Did I Almost Get Scammed in Istanbul?

  • Later I found a lot of information online from Japanese tourists. In that area, there are many scams mainly targeting Japanese because Japanese people are bad at denying or ignoring foreigners. They often talk to you in fluent Japanese, be friendly and take you to carpet stores, later make you buy something, but in my case, it was more like an accessory store. The rest is matching to scams that happens to Japanese before, but I am still not sure.
The more I research, the more suspicious he gets. I found so many Japanese getting scammed in that area by a Turkish guy speaking Japanese fluently and I found one case where a guy also had a Japanese train card, but we can never be sure about it. I am still glad I just walked away.
However, the main reason I think he was strange is that I told him I am meeting my friend soon like I am suggesting that I do not want to go, but he was like let's go it is just a short time, please. He was trying so hard to bring me so that made me very uncomfortable.

I am Turkish. That mosque was closed for 30 minutes because of the prayer and I think no one in Turkey would drag you to offer a cup of tea. If you were in a cafe and he offered you a free cup of tea, that's okay because Turkish people like Japanese people. But no one would drag you to his office to offer a free cup of tea. Be careful the guy lied to you!

Lot's of scammers learn the languages well to scam people, especially considering the tourist population, it's possible that this scammer focused on Japanese because lot's of Japanese people come to İstanbul and you were his target that day. He could be genuine too but better safe than to be sorry, you did the right thing.

  • @SideWalkAstronomyNetherlands

Next time if they say that, just say "let's drink tea in the tea house over there...",
if it's some one just wanting to practice his Japanese he'll be okay with that.

Good advice. Don't go home with strangers. Stay in crowded, public spaces. Esspecially when you're alone in a foreign country.

If you’re instincts are telling you be wary or anxious about someone or something, it’s ok to remove yourself from that situation. 😊

    Hi
I think its a low chance that a scammer would learn that good japanese just to scam japanese, however your attitude was right in my opinion always be careful.

This doesn't sound very safe to me. Yes Turkish people are generally kind and hospitable but there are also those who want to use this situation. It's good that you didn't drink the tea.

I think you did the right thing and don't feel bad , better safe than sorry. You went with your gut which I think is so right, of course he could have just been nice and as you said you had to call your friend,if he was genuine he wouldn't have minded thinking maybe something came up with them ,stay safe and trusting yourself 💛

That instinct is put there by God, Jesus Christ, is named your conscience. YOU SHOULD never leave with a stranger like that, anything could happen.
What you wanna see, new things?
Let the curiosity go away and go just home.
Also wear a holy orthodox cross at your neck, you need to buy it from a church also. This way you ll be protected.

I don't think he was a scammer but better trust your gut feeling. You can actually smell it in the air and see it on the face if there is sth fishy going on. Well done!

Trust your gut. You were probably right. At first, I thought he took you to his Turkish rug shop because it's common for rug shop promoters to do that around the Blue Mosque (lot's of youtube videos on this). But, there's a lot of scammers down there too. I had two fake cops on a busy street in Istanbul try to steal my passport a few months ago and there's a huge black market down there were stolen passports are sold for $10K (which another youtube warned me about). I went to the police substation after that and they verified what I thought that those guys were fake. Luckily, I only showed them a photocopied passport and visa and the fakers left Just a simple youtube will show you all sorts of scams experienced by youtubers. This is the first one I heard where they spoke Japanese though. Most Turks only speak Turkish from what I experienced.

As a single poor man you are less likely to be scammed and more likely to be forcefully kidnapped and have your organs removed and sold off in the black market 😑
