The chemistry between Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy was what sold the movie for me. I can completely buy that Emme and Jonathan are perfect for each other.
I'm a 49 year old bloke who listened mostly to Def Leppard and became a massive American Football 🏈 ( go 49ers) during the eighties(I live in Northern Ireland) but I'm not ashamed to admit that I love Mannequin. In fact it brings back nostalgic memories of watching it in my local cinema which closed about 25 years ago. Also "Nothin's Gonna Stop Us Now" is my favourite song of ANY musical genre EVER. Modern movie comedies can't hold a candle to eighties comedies. I like the fact that Mannequin is a fantasy comedy yet it has no special effects. The fantasy story is told using no more than clever editing ie cutting from a clip of a mannequin to Kim Katrel moving. If it used CGI it wouldn't be half as good a movie, in my opinion
As a child of the 80s, this is one of the movies that holds a special place in my heart. And Minty is right, who wouldn't fall in love with Kim in this film? She's so sweet and willful and pretty.

And I love John Carpenter films, so I've seen that one about a hundred times, just like Mannequin. I even got my local non-profit theatre play it for a friend's birthday because he's a big fan, too.
“She’s the dummy!” I think it was a great choice to cast Andrew McCarthy as the lead. He brought a lovable loser vibe to the part which made the character relatable to those who could see themselves searching for a dream girl. I watched this movie countless times as a kid and watch it occasionally to this day. Every time I watch it I get a blast of nostalgia with all the 80’s flair this movie has. Edit - what the hell??? There was a sequel to Splash? I have never heard of it and I love obscure films.
Actually really thoroughly enjoyed splash too. As I didn't enjoy the ending of the first one the "he could never come back" it's fun seeing the characters back.
Even if he saw Leon: The Professional more recently, he should TOTALLY cover it (theatrical cut ONLY, where the Director's cut is an ABOMINATION, completely RUINING the innocent dynamic between Leon and Mathilda), where Gary Oldman gives yet another career defining performance: "Bring me *EVE·RY·ONE* !!!"
This was and still is one of my most favorite movies of all time. I was born in '85 and have a love for all things related to the 1980's. This movie along with Teen Wolf, Bill and Ted, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, A Never Ending Story and several others are why I love the 80's movies so much. A lot of them are very fantastical and have not only lots of heart, but hilarity and creativity. Things I just don't see a lot of now. I saw this movie as a kid and fell in love with it. The movie's opening in all its animated glory along with its kick-butt song really set the tone. Kim Catrall is a wonderful actress and I did quite like her in Sex and the City. But, she will forever be Emmy to me. Hollywood was a hoot and I love the crap outta this guy. I'm so sad he passed away a few years ago. This dude was a wonderful actor and had great comedic timing. And Andrew McCarthy was my secret crush lol. I'm so glad this movie was made as it will continue to be a cherished film for the rest of my days. Thanks Minty! :)

Love Andrew McCarthy! Met him not even 2 days after I lost my mom in Jan 18 2013, and he was so sweet and looked out for me that whole time I was there.. One of the last things my mom and I talked about was how happy she was when I got the chance to meet him and get a book of his signed.... This movie is one of my all time favorite...
Matt Baum had a video earlier this month in which he praised this movie FOR the character of Hollywood: a Gay, Black Man who is in a relationship, has skill at his job, and offers the protagonist support for his non-traditional romantic relationship. Hollywood commanded respect and was never ridiculed by the other characters or the movie.
Mannequin is one of those classic cheesy 80's movies. I remember it had the bombastic theme tune by Starship "Nothing is going to stop us now." I agree the original title Perfect Timing is very bland.😍
I get what you mean , but I find today's movies , actors , and entire mainstream culture far more cheesy , they don't have that oldschool feel good movie magic and are 99 percent forgettable , and It's not just nostalgia. Also 80's was among the best when It came to memorable soundtracks and great music both cheesy and extremely good , It was the peak of variety both underground and mainstream imo. 90's was the last good decade with an actual Identity that was comparable to 80's on down , but today everything Is cheesier than ever , everyone tries so hard and acts like they're cool af. It's an extremely fake narcissistic society with no Identity , social media has eevryone robotically following the same trends , the same look , the same sounds , the same cliques rather than being thier sometimes goofy cheesy self like we all can be. 80's seems more dated because ppl were actually more authentic.

