Polymer Clay Painting, a Flower Pendant Tutorial

  • This is a detailed tutorial showing how I ‘paint’ with polymer clay. The technique is suitable for beginners upwards as I take you step by step through the process. The first 18 minutes show how I arrived at my technique, some examples, clay amounts, colour mixes and the equipment you will need. There is a lot of talking and be warned, I talk fast too 😉
    So, if you simply want to watch the process, skip to 18 minutes, then sit back and relax as I ‘paint’ this flower pendant in clay.

    You’re a very gifted teacher & always have relevant & sellable or giftable designs. You also take the time to explain your reasoning for why or how you choose to do every step, wether it is technique or tools, all in a very systematic & sequential format.
    All of this turns what seems impossible, into a reality!
    Because of your “paint by numbers”, simple approach!
    I feel as though you are at my side, & personally helping me throughout the entire process!
    Thank you for your supporting all of us in doing far more than we ever imagined possible! I am very grateful. ❤

    I am a oil painter too mainly because I love blending and the paint allows for more of the blending and acrylic and watercolors I struggle more getting them to blend smoothly I could see enjoying this

      Oh you're just like me Katie :) Yes I started using Skinner Blends as the blending process, insetting individual pieces, but found that too time consuming and fiddly, and of course they wouldn't blend in the right shape or direction all the time, which is why I moved onto the shaded strands :) Once you get the colours mixed and extruded, it is a lot of fun. Can't wait to see what wonderful paintings you will do :)

      Thanks so much Kathleen. I have been busy creating things all my life (in between normal jobs like everyone else ;) ) so it didn't come as any surprise to my family when I started doing it full time. I did a brief art course after school, but was unable to go further due to family circumstances, so much of what I do is self taught. I have a very good friend to thank for introducing me to polymer clay. She showed me a petal cane and my brain exploded. I loved it right from the start and have never looked back. :)

    To see the distortion that is created by painting on a sphere you can try this exercise .
    Use a beach ball the bigger the better and draw a triangle. Measure the degrees of the triangle angles and they will be over 180 degrees. This is the distortion your working with. When pilots fly they aren’t flying in a straight line...they fly in a curved line that is more than 180 degrees.

    What is the point of cutting out the blue background and placing in the flower shape? Why not just lay the flower on top of the blue and not have to cut it out at the end? Im sure I missed it! Just learning, you are a very precise and gentle teacher!!

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  Před 4 lety +2

      I have found that if you just place a thin layer of clay on top it is easy to pick up some of the under colour later, If you lay a thicker layer then it makes the whole piece to bulky when you later cut it out, or too raised if you wanted a flatter look, for a journal cover, card topper for instance. As I also wanted to show how I do it for those who didn't want to make a pendant but leave the piece with a different background colour. This way of course although the flower is textured, it is roughly the same height as the rest of the background. There is absolutely nothing wrong in doing as you suggested, and definitely go for it, this is just my way of doing it and it gives, in my experience the best results for someone trying it for the first time. I hope that helps? :)

    I’ve been looking at polymer starter kits on Amazon. There are some large and very reasonable collections for kids (50 colors with lots of tools) but I just don’t know if the clay is substandard or not. I believe this is a medium I want to explore in depth so I’m reluctant to purchase something if it’s only for kids as I’m a serious artist. What are your feelings about this avenue?

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  Před 3 lety

      Hi Suzanne, this is a difficult one to answer as those kits seem very good value for what you get :) I can only give my personal opinion based on my experience. I have never used the clay you get in them so cannot comment on it, either way. I have heard from others who have bought them and not had great results and others who say they are very good value for money. If you are serious about using polymer clay, particularly for doing some of the caning techniques, then I can definitely recommend all the main, well known brands of clay. They are more expensive, but you will get good results with them. There is nothing worse than being excited about achieving something, and then not getting the effect you want through no fault of your own. So, if you can afford it, then I would definitely buy the main brands. If money is tight, then go for the non brand, but remember if the clay doesn't act quite as the other brands seem to, it would not be you at fault. As I say this is a difficult one because everyone is in a unique position. The non branded clays have a role to play and are good value for what they do, however I think you'll find most polymer clay artists use the branded clays. I hope that helps a bit. :)
