    I always loved Kaiba's line when Siegfried checks his deck and freaks out on seeing three Blue-Eyes White Dragons: "By the look on your face I'm guessing my future's looking pretty good."
    More so amusing given pulling three Lv8 normal monsters in a row without an existing field/hand support is a death sentence.

      @ShackleYT nah, the effect for xyz dragon cannon is on the card in the anime.
      I may be wrong on this but from what I understand.
      Basically xyz dragon cannon is a bit of a messy card. Because you special summon it from the extra deck and don't fusion summon it that card was never properly Summoned first. This means it can not be summoned using dimension fusion.
      Chaos emperor dragon on the other hand can be Summoned because it was properly summoned the first time it can be Summoned back using dimension fusion.
      I'll also note that this may no longer be the case because of have changes since 2000 as the card has like 6 errata.
      But at the time the episode was made it could. Kinda no wonder it has so many errata.

    I believe that, due to game mechanics at the time, you cannot change a monster's battle position during the turn an effect does that already. I could be wrong, but that might be why Zigfried didn't do that.

    • @justinalicea1590
      @justinalicea1590 Před 8 měsíci +138

      That makes far more sense to begin with. There would be no purpose to the card switching a monster into Defense position for an effect if that effect didn't keep it in Defense position. It might as well not have that text.

      @briansilva3344 Před 8 měsíci +67

      That’s correct, because that’s how I learned to play the game. if you change the battle position by a card effect or your opponent does, you forfeit the chance to change it manually. that’s changed I believe, if you battled this turn you can’t change it manually.

    • @bigbangtheory0000
      @bigbangtheory0000 Před 6 měsíci +61

      I think there's even more truth to this. I think it's been stated in lore that Kaiba basically knows which cards in his deck are which by feeling alone, so he can stack his deck in a specific order while shuffling and without looking at the cards. He also has a photographic memory, so he can memorise the exact order of his deck and recall it perfectly.
      If that all is true, then he means it wasn't just a calculated guess, he knew exactly which cards were next for him to draw, so he formed a winning strategy equipped with that knowledge at that very moment.

Kaiba is willing to take the proper risks in the limelight to earn his success. Ziegfried works in the shadows, and resorts to scheming, but ultimately is always trying to cling on to the safety of blaming others for his failures. Assuming he had about 25 cards left in his deck and 2 cards (card of demise, and card of sanctity) in his deck that could give him the set of dominoes he needed to win. He had an 8% chance of successfully pulling this off.
      I think instead of saying he takes the proper risks a better evaluation would be he knows when to put it all on the line and his intuition and his trust in it usually gives him the edge. Whereas the Z man plays it too safe and loses because he doesn't take the steps he needs to before someone else does.

      @@DarkMagicianGirl0 There's one slight problem with that logic: Remember Kaiba's duel with Pegasus near the end of the 1st season? Pegasus thought to himself after Kaiba set aside his hand to stop Pegasus' cheating (which didn't work) that Kaiba, being a top duelist and having a very high intellect, very likely would've memorized his entire deck and determined which cards were where over the entirety of the duel. Pegasus deduced that he could just peer into Kaiba's mind, see every card in his deck due to Kaiba having his deck memorized, guess which cards he had yet to draw or play, and plan accordingly in order to win. It is very likely (but not absolutely certain) that Pegasus deduced correctly because he ultimately wins that duel.
      If Kaiba does have that kind of brain power (likely considering he's a child prodigy), then he could've kept track of which zone all of the cards in his deck were throughout the duel. Sure, there was still some luck involved, but if Pegasus' deduction was correct, then the chances of Kaiba pulling that combo off would've been higher than 8%. Kaiba likely would not have guessed that he would play 4 spell cards that turn if he didn't know that most of the cards in the remainder of his deck were Spell Cards. The chances were still slim, but not that slim.
      This is all speculation, and i could be way wrong, but it's likely that the above is what really happened.

And if you were paying attention to which cards were played, most of them were monster cards, so while he’s using a little typical Shonen antihero yugioh luck, the claim isn’t as outlandish as it seems if you know his deck. Seeing card of demise, you’re drawing up to your 26th card, having majority monsters, it is conceivable that he still had some power spells left even beyond what was shown. Or maybe those were his last 5 and he’s just a badass. Who knows. Either way, while it might be a stretch, I’d say I’m still a fan of the symbolism.

    Didn't even know that Valkyries and Chaos Emperor Dragon were anime cards. Watched a lot of the OG series as a kid, so no idea if this part somehow never made it to my country or if it already was "after my time"...

    The Kaiba Cup has many rough moments, but it gave us the two best duels in the original series with spectacular last turns (I hope you cover Yugi vs Leon too soon) that alone justify it.
    But Kaiba seeing Card of Demise and visualizing immediately the more convenient pattern is hard to match, not even Yusei at his best can reach that. It might be professional deformation, but the sheer mathematical precision of it is a thing of beauty.
    And as far as Kaiba goes, it also gives us some very good characterization, showing him actually putting his duty before his pride was good.

  • @CobaltDraco

    While Zigfried was a bit preemptive with his mystical space typhoon, I give him a slight pass for a particular reason: His own deck banishes cards too. If he left MST face-down and it was somehow stopped from destroying soul absorption, he'd be FAR worse off with Kaiba regaining lifepoints with each card Zigfried banished.

I can maybe see potential changes in how the duel would’ve played out had Playmaker summoned his extra deck at monster at different points as we see he uses exactly 15 monsters in his extra deck so that’s an interesting place to look into. Tbh, that ring card, with some changes, could be interesting in the TCG. If the effect becomes that you equipe it to a monster, the player who controls that monster draws 2 cards every turn and the opponent draws 5 cards right now, and the monster basically turns into a dud... It would be interesting. You could use either to shut down a boss monster and give yourself a comeback, at the cost of giving your opponent advantage over time, or use it to stop a play, let your opponent have the initial hand advantage but now you get 2 cards every turn.
