Retired and looking for a hobby I settled on old valve radios. Now all I have to do is figure out how they work.
RCA Victor 26BP - a Gift from Buzz1151 - Part 3
Buzz from CZcams Channel Buzz1151 sent me a radio to restore. That was nice of him I thought... until I opened the box!
Now that the radio is working I need to work on the vinyl covered case, it's a mess, should I give it a quick clean or try and refurbish it?

David ! As Mister Radio says, "Welcome to another exciting, hair raising, fun filled, expeditious episode!" Well your video kept me on edge watching as you began the vinyl bend "sterreeetch" (!) successfully, not once, but EIGHT times! As you kept your cool applying those very fragile tiny press letters. From start to finish, this 3 part series reminds me of "Sergeant Peppers"; "A splendid time is guaranteed for all !" Great Job David! -Chris
Another amazing restoration video. RIP Trevor, you will be remembered and missed.
Great work!
Bedankt
David I have always known the A is a linear pot and B is log. Good video David as usual. Thankyou
🎉
G'day Dave how are things your end? 30+ degree temperatures in the U.K. at the moment and full sunshine on good days 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Never had that weather under the Tories 😆😆😆😆😆(yeah, just a joke). Tarmac melting on roads etc, many a bbq on the go, and plenty of lager (Fosters of course)!!! Keep up the good work Bonzer Mate. Wayne, Barbara, Nina and sweaty Noddy 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿(a white thumbs up with dark gloves on???🤔🤔🤔) 😊😊😊😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ BONZER!!!!!!
Oh...If You (or somebody you know) needs the pair of brass emblem and "tuning window" for an Atwater Kent 246, you only have to ask, and we will surely find a way to "teletransport" them there!
Hi! I've been following your channel for a long time, and albeit I used back in the late 70's and early 80's to repair tube radios , I am impressed about always finding a pair or three things to learn here in every video! I found years ago (like..30) an Atwater Kent 246 chassis (the box was shattered beyond recognition) which works and will "enter to boxes" for a full renew of ...You know...caps,, resistors, an so on. So, I give you my most sincere thanks, for teaching us so much!! Greetings from Argentina, Buenos Aires!
I usually get one of my servants to blow the fluff off the stylus but if you read my recent comment on the Scenic Routes to the Past on Spectacular Roman Mosaics video you can discover why they have all been turned into dolphins.
Carefully use abrasive on motor spindle to slow it.
I must say this is the most comprehensive radio restoration I have ever seen 😊
Such attention to detail, museum quality. How i love these old radios. Thank you, i do pick up a few tricks along the way from watching these uploads...imitation is the greatest compliment!
Another great rebuild. I like your re-wraping the vinyl & gold lettering. There is something satisfying about setting a copper rivet with a ball peen hammer, but I always use the ball end first, then the flat, but just my silly method. And love those self setting rivets. Can you contact me about restoring a Breville 621 valve radio for me.
Thanks Sly. I never use the ball side for rivets but whatever works is perfect. I don't do any external work anymore, well very limited at lease. If you send an email I will look at it but I'm reluctant at the moment 🙂
Your workmanship is quite impressive David! Now I know what to use on my old wornout vinyl leather covered record players. They usually look really trashed too. Sorry to hear about your friend Trevor. RIP and condolences to his fam. I very much enjoy both of you as content creators who never take things too seriously but get the job done.
Hi Steve, thanks. There a few colours available but nothing like the patterns they used in the 60s. It would still look alright though. Thanks for your comment for Trevor. Buzz is great 😀
Dave, you truly are the master!!!!!!
Thanks Eugene 🙂
What a beautiful works. Thank you. Best regards
Thank you Ahmed 🙂
Those locktal sockets sucks big time. Learned that watching Shango066
Yes, I have had problems with them as well. Thanks Darko 🙂
4:41...WHAT A RIP-OFF...(?) (snucker-snucker-snucker!!!)
Haha... there was no turning back from there 😀
Great work David, sorry to hear about your friend Trevor. What a mix of old and new technologies and techniques. I'd be surprised if the set would have looked better than that from the factory!
Thanks Neil. Trevor will be missed, thank you 👍
With great respect for your work! Very good video, I learned a lot from it! Good health to you!
Thank you Vladimir 👍🙂
My weeding tool of choice is a little dental pick, it's great for holding small parts down. My worst weeding job so far was heat-transfer vinyl, two lines of music with lots and lots of tiny bits, cut on a faulty plotter that didn't quite cut all the way. The resulting T-shirt did end up alright though.
A dental pick would work, I have a variety of weeding tools, I haven't tried a pick yet. The small stuff is hard to do 👍🙂
sweet.
Thanks Gaita 🙂
Thanks!
Thank you John 👍😀
Sorry to hear about Trevor the leather man. Another excellent restoration David. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks Bill and thanks for Trev comment 👍
Amazing cabinet work as always David, TOP JOB !
Thanks Bazz 😀
Great job yet again. We're going to have to see too that Buzz.
