Why Bastila Shan is An IDIOT - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake LORE

  • To many, The Jedi Bastila Shan is a hero. A pillar of Jedi virtues & lauded as one of the saviours of the Republic, not just for her invaluable Battle meditation ability, but also for her role in aiding Revan fell the Maddened Sith Malak, in his quest to subjugate the Galaxy under his ruthless rule.
    But in reality, Bastila started out in the events of KOTOR a complete & utter idiot. And although we will explore her growth & why her subsequent character arc ultimately lead her to become a fan favourite, many of the fledgling Jedi traits were counter intuitive for a Jedi, at best.
    Arrogant, bossy & egregiously dogmatic ...furthermore, an argument could not only be made that Bastila, originally was more aligned with the values of the Sith, than her own canny
    To see if you share the same conclusion, first we must delve into Bastila’s own history & past that is surprisingly riddled with shortcomings for a Jedi of her Standing. With 6 Instances Where Bastila Shan Acted like an Idiot

    Bastila being arrogant was pretty obviously done on purpose when you take into consideration Jolee Bindo's conversations with the main character about why he left the Jedi order because they were blinded by their arrogance. She's meant to be an analogue for the entire Jedi order. It's kind of one of the themes of the story: the more certain you are of your righteousness and the correctness of your choices, the more easily you can be turned to the dark side.

    • @ickyfist
      @ickyfist Před 3 lety +23

      I don't know, most of them aren't really depicted that way in the story. Just having her be like that isn't really reinforcing the theme.
      I always felt like the writers had a more base emotional reasoning for how she was written. Her personality is basically Leia but as a jedi and I think they was on purpose because they wanted that character trope in the game. She's a stick-up-her-ass "princess" who is also capable and cunning. She puts people in their place and guards herself from relying on others--to a fault.

    • @Tony6Shot
      @Tony6Shot Před 3 lety +29

      @@ickyfist I'd say the second game is where the idea of Jedi arrogance shines more. Kinda like with the Prequel trilogy, the notion that the Jedi are at fault for causing galaxy-sweeping problems (or at least letting them happen) is more subtextual in Kotor 1, but 2 takes a much firmer stance with Kreia and the Exile directly challenging the Jedi Order for how they handle things.

Her Intelligence ('10') is exactly average, her Wisdom is only slightly better ('12') and only her Charisma ('15') is really on the high side. That was kind of the point. Bastilla is a very young woman who is propped up by a flawed Jedi order because of her unique ability and one major accomplishment. Said accomplishment is shown to be due to circumstances beyond her control that no one could have predicted instead of anything she did. As soon as she joined the squad, everyone repeated lectures her about her haughty attitude, lack or people skills, and inability to address their situations while expecting everyone to just bend to her will as a Jedi. She’s basically a private school kid being thrust into the real world and having no idea how to handle things when she isn’t treated as superior to everyone else.
    She’s meant to be flawed, arrogant, and deeply in over her head. A big part of why she’s so obnoxious is her overcompensating because she knows she isn’t really ready to be a knight or a leader. She knows it’s partially Jedi politics and scheming that covered up the truth of Revan’s defeat that put her in this position. Since she’s not really ready for her role, she acts out what she thinks a great and powerful Jedi Knight should be hoping that she could basically fool herself into actually being one. It’s part of why your character basically takes over as leader while she butts heads with everyone else. She is proud, but, deep down, she is scared out of her mind and wants to have someone else to take some of this responsibility from her. Just like anyone else forced into a position they aren’t ready for.
    It’s what makes her strangely likable despite it all.

      @zleeven Před 2 lety +19

      yep, also some of the best moment from her are when she start to show her lack of confidence she has on herself. heck during her and raven personal dialogue using most of the teasing lines early and choosing more serious when you start to challenge her to open up to how she feels. this does not only characterize bastilla better, but also gives more of a personality to revan by allowing him to be a goofball but also introspective and caring for others.

    Kotor 1 and 2 did a great job showing the arrogance and flaws of the Jedi order. The 'subversion' that so many of todays Star Wars writers seem to think they are doing was already done and done extemely well. Hollywood types, and many writers in general who aspire to be like them, thought so little of videogame writing for so long that I'm sure many will overlook this entirely and do their best to "improve" until they destroy. Now an aside:
    The voice acting was so damn good in Kotor. I hate the argument over which of the two games is better because they're both doing different things extremely well. Kotor 1 is a complete and well put together fairy tale with a brilliant twist. By contrast, Kotor 2 is a flawed and challenging novel which rewards you the further you immerse yourself.
    Love them both for what they are, and even despite the lackluster combat (which I still find charming) they're still two of the greatest rpg's of all time.

Jolee puts the blame on you because of force linking, but the thing is, this was all a ploy by the Jedi to manipulate Revan into serving the Jedi again. Bastilla was also in on it from the jump, her falling into the dark side was her own choice. I also never liked her romance, I still think their "romance" was a bunch of forced-on mental gymnastics. A better title would be "Why Bastila is FLAWED". Story-wise, she was a Padawan who's just practically a Knight executing what a very stupid Council thought was a good plan.
    Bastila was drawing on the bond to break free at an opportune time. It's not uncommon for Jedi, and she DID state the battle meditation drained her. Bastila switched sides "easily" because she was already pulled to the Dark Side by Revan's darkness, not to mention her own flaws on top of it all. And when it comes to Revan, her Battle Meditation is what allowed them to board his ship to begin with. Bastila DOES have an inflated ego though and underneath the Jedi she feels she must be, she's very much a petulant child.

    Personally I disagree with #2 in this list. I think that the temptation to fall to the Dark Side was built up well throughout the game if you pay attention to her dialogue, how she is almost constantly praising herself for her skills and assuming she is deserving of a title and recognition, as well as the clip you showed of Bastila having to hold herself back and calm down mid sentence, hinting that Bastila is easily riled and somewhat self centered, not that unlike Anakin Skywalker. That and Malak was promising her power and recognition that she always wanted, while she believed that the Jedi only wanted to use her battle meditation but didn't respect her.

Jedi were super human, with training from infancy to serve the "greater good" (wharever that might be). Anakin got his direct attention, but the Chancellor (hidden Sith) twisted every Jedi. He even clouded Yoda and Windu's abilities to see the future. He had clearly been working this a long time before the Trade Federation ever goaded Naboo into making him senator.
