This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, but a few months after, Dalida covered it and brought it to fame. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. It’s a shame I’ve never listened Lara’s version. Here in France this song is such a staple of music that not everyone is covering it. You have to be a complete performer. She completely ate it… it was so touching and overwhelming. I can tell it’s a little old maybe early 00s. For those not understanding French I think it was absolutely necessary to put subtitles otherwise you would lose the meaning of it all and it wouldn’t be complete to only listen to her voice. This song requires acting, it’s a whole performance and Lara did amazing. Bravo
