Programming Sony (X950H) TV Remote to Cable or Satellite Box (H Series - 2020 Models)

- This video shows an updated version on how to program your Sony TV remote to Cable and Satellite boxes. This is specifically for Sony models for 2020. The model in this video is a X950H model with Android 9 as the software. In some previous videos we made there was a need to use the IR emitter cable and connect it from the TV to your box. This cable is not needed or used in this new 2020 model. It is done through the TV menu only.

Can't find my Arris box by either method. It did when we first bought the TV but for some reason it has become unpaired.
I get all the way to the pres the channel button on setting up my cable box, and it won't change Channel and I can't complete the setup. I've reset the tv several times, I've unplugged the cable box & hdmi cable, replaced batteries in the remote. This is infuriating because I just want the damn guide button to work, all of a sudden stopped but it had always worked before. Any ideas?
Just had the same issue. Make sure to change what the TV button on your Sony remote does when you press it. Go under settings > channels and Inputs > TV button shortcut. Set it to activate the correct HDMI input for your cable box.

great video as always! One issue Im having with the tv and im not even sure if it is an issue. I have xfinity cable and the tv works great but I am wondering about the remote. The sony remote I have paired and I can even use voice commands with the microphone button to raise/lower volume, turn on and off the tv but the one thing I cannot do is use voice commands to change the channels on the xfinity x1 cable box. the xfinity x1 remote I can use voice commands to change the channel and would like to do the same with the sony remote so only one remote would need to be used. A family member is handicap and the sony remote is much more user friendly to him than the xfinity x1 remote with buttom layout etc, except for not being able to use voice commands to change the channel. Is it even possible to use the sony remote voice commands to change the channel? thanks...
If you press the google mic button on the remote and say "voice hints" it gives you some of the choices you have to talk to the TV and box. In our shop with the Tivo box, after we press the mic button we can say "channel 3.1" and the Tivo Box will goto that channel. (we are using an off-air antenna for digital channels). You could say "Channel 5" and it probably would go there with the box. This is not foolproof and does not work perfectly with every box out there. So it may not work with yours. Try that, hope it works with Xfinity.
I use a SONY XR65X95J TV, but I still have a problem with the controller, when I hide the decoder in the closet, I lose the ability to switch channels - it does not work with bluetooth?
Hello and thanks for your help...I have a newer sony TV (90J) and followed all the steps including identifying the Model number on my spectrum box...I never saw a window that allowed me to "Pair" the remote and the relevant window i did see looked like I was supposed to enter a code on the remote. I never saw a code and it quickly advanced to the next screens....So although I go to "Setup Complete " The spectrum box never paired with the remote...any suggestions? Tanks

It most likely did pair and didn't require a code, that is an odd screen, and we have seen that. So it is not a concern if the remote works with the box.

Using the TIVO Edge. If you can't get to the DVR with the DVR button hit display than home(menu) to get to the DVR.

So my remote works except when turning off. TV goes off but the DirecTv box stays on.
I live in the middle east and we don't yet have this option in the setting menu. Sony said they'll include it in a future update. The tv here is called X95 H

I have my 950h connected to a DH790 a/v rec via eARC., I have my cable box connected to the DH790 via HDMI. Will the process you described work with this arrangement? If not what will?
I just bought a W830K Sony TV. Unfortunately the “Cable Box Set Up” is no longer under External Inputs.
That would be correct for your specific model the W830K. That is the 32" Sony. While I don't have that set in the shop now, looks like this feature was not added to that model. Keep in mind these features are based on certain model numbers. In this case this feature only refers to the X950H model.
Generally speaking for TV's 55" and larger manufacturers make at least 5 or more models. Differences are picture quality, reliability of the TV, and features. This is the case with most manufacturers not just Sony.
If you looked at the X90L (2023 model) and higher models that feature would be there in external inputs.
You connect the cable box in any specific HDMI PORT?
It should not matter which HDMI port it is connected to.

I followed the instructions and my Sony tv controls my directv box with one exception. It does not power on or off the directv box.
The problem I am having is when I switch to Netflix or CZcams or Disney + and then try and go back to directv (which is set up to do once I press the TV button on the remote), it tries to turn on my directv box (which is already on) so it actually shuts it off! It will ask twice to turn it on and I will have to pay attention to turn it back on or off I aim the remote away from the box so that it doesn't turn it off the first time. Sorry for the rant, but is there a way to stop the remote from trying to turn on the box completely?
I will do some checking if there is an option not to turn on the equipment when you press TV. Otherwise, the best option is after you press TV, if the satellite box shuts off, press the TV button again, usually you see a screen on the bottom with cable/satellite box options. The left side shows power, arrow to the left and select power and see if the box turns on.

What do you mean USB? The remote talks to the TV via bluetooth except for the power button which is IR
Will the Google Assistant from Sony remote work with this setup to search not just subscribed services and apps, but across your Live TV channels and PVR recordings as well?
On the X90J you can talk to the mic and change channels by saying "Channel .." Usually DVR will work also, however there is a direct button on the remote that says DVR. But not every voice feature will work with all the different boxes out there.
Some voice features will work some may not, it is dependent on the box you have and the brand, model of the TV.
I’m feeling miserable Right now… I have a XR-65X90J the STB control used to work well but suddenly the TV lost the STB control. Now all the buttons in the remote are upside down, there is no channel +/- control… the cross buttons now are the back button, and every time I tried to configure again the feature, gets to the same weird control configuration. IDK if this could happen with the last SONY update, but, I’m not able to make it work again u_u

I will most likely make another remote video with the new K models, but I would go into the TV menu and goto the cable box control setup. Turn off "control with TV remote", then scroll down and reset it. Then setup the remote again to your STB.