Mannequin is a guilty pleasure for many people because it's innocent whimsical fun. Like fellow 80's movie Overboard, its basically a 1930's screwball comedy where you have an outrageous premise with a boy meets girl story. The point of these type of movies isn't about the plot but that you want to see the boy and the girl get together and live happily ever after.
I typically hate most romantic comedies, but the ones they made in the 80's were the best. Overboard and Mannequin are two of my all-time favorites, and not even guilty pleasures. I just love them. Romancing the Stone was great, too. The 80's was such a great era.

it's not just that it's a cute love story, it was fulfilling the fantasy of "Oh man, what would it be like to be in a mall with nobody around and you could just mess around and have fun". There wouldn't be another movie like this until 4 years later with "career opportunities".

I was a kid in Philly at the time, and that movie gives me the feels every time since I remember going there as a 7 year old. Wanamakers has changed a great deal since I was young, but I can always return to classic Philly in movies like this and Rocky!
The inside is still the same but no longer Wannamakers obviously. The famous Wannamaker Eagle statue is still there along with the Christmas light show every year.
The entire movie was magical. Hollywood was great but the whole enchilada is what I stayed for anytime it came on in heavy rotation way back when. Let's not kid each other
"Mannequin" and "A date with an Angel" will forever be in my watch list. these two are my go to films growing up in the 90's, the "I wanna be that guy" films.
There was so much cast reunion, "Pretty in Pink", " Police Academy ", " Golden Girls", I'm prob missing even more! The amazing character acting from Taylor and Spader was brilliant and hilarious! I personally fell in love as a kid with this movie. Things were very bad IRL, but what an escape when I watched this! To this day "Mannequin" represents a breathe of clean fresh air in a smog cloud. The ending song still brings a tear to my eye! Nice work Minty, this def deserved its own list!
I can completely relate. I love this film, Splash, and so many other 80's films. I grew up in a dysfunctional family and movies were always the best distraction. They helped me dream and pretend and just get away from reality. I think as a whole, the 80's had the best films, and I love all genres. 80's horror was especially great.
I always thought that this was the best that Kim ever looked. She just had this positive vibe that really stood out. She was also very easy on the eyes. :-)
Starship was once Jefferson Airplane in the late 60's before becoming Jefferson Starship in the 70's. They've had a few hits over the years. "White Rabbit" is most likely thier most well known hit. Personally, I love Jefferson Starship's "Freedom at Point Zero." This album was cut after Grace Slick's departure from the band.
Slight tangent, I got to meet Grace Slick at an art gallery in Denver. She was showing her paintings. My parents always listened to them, so I naturally liked them, too.

Watching this again after many years, it's a very slow burn, but the main characters are warm and engaging, the jeopardy suddenly gets real towards the end, and it's a lot of fun. Irresistible 80s charm

Also, Titus Andromedon from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is pretty much a modern day Hollywood Montrose, so yes, you could get away with having a gay character as flamboyant as Hollywood. Also, Hollywood was criticized for being an offensive gay stereotype when the film first came out in 1987.
This movie holds a special place in my heart. I was finally allowed by my parents to go on the bus, and check out a movie theater with just my friend, and I. We actually went to see Crocodile Dundee, but it was sold out, so we saw this movie. It was pretty enjoyable.
I loved Mannequin 2 when I was little! It was my first introduction to the Mannequin franchise. It was perfect for young me. It might not hold up for adults, but I am so glad I found it then because it made me go looking for the first one and I also love the first one for different reasons. So, if you go into #2 with the idea it's a little bit of a kid's type fairytale, then I think you'll enjoy it.
Yeah, I loved it. I used to slot the VHS tape in and watch this and Commando on repeat when I was younger. I must have spent hours of my childhood waiting for the tapes to rewind.

