  • This is how JODO SHINSHU HONGWANJI-HA School offer Incense. Other Schools might have different way of offering incense.
I should have said "1,2,3,4 steps of Incense Offering," but oh well...
    Note
    1. Technically "Incense Offering" is a translation of "供香 Gu-Ko (offering incense)," but we use this translation for "お焼香 O-Sho-ko" which means "burning incense."
    2. Bow without putting hands together is called "揖拝 Yu-hai." Bend the body for about 15 degrees.
    3. Putting hands together is called "合掌 Gassho." Hands close to the chest, fingers straight pointing about 45 degrees forward. Thumbs gently holding the beads.
    (Beads are called "お念珠 O-Nenju")
    4. In the video, I am saying "namandabu." This is the shortened version of Namo Amida Butsu (I take refuge in Amida Buddha), but the meaning is the same.
    5. Bow with putting hands together is called "礼拝 Rai-hai." Bend the body for about 45 degrees.
    - There are no official explanation of why we step from Left and step back from Right. Some people said that left represents "samsara (transmigration)" and right represents "nirvana" and we enter the world of nirvana and return from the world of nirvana. But, I don't have concrete opinion about this.
    - Some schools offer incense for three times, but we only offer once.
    - Some shools put incense on forehead, but we do not do that.
    - We burn insence to remove our smells from outside to get ready to listen to the teaching.
    - Also, as it is said "Incense Offering," we offer incense to adorn the Buddha with fragrance of incense to pay respect to the Buddha.
