  • Don from Don's Old Radio Shed CZcams channel sent me an immaculate clock radio to repair and keep. It doesn't work and needs a full restore. The clock doesn't work either so I test out my horologists skills, there are a lot of bits in there, will I be able to fix it?

      Its Remembrance day in the UK as well ....with everyone on tenterhooks as theres a demonstration competing with it as. well as the Lords Mayors show I believe in the City of London . Its unheard of to have a mass demonstration on this day competing with Remembrance day ..... the beginnings of a changing world and changing priorities I guess .

      It's very sad that we have such DEMONstrations going on in London to remember the lives lost for freedom of speech. The disgusting Neo Nazis (ironicaly) seem to have the loudest voice.
      When you think about it, they were the kind of arseholes who started WW2 in the first place. Brave young men and women lost their lives in the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the Army, to give these arseholes the freedom of speech to spread hate, and intolerance towards others once again.
      So, so sad and sickening.

    Good tips on removing stubborn knobs and on clock repair. The secret to clock repair is in the oil. I learned that after repairing my grandmother's 100 year old wind-up wedding clock which hadn't run since the Great Depression. A thorough cleaning of the gears in a non-residue forming degreaser (brake cleaner, flux remover, e.g.) and then a few drops of Liberty clock oil on the axle points and in the mainspring and it sprang back to life. Hasn't slowed down except for weekly windings in the two years since my repair. As you know, clock oil has high viscosity and doesn't evaporate or gum up in time, so it is the preferred lubricant.

    Hello David. I agree with you; Don sent you a beauty! I really like the Ivory case with the symmetrical "art deco" like look. You're right. The condition is fabulous, and the right collectors are wishing they had your good fortune. Wonderful job on the circuit analysis and repairs. Like so many others, I enjoyed watching the clock disassembly, clean-up, relubricate & reassembly. BTW...don't ever get the idea that your fans get tired of watching you polish these old classics. That's always part of the fun! Thanks again Dave! -Chris

    Nice looking set. I was going to mention that the clock likely had Radium on the hands. But you beat me to the punch. I have a couple of
    G.E. sets that have Radium on the Dial. Since the "Glow" went away long ago I usually paint over them to stabilize the Radium and help

I had snoozed off a bit while watching with my headphones on (no comment on the content, its 2AM here! ) I was nearly full asleep when the damned thing went off. Neat way of pulling those stubborn Knobs off Dave. Manuel Caldeira over at EO&N usually pinches two of his wife's best silver tea spoons and using the spoon ends gently levering against the case. Filing all these techniques away for the future. Been following Don in his rooster shed for a while now.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Bob, thanks. I thought that was the best way to tackle that particular large diameter knob.They have a fairly heavy spring clamping the shaft and any sideways pulling easily snaps the plastic at that spot. I would not have attempted to lever against the plastic dial in any case. I wonder if Manuel's wife thinks he is some sort of Uri Geller understudy with all the bent tea spoons laying about the apartment 😂

    I don't know about this one, but the socket on the back of clock radios were usually hooked to the clock. The idea was that you could hook up your coffee pot and have it turn on with the alarm, so your coffee was hot when you got up.

      That's not a Telechron motor and in fact it's very different. _All_ Telechron motors (even the first demonstrated prototype) self-start in the proper direction. This motor sometimes starts backwards and needs the spring to correct it.

  • @Donno308
    @Donno308 Před 9 měsíci +3

    Hi Dave. Great video! I laughed myself silly! Nice work on the clock. I was trying to work out why it sometimes started in the wrong direction and how it related to the function of that spring around the worm drive. Very timely (sorry) because my clock has stopped working. That's CLOCK, Dave. It was running fine until I adjusted the time, then it stopped. I also think there must be a mechanism to disengage the worm drive while adjusting the time, but maybe I' wrong - it might just be a friction clutch or something. I never pulled mine completely apart so I don't really know! Anyway, I'm glad you liked the radio and had a bit of fun with it! Cheers.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Don, where have I heard that name... 🤔
      Oh no, you want your clock back? err... I sold it.
      I get it... CLOCK, what else would it be 🙄
      There are a few spring friction plates connecting the shaft to the gear to allow it to rotate independent of the drive mechanism for adjusting the time and alarm 🙂
      Thanks again for sending the radio and I did have fun with it. Don't be afraid to pull the clock apart, they are simple enough 😀

    As a suggestion to lubricating the gears David, I use Militec 1. On virtually all things metal, It's a dry lube technology, I've used it on cars, Trucks, anything with a motor and anything that is metal and has wear and tear.

    Its interesting to see a "hotpoint" radio. Here in the US, GE only seemed to have used the hotpoint name for electric appliances (usually for kitchens not clothes washers/driers). In the US, GE also owned the the telechron clock brand and that's usually what they used in their US clock-radios. Telechron clocks are fairly interesting in that they have a transmission (for lack of a better word) that was a sealed unit full of lubricant, and there are ways you can refurbish the inner lubricant by either drilling holes into the transmission or doing a baked heat-cool down-baked heat cycles to get the assembly to "suck in" fresh lubricant through its joints.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Před 9 měsíci

      I seems the Hotpoint name was used in several countries. A clock with a transmission, amazing. Thanks sgath92 🙂

      I've seen a Hotpoint TV or two on Shango's channel so it's probably an era based thing. Philco also made fridges but we don't know then for that. Regarding Telechron modules, the normal term is "rotor". It's just the true synchronous rotor plus a few of the gears. They're not filled with lubricant, in fact if you add too much they start having run problems.

    Hi David. Don - what a guy! That clock/radio is in many times in better condition than the four I have - although I do have 2 NOS clocks for them. I'm told that because the various states had their own electrical regulations at the time, the power outlet for the tea maker was omitted from some of them. The five valve versions are great performers, the four valve versions, not so great. I was convinced the bad sound at the start was the speaker. All the yellow speakers come away from the frames, I replaced some of them with Jaycar car speakers in the end. Kudos for having the courage to work on the clock, I've been to scared, but watching you make it look easy....