I've read that James Spader loved this character as it was so different than anything he had ever done. His line "you ever jump out of a plane and land on your head" was hilarious.
As a young guy who had just graduated high school and had zero social skills and no self confidence; I immediately fell in love with this movie and Kim Cattrall. And all these years later, I still do Hollywood's triple snap.
You could have simply said at the end, "nothing's going to stop us now". Hehehe. Hey man I just recalled this movie about a year ago as me and my girlfriend were looking for things to watch that the other hasn't seen and this was my contribution. She never saw this. That's when I realized that the whole movie took place in the Wannamaker building! You see I live in the southern part of New Jersey and Philadelphia is the closest big city. A tradition that I formed with my friends and my son in the past seven or eight years has been to go to Philly during the Christmas season to visit Christmas village, The Comcast building and the Wanamaker building all of which have some really great traditional Christmas showcases. In the Wanamaker building they cover the pipes of the pipe organ with Christmas lights and perform a narration of the nutcracker featuring Julie Andrews as the narrator. It's really cool to watch and it's really neat to see the beauty of this open air department store. You can kind of get a sense of it when you look at the hang glider scene there really is space enough for them to do that and that is where the pipes are on display that can be viewed from one side of that huge open area. Anyway, we get about, you know, maybe a quarter of the way into the movie and I realize, "holy shit, this movie took place in Philly and that's the Wanamaker building!" It made what was a special movie from my childhood that much more special; that I've actually been spending time on the set on a regular basis. Just wanted to share that story with you guys I hope you enjoyed it.

One point I was hoping you’d make was that the group, Starship, were previously known As Jefferson Airplane before becoming Jefferson Starship, then Starship. I had to go look that up when you mentioned them because I thought you had that wrong. That was something new for me to learn. I never realized they’d changed their name twice. I remembered them as being Jefferson Airplane. Also, I wonder if Andrew McCarthy and James Spader were/are friends in real life. I’m realizing they were in several movies together back then. I loved this movie as a kid. I sort of think of it loosely in the vein of "Beauty and the Beast" in the sense that two people love each other and have to overcome some supernatural hurdle that threatens their relationship. Magic/Supernatural + romance generally goes fairly well in stories I think?
I remember them playing this and Date With An Angle a lot on cable in the early 90's. Was the cheesy Sat. double feature almost every weekend for what seemed like forever.

One of my favorite 80s comedies. Loved it since childhood because it is just so much fun. It's the kind of lighthearted 80s cheese that just really takes you to a happy place and you can tell a lot of love and fun went into this movie during production. It totally works perfectly. And it also proves yet again that critics (ughh especially Roger Ebert >_>) are full of shit and really speak for nobody. And yes, Kim Cattrall is absolutely gorgeous in this movie. That being said i love her tomboyness as well. A LOT to be honest.
I loved this movie when I was a kid. Always will be one of my favorites. I liked Mannequin 2 too when I was a kid. Mainly because I loved Buffy and Kristy Swanson was in it. Part 2 has its moments but part 1 is definitely better!!
I'm so glad you did this one! I was afraid I was the only kid of my generation who remembered these 2 movies! (and yes, I even loved 'M2', and frequently watched it together with 'Princess Bride'.) I even acted it out with my Barbies! LOL! =) And every time I hear 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now', I think of my father, who loved this movie too. Funny story; I just recently ran into a grown-ass man at Walmart wearing replica-sunglasses based on Hollywood's!! We laughed about it!
I find Mannequin has gained quite the cult following in recent years. Within the last 5 years I’d say. I first heard about it from one of my favorite youtubers and he went to the film locations and did a vid on it. I tired looking into it but could find many clips on it, probably due to copyright reasons and the fact it was all the popular yet. I’d love to be able to watch the whole move as it looks great with great music, and I’m a fan of Estelle Getty.
If you haven't seen Matt Baume's "Hollywood Montrose" character exploration video, it's definitely worth a watch for any lover of the original Mannequin film.
Yeah I agree with the other dude that Estelle Getty was a GOAT. Yeah it's crazy you can find the sequel like everywhere but I had to buy it off of my cable on demand provider to actually get to watch it.
Under each iteration they had so many awesome hits such as White Rabbit and somebody to love in the case of Jefferson Airplane, Miracles in the case of Jefferson Starship, we built this city and nothing's going to stop us now by Starship. Probably has more to say about Grace Slick than it does about people's musical taste....

