voice finally sounds natural, the instruments finally sound real - guitars, drums and cymbals are spot on, and the stringed instruments floating in the air in the background simply sound magical. It’s pure music.
Your LP12 sounds so good using an Adikt MM cart. As good as many MCs IMO. Non peaky and extended. Great transients and detail. Being an MM, it’s also likely to have a more solid bass than any MC cart, which is a useful thing on a pre cirkus LP12, as the deck itself can impart a full, but sometimes soft/loose quality to the bass. So the Adkit should nicely counteract some of that. The clean and detailed sounding solid state phono stage likely helps with that too. That stage looks like a real bargain for the price. Interested in getting one myself. Hoping he’ll also make an MC version or a MM/MC switchable version in the future.
I’ve had a Technics 1200 before and found it so neutral that a tube phono stage was often needed to add some warmth, but the pre cirkus LP12 has enough warmth and magic already that a tube stage is not usually needed and can make the sound over warm. Solid state stages are often preferable. You’ve got a really well balanced sound here with this LP12 and the Spartan.
Are you planning on keeping the Adkit on this deck or will you install an MC cart soon?
Changing carts on a LP12 can be a pain compared to a Technics - having to take the Ittok off and on the deck several times - in order to avoid damaging the delicate arm bearings when installing and tightening up the cart bolts. Then aligning and setting up the VTA/VTF/SRA again etc..
Really glad you managed to got hold of a Linn. This one sounds super with relatively modest secondhand spec. I’d probably be v satisfied with this setup myself and feel no need to upgrade!
From my experience, upgrades like the Lingo PSUs, cirkus bearing or Ekos arms make the sound tighter, more detailed, more forward and more neutral, but on the downside, less musical and more clinical. You lose something really important in terms of emotional involvement. The more musical pre cirkus 1980s LP12 with ittok and appropriate phono stage is the sound I love and always come back to.
I’ve not tried the more recent upgrades - Karousel, Keel, Radikal, Ekos SE (the Kilmax spec) but all those upgrades are £££££.
Did you manage to level the suspension or are you leaving it for now?
Looking forward to more LP12 uploads and a 1200 vs LP12 shootout! - When you eventually get the time. Appreciate how long it can take to capture and edit audio, and make videos for YT. Doing them with really great visuals too must be extra time consuming. Kudos there,