Thanks Tim, do yourself a favour and check out Buzz's channel 🙂
Your restorations are awesome. Are you placing a sticker or a note inside the radio with your name date and some important notes?
Thanks Ibrahim. I should make a mark somewhere but I haven't done so to date 🙂
RIP Trevor. You come up with ways to repair things that I wouldn't think of. Definitely looks good.
Thanks Classical. Yes, poor Trev 😔
A great job. I've not really done any case restoration on radios much. Look forward to seeing your next radio.
Thanks Nigel 🙂
Oh man, stunning work!! When I saw part one I thought there was no way you could get it looking good. More fool me for underestimating your skills!!!! 🙌
Thank you very much Jonathan. I wasn't confident I could do it either 🙂
Brilliant work!!! You've got amazing talents! Thanks also to Buzz.
Thank you kindly Greg from me and Buzz 🙂
What a great series! Thank you David!
My pleasure Tim, thank you 🙂
Magnifique travail , merci David. "Be Seeing You" ! N°6
Thank you N°6 😄
Great techniques all round David. Well down and a very enjoyable video
Thanks 998cooper 😀
Being watching your videos for a while now and they have been really good but this RCA Victor restoration was absolutely fantastic.....well done. Was wondering what your previous employment work was before you retired?
Thanks Ed, I'm glad you enjoy them. I was an aircraft engineer with Qantas for 43 years 🙂
Well done Dave, that casing came out like a charm, big thumbs up! I felt sorry for you watching you battling to get the vinyl onto the corners, so to all out there with a similar project: Go see those blokes who do the car-wrapping, there is wrapping foil out now with leather structure, HEXIS manufactures it amongst others. We just did a whole vinyl roof of an XJ6 in one single piece, it stretches incredibly well and looks exactly like the original 🙂 RIP Trevor Leatherman, sad to see yet another expert traditional craftsman leave this world......
Hi blitz, thanks 🙂 I looked up the car wrap you are referring to and it looks good, I wish I knew about that when I was doing this. I wonder if it might be a little thin and show the imperfections. I will order some when I get back from holidays and test it out. Thanks for the heads up 👍🙂
You're an inspiration, David. 😃
Haha... I have a long way to go for that Stuart, thanks 👍🙂
You must have given it a proper scare with that iPod audio. Nice job!
Yeah, that woke it up 😄
Looks awesome!!!
Thank you homotorsports 🙂
Dave you out done your self this time. Very beautiful job mate. 👍👏👏👏
Thanks Aussie Daz 🙂
After perfectly re-dressing his dinosaur, I think Buzz is watching his mailbox and he is not happy... 🤭
He will fix whatever I send him, even if it was run over during shipping 😄
Congrats David, and excellent work!! it looks brand new!! Again, Excellent work sir....
Thank you Chris. Sorry I couldn't reply on Grahams stream, I was up for another 5 hour drive the next day, I needed to get to bed 🙂
Wot. No playing of Europe - The Vinyl Countdown on the radio request?
Haha... "The Vinyl Countdown" I wonder if I could have manipulated the words to sound like that 😄
Your skill is unbelievable 😂
Thank you Larry 🙂
Nice colaboration eith Buzzo. I was thinking about how Dickel Afflocket was the result of Buzz colaborating with Bill old64goat and Uncle Dorkel. Ventriloquist and puppeteers unite! They both made their dummies. Jeff Dunham made vids about naking some of his dummies. Whadya think? An Auzzie dummy with THE HAT...
I wasn't aware of the Dickle/Dorkel story. Maybe an Aussie dummy named Dickey with a slouch hat 😄 thanks umajunkcollector.
If you could have only one, would it be the laser cutter or the vinyl cutter? Hard to choose, I suppose. Great restoration, Dave; thanks for sharing!
Hi Joseph, the laser cutter is used more but is 3 times the price of the vinyl cutter, so get both. I was hoping to use the vinyl cutter to redo dials, something that isn't easy here and can often spell the end of a radios life. Thanks Joseph 🙂
Looks and sounds great. awaiting part 4 (Tipton Buzz Magnifier Ringer).
Thanks Ralph, tune in to Buzz for part 4 😄
Buzz does an amazing job on radios you wouldnt be bothered with? I think your'e selling yourself a little bit short there David, your skills, knowledge, patience and determination on some of the projects I've watched you work on are nothing short of amazing, you are up there with the very best of them. and sorry to hear of the loss of your local leather man, its another skill that is slowly dying out, sadly. hope you can find another close to you.
Hi catey, we both like a challenge but Buzz has restored cases that couldn't support themselves, i admire him for that. It was very sad to lose Trev, you would run away from him if you saw him in the street but he had a heart of gold 👍
Fantastic restoration Dave! This must have been a pretty labor intensive radio to mass produce back in the day.
You can imagine a line of ladies gluing the covers on, they could probably churn quite a few an hour I expect. Thanks Chuck 🙂