I love them equally, though I get where you’re coming from. The opening credits sequences in 80s films were as fun to watch as the movies themselves! It’s something you just don’t see nowadays. Outrageous Fortune and Ruthless People immediately came to mind as I was typing this. I also loved Do You Dream About Me by Alisha, which included some of the most playful scenes between Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy. 💚🤗🤗💚

I love 80's movies. This one is even more dear to me, because as a Philly kid I remember the excitement in the city when they making this movie. Ironically I was just telling one of my younger cousins about this movie as we were walking through the Wannamaker building. Thanks Minty!
Added to the "inspired by real life" there was a "celebrity" mannequin that was a thing in the 20s(?). She was treated like a real person- taken to the theater, out to dinner, etc. I think the mannequin in the real world sequences may have been inspired by that.
I love Mannequin, it's just a fan cute and at times very funny movie. Sometimes it's nice to watch a movie that just makes you happy because it's happy. No thinking involved, no blood and guts and over the top bad guys just a movie that has a plot, is cute and that's it it ends. To this day if Mannequin is on TV I watch it, and now with streaming if I just want to watch something fun I stream it. It's really one of those movies that is ageless. You know it's in the 80's but that's what makes it so ageless in a strange way. It was almost as if Kim was born to play a character like Emmy, you can tell she had fun playing it and didn't let the fancy acting training go to her head. She seems to have better feelings about this movie than she did about the tv show that made her a house hold star. Speaking of for some people she will always be Samantha Jones but for me someone who was introduced to her watching Mannequin at the tender age of 4 she will always be Emmy. When I finally did take the time to watch Sex and the City during the cursing, nudity and sex scenes she did in that show all I could think was "Oh Emmy what would Jonathan think". If the producers of that show had been smart they would have had Andrew McCarthy on the show and given Sam a really good storyline because Andrew and Kim had amazing chemistry in the movie and Im sure they would have had it on the show too. That's why I never listen to critics, their opinions can really kill and good thing.
I loved this movie. Back in the day, I worked at a video store and this was a great flick to play in the store as it had no bad language, violence, or nudity and the sound was outstanding.
There was also the Twilight Zone episode that, while much darker, involved store mannequins having a 24-hour period to be human before converting back.
I grew up in the Philly suburbs and we'd go to that department store every Christmas season for their historic and iconic light show. (Tame by today's standards) I never watched the original. I saw the sequel a few times as a kid on USA network on the weekends. Now I'll go check it out. Thanks Mint, Mint.
This is a bit of fun trivia that I wish got more attention: the exterior and interior shots for the rival store, Illustra, were filmed at the Boscov’s Dept. Store in Camp Hill, PA; which is not far from my hometown. I used to visit that one all the time, without knowing it had been in a big production. The store looked very much like it did during filming, up until 2000 or so, when the mall the store was attached to was renovated.
I loved Mannequin. Maybe it's cheesy but I think it's a lot better than a lot of other modern-day movies. Pure escapism.

Hollywood commanded respect and was never ridiculed by the other characters or the movie.

Mannequin is one of those classic cheesy 80's movies. I remember it had the bombastic theme tune by Starship "Nothing is going to stop us now." I agree the original title Perfect Timing is very bland.😍

Mannequin is a guilty pleasure for many people because it's innocent whimsical fun. Like fellow 80's movie Overboard, its basically a 1930's screwball comedy where you have an outrageous premise with a boy meets girl story. The point of these type of movies isn't about the plot but that you want to see the boy and the girl get together and live happily ever after.
I typically hate most romantic comedies, but the ones they made in the 80's were the best. Overboard and Mannequin are two of my all-time favorites, and not even guilty pleasures. I just love them. Romancing the Stone was great, too. The 80's was such a great era.

One of my all-time favorite movies! I bought the DVD, and I watch it several times a year. I fell in love with Andrew McCarthy in this movie -- his character was so cute!!! Yes, it's cheesy, but it's sooooo much fun!
it's not just that it's a cute love story, it was fulfilling the fantasy of "Oh man, what would it be like to be in a mall with nobody around and you could just mess around and have fun". There wouldn't be another movie like this until 4 years later with "career opportunities".