Hello, before you move to the next screen you need to make sure you see a picture in the little black box. Make sure your source device (cable, satellite etc..) is on, and you have the right HDMI input selected. It may take 10 to 20 seconds or more to see a picture.
Every now and the my A9G would not work with my cable box, and then I'd have reset it and set it up again. I've done this countless times. Its really an annoyance. Is this a flaw wit the tv or something else. I'd like to get to the bottom of this but I can't find anything on this issue. Please help thanks.

Tried doing it, won't pick it up automatically. Entered the model in manually and it just sits on "Detecting TV remote control" forever.
This is not guaranteed to work every control box. It may not be able to do yours. Try putting the box model number in manually

Is there a way to set the four coloured buttons for apps like Disney +? If not what are the coloured buttons for?
That would be nice, but no, not that I am aware of. Those buttons are not used often, but would be used if an app, streaming device or cable/satellite box had certain features that used the colored buttons. This we saw more on older cable and satellite remotes with those colored buttons. In the menu some features required those buttons to be pushed in order to work.

My tvbox is Amino Aria 710, but I can only select 7x or 7. Both dont work 😭

Sorry it probably won't work with it. One other note, is the X94J is not a current American TV model, so I am not sure how those are supported with cable boxes.
Have a Sony Bravia 85-inch screen TV with no remote try to reset it to factory default went out and bought a remote from Walmart does not scan the remote what am I doing wrong
I would recommend purchasing the original sony remote that came with the TV. The remote talks with the TV via bluetooth, therefore if you do not have that remote, the cable box programming will not work.
After doing this will the remote continue to operate the sound bar as well ?
Yes the sony remote will still operate a soundbar as long as the soundbar is hooked up with HDMI CEC (HDMI ARC) to the TV.
What about radio frequency control (i.e. Direct TV) vs IR control
It should work with a directv box, but may not turn the power on or off with the box. To my knowledge the Sony remote uses bluetooth for all buttons except the power. Power is infrared.

Can you program the remote to control the volume/power of s receiver?
Not directly. The remote will adjust the volume and power of a receiver if the receiver has hdmi arc or eARC. This would be done through HDMI CEC and not by programming the remote to the receiver.

Any was to use the Sony remote in RF mode with Directv
The Sony remote does not use RF. It is bluetooth. I would try searching for the directv model number in the remote programming setup. You can also unpair the remote in the menu which only makes it an IR remote. See if that would work.
Hey, there was a recent update on the Bravia that disconnected my remote from the box and it won’t reconnect. Have you had a similar issue?

If it does not work after that I would suggest going into that menu, turning off "control with TV remote" and choosing reset at the bottom. This will reset the program. Then turn it back on and set up the remote again to your box.

I've got an issue where my remote seems to forget the programming to my TV box every 24 hours or so. It's so frustrating!!!! Help please lol
@@andrewsommers8733 As mentioned above, ours lost its program after a software update. After we reset the remote menu and programmed it again, that solved it. I have not heard of this with anyone else. Check software for updates, unplug TV box from power for a few minutes and reboot it. If that still happens, do a factory reset on Sony TV and program remote again to box.

Unplug units from power, check for software update in Sony TV, it may not work with every receiver.
Is there a way to do this with the X750H model, it seems to have different menu's.

I do not exactly know. Sony (and most manufacturers) do not make the same TV or models from country to country. These videos are intended for products in the U.S.A. only. Some things may carry over some may not. Two suggestions, 1) If the info box is from the TV press the display button on the Sony TV remote. This will bring up and take away the display information. 2) Look for that same type of button on your cable box/satellite etc.. remote and try that. 3) Contact Sony support in Australia.

Mine was originally programmed to control my cable box and it did setup very easy...BUT a week later and it will not. I’ve tried to reset, pull power off, setup by make and model, etc...and while it oooks like it finds the box very fast (by showing me the image) it will not control the box. Any thoughts?
There was a software update in late 2020 where we found the remote lost it's cable/satellite box control. The fix was this. One press and hold green power button on sony TV remote, when you see cancel, or restart, choose restart.
If it does not work after that I would suggest going into that menu, turning off "control with TV remote" and choosing reset at the bottom. This will reset the program. Then turn it back on and set up the remote again to your box.
It looks like you have also done the main reset of the TV which places the TV back in factory settings out of the box. If you have not done that, do it two times in a row. Then set your TV up and see what happens. Our TV in the shop is currently working fine with the remote controlled to our box.

How do I turn off my Sony TV with the remote?
All the Sony TV remotes have a green power button at the top right of the remote. This power button will work any Sony TV of just about any age. That should turn your Sony TV on and off.
My Sony remote does not power on and off my cable box.
Try rebooting your TV, hold down the green power button on the sony tv remote, the TV will either reboot, or you will get a message that says cancel or reboot. Choose reboot. See if it works.
If it does not go through this procedure again, and you may want to try it differently by searching for specific model number of your box, which is partially shown in this video linked below at the 6:03 mark. (not the video you just watched). czcams.com/video/IWUFOS0Gbcw/video.html
my tv is not able to search for satellite box.
Not all the TV's had this feature, especially if it was not a model in the United States.

x9500h doesn't have cable/satellite box option
That could be the case if it is not an American TV model. We can only support American TV models.

@@FisherElectronics its really weird, because yesterday when the sony technicians came to my house to set up the TV, they can connect the remote to my set up box. But after the latest sony tv update, it doesnt work anymore.

Not happy with Sony. TV always has some issues. Had geek squad out way to many times.
