Under Ohio law, Vance can continue to serve as Senator while capaigning, and if the ticket wins, the Repblican Governor can appoint another Republican to his Senate position with about 4 years left in the term ...and it will be quite a few months before the successor has to run in an election to hold onto the seat for the rest of the term...and gets to run in that election as a sitting Senator.
Events can unfold differently but Vance running protects a Senate seat in GOP efforts to wrest leadership of the Senate away from the outspoken and crafty Democrat Chuck Schumer.
Selecting Vance eliminates the problem that would attend selecting Senator Marco Rubio or Congressmen Byron Donalds -- who both reside in FL and could cost the GOP ticket the hefty number of electoral college votes from that state -- since having two residents of the same state running together constitutionally penalizes the team.
Trump would have to move to NY or NJ because either the Florida Senator or the Florida Congressman would have to give up their current elected office in order to run, jeopardizing GOP majorities in the federal legislative bodies.
Gov. Burgum, also on the shortest of the VP short lists, seemingly lacks the charisma and name recognition to help Trump on the ballot.