I was a kid in Philly at the time, and that movie gives me the feels every time since I remember going there as a 7 year old. Wanamakers has changed a great deal since I was young, but I can always return to classic Philly in movies like this and Rocky!
The inside is still the same but no longer Wannamakers obviously. The famous Wannamaker Eagle statue is still there along with the Christmas light show every year.
This movie was all about Hollywood Montrose for me. There’s a reason that he’s the one character that was carried over. Cause he was the best.

"Mannequin" and "A date with an Angel" will forever be in my watch list. these two are my go to films growing up in the 90's, the "I wanna be that guy" films.
There was so much cast reunion, "Pretty in Pink", " Police Academy ", " Golden Girls", I'm prob missing even more! The amazing character acting from Taylor and Spader was brilliant and hilarious! I personally fell in love as a kid with this movie. Things were very bad IRL, but what an escape when I watched this! To this day "Mannequin" represents a breathe of clean fresh air in a smog cloud. The ending song still brings a tear to my eye! Nice work Minty, this def deserved its own list!
I can completely relate. I love this film, Splash, and so many other 80's films. I grew up in a dysfunctional family and movies were always the best distraction. They helped me dream and pretend and just get away from reality. I think as a whole, the 80's had the best films, and I love all genres. 80's horror was especially great.
I always thought that this was the best that Kim ever looked. She just had this positive vibe that really stood out. She was also very easy on the eyes. :-)

Starship was once Jefferson Airplane in the late 60's before becoming Jefferson Starship in the 70's. They've had a few hits over the years. "White Rabbit" is most likely thier most well known hit. Personally, I love Jefferson Starship's "Freedom at Point Zero." This album was cut after Grace Slick's departure from the band.
Slight tangent, I got to meet Grace Slick at an art gallery in Denver. She was showing her paintings. My parents always listened to them, so I naturally liked them, too.

Watching this again after many years, it's a very slow burn, but the main characters are warm and engaging, the jeopardy suddenly gets real towards the end, and it's a lot of fun. Irresistible 80s charm

This movie holds a special place in my heart. I was finally allowed by my parents to go on the bus, and check out a movie theater with just my friend, and I. We actually went to see Crocodile Dundee, but it was sold out, so we saw this movie. It was pretty enjoyable.

I loved Mannequin 2 when I was little! It was my first introduction to the Mannequin franchise. It was perfect for young me. It might not hold up for adults, but I am so glad I found it then because it made me go looking for the first one and I also love the first one for different reasons. So, if you go into #2 with the idea it's a little bit of a kid's type fairytale, then I think you'll enjoy it.
Mannequin was a massive hit here in the Philippines. Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" also topped the charts on Filipino radio airwaves.

I've read that James Spader loved this character as it was so different than anything he had ever done. His line "you ever jump out of a plane and land on your head" was hilarious.
I guess because most of roles were type-casting him as stuck up, snobby, rich kids, or generally stuck up, arrogant characters.
As a young guy who had just graduated high school and had zero social skills and no self confidence; I immediately fell in love with this movie and Kim Cattrall. And all these years later, I still do Hollywood's triple snap.

Hey man I just recalled this movie about a year ago as me and my girlfriend were looking for things to watch that the other hasn't seen and this was my contribution. She never saw this.
That's when I realized that the whole movie took place in the Wannamaker building!
You see I live in the southern part of New Jersey and Philadelphia is the closest big city. A tradition that I formed with my friends and my son in the past seven or eight years has been to go to Philly during the Christmas season to visit Christmas village, The Comcast building and the Wanamaker building all of which have some really great traditional Christmas showcases.
In the Wanamaker building they cover the pipes of the pipe organ with Christmas lights and perform a narration of the nutcracker featuring Julie Andrews as the narrator. It's really cool to watch and it's really neat to see the beauty of this open air department store.
You can kind of get a sense of it when you look at the hang glider scene there really is space enough for them to do that and that is where the pipes are on display that can be viewed from one side of that huge open area.
Anyway, we get about, you know, maybe a quarter of the way into the movie and I realize, "holy shit, this movie took place in Philly and that's the Wanamaker building!"
It made what was a special movie from my childhood that much more special; that I've actually been spending time on the set on a regular basis.
Just wanted to share that story with you guys I hope you enjoyed it.

