It's so hilariously dystopian that we don't give students free lunches at a place where they are FORCED BY LAW to be. Feels like that counts as a form of extortion.
Then when they get to the workplace, they won't stay home when sick, or take breaks when they need to because someone told them not to. Paid lunches at schools is how they get you.

One of the scarier aspects of Dan Schneider's shows is that I watched a lot of them as a child/early teen and didn't pick up on ANYTHING being wrong. As an adult now, it's disgustingly obvious. Not only does it groom the child actors, it grooms the audience too
My issue is that the internet is worse, especially in this audience aspect, since it's so easy to reach a wide audience. As we have seen with things like Elsagate and the really disturbing things there. Mental Trauma, of adults, but especially of children, is the toxic waste / green house gasses of social media companies.

It's funny you say that but as a kid I would get really uncomfortable with all the references of feet in literally every Nick show. The scene in iCarly where Sam and Carly draw faces on their toes and wag them around really made my stomach churn. I didn't know why it was wrong, it just felt wrong -- even at eight years old.
I started watching Nick at age 11 FOR the foot stuff. I was just starting to slap the stank stuffer.

I finished reading I'm Glad My Mom Died last night &, as a victim of abuse myself, Jenette never stood a chance with a mother (& grandmother after her mother died) like she had. I'm a mother of 2 girls & some of the stuff her mother did, the shower stuff in particular, made me cringe & completely disgusted me. When your mother teaches you how to be anorexic before you even reach your teen years you're guaranteed to have an eating disorder. The way her mother & grandmother talked to her is horrific. I hope Jennette finds peace & relief from her demons now that her story is told. It's a shame she hates acting &, in particular, the character Sam so much...she brought a lot of joy to my youngest daughter & myself (we'd watch iCarly together). Now it saddens us to know what she was going through playing Sam.

I’m kind of surprised the “Queen Of The World” story took place in Canada bc that’s truly the clearest example of how bad the mental health epidemic is in American lol, I live in NY and pretty much every homeless person you meet has some sort of story like this except they don’t have a platform to share it on.
People who say "If alleged victims of abuse appear to be friends with their alleged abusers then that means there is no abuse." are just really oblivious to how abusive relationships actually work in real life. Not only are abusers manipulative with how other people view their relationship with their targets, but abusers can also make the target of their abuse feel like nothing is wrong with how they treat them. That is the abuser's modus operandi.
Or too scared to show what's really going on, so pretending all is well is the only way to feel safe.
A thousand times this. Especially if the abuser makes you feel like you owe them something or you still have connections to them.
Or they make their victims feel like they have too much to lose by speaking out about them, even if they're aware of the harm they're doing to them. Especially with the entertainment industry, the abusers are almost *always* the people who have the money and the power to 'make' someone's career, so regardless of whether the victim is conscious of the abuse or not, they're inherently incentivized by the power structure to keep quiet in order to get better roles and opportunities.
The Hollywood 'food chain' is basically built from the ground up to abuse young aspiring talent, especially women, so there needs to be significant structural change for less people to end up in situations like this.

Or sometimes you disassociate yourself from the memory than you can forget the trauma until something triggers it.
Let's not forget about Amanda Bynes, everyone deemed her crazy when she spoke about the creator and the abuse she endured. I hope this time things are actually different.

What really frustrated me about the Dan Schneider case is how isolated those kids where. Also you had an ADULT with POWER and MONEY controlling these kids. And I doubt not a single one of them spoke up. I hate how society just writes kids off. There was a principal at a school I went to. Everyone (esp the girls) thought he was creepy. He would come up behind us in class and "message" our shoulders. During 8th grade, the girl's uniform pants couldn't be "tight fitting". He would decide how tight our pants could be. 🙄 I know I at least told my mom and she wrote me off. Ran into an ex staff member a few years after. Turns out she called him an asshole.(she was told she could keep quiet or leave, so she left) And apparently the school board knew he was sexually assaulting female staff members but they "felt bad for him". And that he was "just lonely and going through a divorce." So yeah don't discount children

I cant believe its taken this long for people to realise that those Nickelodeon shows were sexualising minors. I think because the stars were kids, everyone maybe thought of it as innocent, but it was always sleazy, corporate, middle aged men behind it all. Really glad to see the events in Peterborough covered! I live near the police station where this and other "protests" have been taking place and have had to resort to staying inside on days when we know they're happening. I was laughing when I first heard about the "Queen's" antics, but it get's a lot scarier when there are people outside your window assaulting police and civilians alike because they believe every single word.

