Thanks to you I found quite possibly the best shading method ever, and I don’t mean the color part, but just the way you clip it all then erase from there
If you use this, adding a second, darker shadow colour for more intense shadows will add more dimension to your piece and make it look more 3D. You can also add a brighter light colour using an add or soft light layer following this same method
Thank you so so much! I feel like I’ve been having art block recently because I want everything to look “perfect”. But this is a great method to get me back on my feet, thank you so much!
Think of it this way; there are two groups in your painting. The light group and the shadow group. The shadow group is the absence of light in comparison to the lighter area, so its not a total absence of light (otherwise it would be black) its just contrast, which can also change if there are lots of things diffusing the light (such as clouds). But anyway, the light group is being lighted directly. The most common light is the sun. And there's always color attached to light, so the color of sunlight is generally a warm color. Therefore, that are being hit by light should be warmer. In contrast, the shadow areas are lacking that sunlight, so it will take the ambient light, or any stronger source of color. E.g the sky. Now, the sky is blue, and is shining directly down onto everything. So the shadows will reflect that strong color. Ofc this change depending on the color of your light and the color of your ambient.
another tip to add is if u want to play around with the tone of ur shadows either making it warmer or cooler u can use the hue/saturation tool on the multiply layer
thank you so much this is way easier than manually adding the shading on each part, and since im making a picture thats meant to be with just a little light this is so helpful
ive been having an art block for a long time now but i decided to finally try digital art to help with it and these kinda videos help SOOO MUCH with my frustrations of how to be more efficient
I just use black on a different layer and then change the opacity on that layer, if it looks blocky or just ugly, i smudge or blur it. No worrying about finding the right colours AND shadows are naturally black 🙂👍
the set back of this technique is make all the color look dull, but if that what you aiming that's great other quick technique to make it much more colorfull, generally you could move the HUE whatever color you on with toward the blue a little, like 10-15 degree then select darker color on that hue, just a little
i like to do like red for light and blue for shadows, i copy the layer with the color twice, alpha lock the layers and do one red and one blue. turn the blue to color burn and the red to soft light and set both to 50 opacity
You can also use curves(of your software of choice has them) to change the hue of the shadow, if your software doesn't have curves, then you can duplicate the shadow layer again after you finish defining the shadows and set it to overlay, then lock transparent pixels, and color over in the color of your choice
People saying your art looks like AI art, BITCH NO AI STOLE FROM MY ART THE AI STYLE IS LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF ART CREATED THINGS BY PEOPLE WITH A STYLE IT MALFORMED TOGETHER TO MAKE ART THAT NOW LOOKS LIKE THAT STYLE
Dude, this is a life saver!
*LEAVE IT TO REYN!*
This man is a tutorial genius
This is a known thing wtf
yup
bruh i don’t even know how to draw but this looks like it would help me so much.
Well you can do this with anything really, doesn't have to be human art, could just be a cube or something.

Thanks for the tip, now all i had to do is figure out how to do this on medibang💀
should work in every program since you only need multiply layers
I literally use the this with MediBang
@@Luna-dh6yt forgot to mention i use the mobile version:p
@@derek2288 Medibang? More like medi-dang that’s rough.
It works in medibang, don't be afraid
I never knew the fill-and-erase method existed. now, I can think more about the light and its source rather than the shadows that come from that
yeah and because you can do it faster, you get to see how it works too instead of focusing on details
@@dnzozo exactly
We gonna ignore the amazing character in the background?
enemy mob from genshin yes
Eremite enchantress not a character
nice tutorial once again ronillust!
When my friend told me this trick months ago, I cried because of how happy I was. It literally saved me an hour of hassle with every picture.
not me just looking at his majestic ahh drawing of Babel
Babel? It’s a enemy in genshin impact I didn’t know they had names
oh well yeah its an enemy but the model is also used in a world quest where she's called Babel so@@Cherry-dn2to

I started doing this recently and it helps a lot
This is actually brilliant and would have saved me a lot of time on past drawings. Definitely gonna try this soon!
I've gotten into the habit of doing base colours then the new layer but next time I'll definitely try changing the blending mode! :3

i like to do like red for light and blue for shadows, i copy the layer with the color twice, alpha lock the layers and do one red and one blue. turn the blue to color burn and the red to soft light and set both to 50 opacity
I always tried the multiply trick, but instead was painting on with black for fabric or dark red for skin. Will try it when I have time
yo god damn this is actually really smart