I had to go look that up when you mentioned them because I thought you had that wrong. That was something new for me to learn. I never realized they’d changed their name twice. I remembered them as being Jefferson Airplane.
Also, I wonder if Andrew McCarthy and James Spader were/are friends in real life. I’m realizing they were in several movies together back then. Spader was in the background of one of your clips here. I’m realizing what a great actor he’s been over the years.

I loved this movie as a kid. I sort of think of it loosely in the vein of "Beauty and the Beast" in the sense that two people love each other and have to overcome some supernatural hurdle that threatens their relationship. Magic/Supernatural + romance generally goes fairly well in stories I think?

One of my favorite 80s comedies. Loved it since childhood because it is just so much fun. It's the kind of lighthearted 80s cheese that just really takes you to a happy place and you can tell a lot of love and fun went into this movie during production. It totally works perfectly. And it also proves yet again that critics (ughh especially Roger Ebert >_>) are full of shit and really speak for nobody. And yes, Kim Cattrall is absolutely gorgeous in this movie. That being said i love her tomboyness as well. A LOT to be honest.

I loved this movie when I was a kid. Always will be one of my favorites. I liked Mannequin 2 too when I was a kid. Mainly because I loved Buffy and Kristy Swanson was in it. Part 2 has its moments but part 1 is definitely better!!

I find Mannequin has gained quite the cult following in recent years. Within the last 5 years I’d say. I first heard about it from one of my favorite youtubers and he went to the film locations and did a vid on it. I tired looking into it but could find many clips on it, probably due to copyright reasons and the fact it was all the popular yet. I’d love to be able to watch the whole move as it looks great with great music, and I’m a fan of Estelle Getty.

Probably has more to say about Grace Slick than it does about people's musical taste....

I love 80's movies. This one is even more dear to me, because as a Philly kid I remember the excitement in the city when they making this movie. Ironically I was just telling one of my younger cousins about this movie as we were walking through the Wannamaker building. Thanks Minty!
Added to the "inspired by real life" there was a "celebrity" mannequin that was a thing in the 20s(?). She was treated like a real person- taken to the theater, out to dinner, etc. I think the mannequin in the real world sequences may have been inspired by that.
I love Mannequin, it's just a fan cute and at times very funny movie. Sometimes it's nice to watch a movie that just makes you happy because it's happy. No thinking involved, no blood and guts and over the top bad guys just a movie that has a plot, is cute and that's it it ends. To this day if Mannequin is on TV I watch it, and now with streaming if I just want to watch something fun I stream it. It's really one of those movies that is ageless. You know it's in the 80's but that's what makes it so ageless in a strange way. It was almost as if Kim was born to play a character like Emmy, you can tell she had fun playing it and didn't let the fancy acting training go to her head. She seems to have better feelings about this movie than she did about the tv show that made her a house hold star. Speaking of for some people she will always be Samantha Jones but for me someone who was introduced to her watching Mannequin at the tender age of 4 she will always be Emmy. When I finally did take the time to watch Sex and the City during the cursing, nudity and sex scenes she did in that show all I could think was "Oh Emmy what would Jonathan think". If the producers of that show had been smart they would have had Andrew McCarthy on the show and given Sam a really good storyline because Andrew and Kim had amazing chemistry in the movie and Im sure they would have had it on the show too. That's why I never listen to critics, their opinions can really kill and good thing.
This and and Weekend at Bernies should be watched as a double feature. Both have that same absurd comic spirit.
Don't forget to mention that Bernie played in part 2.

I loved this movie. Back in the day, I worked at a video store and this was a great flick to play in the store as it had no bad language, violence, or nudity and the sound was outstanding.

This is a bit of fun trivia that I wish got more attention: the exterior and interior shots for the rival store, Illustra, were filmed at the Boscov’s Dept. Store in Camp Hill, PA; which is not far from my hometown. I used to visit that one all the time, without knowing it had been in a big production. The store looked very much like it did during filming, up until 2000 or so, when the mall the store was attached to was renovated.
Man I adored this movie as a kid. It was so magical. Even still it's fun to watch and a fun premis.