my dad is a veteran- he worked in and around planes for at least 20 years and he sustained hearing loss as a result. the VA refused to acknowledge it. thankfully, his hearing loss isn't too severe, and I don't know if his pride will allow him to wear hearing aids, but at least now he'll have the option.
When I was a kid I was told I needed them so we went to follow up and they were so expensive that we were like Nah. I'm 30+ now still haven't had them cuz I dont got a car down payment for hearing. I've just had to learn to guess what people are saying from what I hear, I'm pretty good at it to! Sometimes I mess up though lol

I lost half my hearing (60% left ear, 40% right ear) from an accident when I was in the Navy. The VA has acknowledged the hearing loss and tried to help a little. But I am, apparently, too young to get hearing aids. I am about to turn 35 in a week and a half. As long as the Republicans don't find a way to stop this hearing aid bill. This could be a massive life improvement for me and my family. I have small children who have broken down in tears too many times for me to count because they thought daddy was ignoring them. I couldn't hear them. I tried to learn sign language with them. But I only have 30% of my fine motor skills in my right hand from another work place accident. Sledge hammers are dangerous. And fine motor control issues from damage related to a snake bite in my left. All this to say, this could be huge for me and my family. Specifically, in regards to my ability to interact with my children without having to have my partner interpret for me half the time. Sorry if I went on too long
I really hope the Republicans don't destroy this progress, it would be so amazing for you to be able to hear your children. Nickelodeon was a big part of my childhood and as a pubescent boy growing up watching that stuff I'm shocked that it never occurred to me how inappropriate some of that stuff was. Glad to see there are those willing to speak out about it now and bring attention to the fucked up practices that these shows used.

I grew up on “free” or “reduced” lunch. It helped get me three middle and high school propelling me to college. I don’t think my life would be the same without that program. We need to feed them kids
Dont quit understand this as a European. In Denmark everyone just makes their own launches, or their parents do. A sandwich from home is cheap. No schools really has dedicated food staff, only in high schools they have a cafeteria. Just seems odd USA on that point.

And for university the students get funding/payments for living costs and housing. I thought this'd be the same for all Nordic countries at least, but apparently Finland and Sweden are the only countries in the world to offer free meals at schools?? This is just wild to me, it makes so much sense to feed the kids at school? But then again, equal and accessible public healthcare etc. also sounds like common sense to me, yet here were are :')

Be grateful you didn't have to experience a situation where this statement was false for you or your friends. A sandwich also isn't a nutritious meal unless you're getting really creative. I am grateful my school system had a free and reduced lunch program which even included breakfast. It isn't the highest quality or most nutritious food, but it was good enough that I looked forward to it and it took a lot of burden off my single mother who was trying to work 1-3 jobs to keep our house so I could live in a neighborhood that is safe and has really good schools. She only had to worry about dinner for me. I was lucky I got dinner at home. I had friends who didn't get any food outside of the school breakfast and lunch.
The book is amazing, really makes you go in the mind of someone who was abused emotionally and mentally for so long and understand them more clearly

It's insane how these actors come out and say explain the abuse they went through but people end up not believing them or ignoring it. Like Jennette brought up what she went through and people just focused on her being jealous of Ariana? And misconstrued what Jennette actually meant.
All data is double edged, even in these kinda scenarios. People see things but misinterpret what was said because how they process information, this can also be skewed by bias and if they are a fan of arina more then her they will take it as a negative because a negative word was used like "jealous" and they see nothing beyond that.

About the school lunches, I remember reading an article about a wealthy man deciding to pay off school lunches for all kids in a certain school, but the school turned it down. I forget what reason they gave, but I remember being frustrated. $900 does not seem like a lot to someone who makes twice that in a few days, but someone shows up with the answer to your problem and you don't take it? I hope, with schools struggling so much and people like Mr Beast stepping up, this encourages other rich folks to try again. Maybe this time, administrations won't turn down free money

What’s interesting to me about Dan Schneider is that shit has been coming out about him for YEARS and no one has ever publicly defended him saying that he wasn’t a creep. We were denied free/reduced lunch for my son at school for making too much. But these programs don't take into account anything that matters like our utilities, our mortgage, medical needs, etc. They only take into account your household size and your yearly salary. Where we live, our yearly earnings are low income. But the school district considers us too wealthy. It's insane.
A lady used to come in to the bank I worked at to get cash out to go to yard sales because the batteries for heating aids are so expensive she would try to buy used batteries at yard sales in order to be able to hear. Access to hearing aids needs to change but they also need to work on making them rechargeable in order to help people more.
I feel bad for both of them. They were teenagers. Sure, I get Jeannette’s discomfort with Ariana seemingly having some more leeway, but I’ve never gotten the impression that it made her actually dislike her. Stuff happens and sometimes it’s no one’s fault.
