I had a feeling to that Luigi was also feeling doubt when he was captured. Like the kind of doubt where he felt (for whatever reason) that Mario wouldn't come. Maybe he had a brief moment where he felt Mario was tired of saving him. Which we all know isn't true.
As far as Luigi catching on so quickly in the end fight, I would offer it was the Power Star that gave him the boost.

That would be my only complain about the movie, Luigi has always being my favorite character in the entire Mario franchise, and I really would have loved to see him more on screen.

I love Luigi so much! Like you, I missed seeing more of him on screen, but when he does appear, he shines! And I love that the central focus of the film was the bond between Mario and Luigi, it also made me think of the Luigi's Mansion and Mario & Luigi games, which I LOVE.
About Luigi's abilities at the end of the film, my theory is that the power-ups control you first until you learn how to handle them. This is seen, for example, when Mario turns into a cat: he doesn't voluntarily dodge Donkey Kong's attacks, but the power-up controls him to dodge them. And the same is seen when Mario touches the leaf: he doesn't know how to handle the Tanooki suit, but the tail just set itself in motion to hit the Koopas and fly away. So I think it makes sense that the same thing would happen with the superstar. After all, Mario has trained, yes, but he's never used such a powerful power-up, and yet he and Luigi execute the same moves and know what they have to do even though they've never faced Bowser or an army. They also look very confident throughout the whole sequence, and I think this is also influenced by the fact that they're finally together and working as a team, as they reassure each other.
I love this movie and I can't wait for a sequel AND a Luigi's Mansion movie! Greetings from Spain!

I would've liked more Luigi screen time, but I think the movie was just fine. You can't get everything you want in a single movie.
So that just means more movies are needed, and seeing how well this movie did I hope that means we are definitely getting a sequel.
5:49 I also feel that Luigi shouldn't be able to all that without some training, but I don't think you would be able to fit it properly in that storyline. I do think that Luigi is athletic though, but he is carrying that heavy toolbag.
I hope that when the DVD comes out there will be extra scenes for us to watch. Like, the extended version.

Yeah its weird how Luigi can move like that but it could be a Confidence thing like when he's Confidence he can do amazing things

I thought Luigi being able to keep up with Mario was BECAUSE the Super Star gave him super everything. I don't think he would have been near his level without training otherwise.
Luigi was always my go to Bro too. I liked green much more than red as a kid. Still do, really, though I can play as Mario without complaining about the color now.

I think what a lot of people don't talk about is there's strong visual foreshadowing throughout the whole movie. Luigi during the dog scene, is scared but stops the mirror from hitting Mario with water, in the exact same way he uses the manhole to stop the fire. Little things like that do happen all throughout. I do agree, since it's a kids movie, that doesn't register the best doing such subtle things, but for the people who do realize it, it enhances the experience.

I would love the part where Luigi gets his extended screen time in the dark lands before he gets captured. I really wished they did a post credit scene where he won in the training course by doing absolutely nothing, that would be shocking for me. Overall, an 8.5/10 for the movie, I always wanted to watch the Mario movie in my childhood

honestly i wished that in the castle in the badlands he used the toolbox he brought to make a makeshift poltergeist from luigi's mansion and fight off the dry bones outside

It would have been interesting if luigi was forced to do acrobatics in the dark lands. He would have learned like Mario, but in an unsafe environment. That extra stress and harder training could explain why he jumps higher than Mario despite being shown to be less athletic in the beginning.

I wanted more of Luigi in the darklands doing Luigi's Mansion type stuff in his trademark cowardly way. It was such a waste to have him captured for most of the movie.

I’m just upset that Luigi wasn’t in the film most of the time. The film is called “Super Mario Bros.” You can’t have that title for a film if one of the main protagonists is trapped for an entire movie and misses out on the adventure. I don’t care if Peach was to be given more screen time and heroic personality, she is still the damsel in distress in the Mario universe, and is supposed to be the one who is kidnapped and trapped by Bowser, while Mario and Luigi try to save her together

Captain Marvel in Endgame was more useful than her version of Luigi.
They don't know how to adapt it to the big screen. For her contribution to the film, it would be better if they hadn't brought it to her.

Ngl Charlie Day as Luigi was a bad decision, the movie did well, meaning sequels can come. We will NEVER get a Luigis mansion spin off with his style of acting. It cant stand alone, and hes stated multiple times he wouldnt continue the voice if it went more than 2 movies.
I just want a luigis mansion movie 😭😭😭😭😭
