10 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE PIED IMPERIAL PIGEON

Pied Imperial Pigeon - I was on another birding adventure to look for new species of birds and was blessed to discover the “Pied Imperial Pigeon”. I have seen the Pink-necked Green Pigeon but not the Imperial Pigeon Species at Bishan Park.
Among Pigeon Species, this species is one of the most beautiful, with its body plumage, almost pure white, and bluish black on its very long tail and wing tip. It has a light blue beak.

(1) It is one of the largest of pigeon species.
(2) They do not go down to forest ground to eat or drink. They are able get enough moisture from the fruits they eat.
(3) Unlike other birds, they feed mainly on fruits but their favourite is fig.
(4) The word “pied” means having at least two colors, and the pied imperial pigeon is so-named for its mostly white to pale cream color with bluish-black flight and tail feathers
(5) Range & Habitat - The pied imperial pigeon can be found in parks and forests, usually up on tall trees
(6) They often fly in group from Island to Island in search of food source.
(7) These pigeons are among the most powerful and agile flyers in the bird world and their flight muscles are relatively larger than in most bird groups.
(8) They can swallow extremely large fruits with very big seeds.
(9) Life Span : It has been reported that they can live up to 20 years.
(10) Conservation Status: This species is still growing in number and is of least concern.
