What is the point of educating a foreigner on its history and then ignoring it because it is an unnecessary part of our vocabulary?
Sochi314 African Americans created hip-hop and rap... so i find it hard for us not to express ourselves because people outside our race can’t say one single word...
Sochi314 and the ideology of taking the word back is truly based on the fact that like I stated, that word was created to hurt us, belittle us and put us in a box. When I say we took that word back I’m saying we use that word and made it so that it doesn’t effect us. We overcame that word We took that word and turned it into slang we use amongst one another.. let me say that again ONE ANOTHER, it became etched in our everyday vocabulary specifically Ebonics which is African-American Vernacular example a person outside that race saying the word can be very triggering because of its significant impact in our history. This was something that outsiders labeled us as with the sole intentions of degrading and belittling... so the word coming from anyone else but our own is seen as completely offensive. Especially adding on the injustices we still face as a minority in the country as well... politics and racism go hand in hand in this climate we face today... people are more overt with their racism due to our new president and it just gives us all the more reason to guard that word...

To be a so-called educator, your own privilege and ignorance shows in a lot of your videos. I understand getting an International student's perspective but why would you ONLY have them, and not a BLACK PERSON, answering questions regarding the N word and when it's okay to use it. This is only a short video so I don't know if you educated them after the fact, but I have a feeling you didn't. If a person is not BLACK, then they have no say in if or when it's okay to use it. Flat out! If you're not black and you know the history of the word, it should disgust you so much that you wouldn't even think to say it. These black Americans feels so entitled to their "right and privilege" to this word. Their criteria is hilarious, if you're black you can't say it because your ancestors never lived through it. Well how amount African immigrants, how about adopted black people that grew up with white families and in white communities? Isn't that descrimination by itself?
Interesting take. I think a part of the issue I had is my perception that the younger generation of African Americans are desensitized to, and disconnected from the historical context of N-word; hence, their not so tactic passes to others to use the N-word indiscriminately. My argument was, no one should use it. The basis of my argument was that no other ethnic group uses derogatory slurs as a badge, if you will, the way African-Americans do. However, in recent years and in thinking more deeply on the issue, my thinking was changed somewhat as the distinctions between these two words became clearer. The differing use of it also highlighted the creativity and genius of African-Americans to transform something ugly into something worthy by simply changing the spelling of the word. The nuisance and feel is just so powerful that it give you pause. Incidentally, this is the real genius of the African people--they're the alchemists.
People dont understand that depending on your geographic location in the us and you age demographic it may be more accepted but black culture does not necessarily follow the rules of white culture which is what America is based on.
This professor is obsessed with trying to convince black people on what they should and shouldn't be offended by. Just because you didn't choose your word more carefully in one of your lectures and offended people, he now obsessed with trying to tell black people they shouldn't be offended when someone is using the N-word or coloured people. NO you don't get to dictate that. You want to question why it's offensive?, explain the history and then justify it instead of questioning the popularity of this one word? where the discussion about racial and offensive words around the world?
Jigaboo John and if they do then what? Do you think non black people would stop using the word I both context? It's not a universal word that all black people feel comfortable using, it's a controversial word! The debate is not about trying to stop black people using it, it's about the justification of other races using it and being ok with that. Highlighting a double standard because yet if there was a word that offended all Asian, Caucasian would people honestly be questioning using the term??? Instead of not using the word and allowing black people to resolve how we choose to continue using it or faze it out, people would rather dictate to black ppl what words they can use!???
NO ONE should use that word because it has a lot of pain behind it. Black people that refer to each other as that word are disrespectful to the many blacks, (particularly slaves) that fought and died for us to have freedom. That word was the last thing many blacks heard before being LYNCHED!! Blacks that use the word are only justifying what the oppressors said that blacks were....which is ignorant.
if you meant to say it in a bad way as any other words, then you should to take offense from it as you would any other words. it's all about context. if I am told there are words I can't use just cause the color of my skin, I tell them that is racist and I'm sorry they want to continue living a racist lifestyle, but believe if even 1 skin color is "allowed" to use certain words than everyone can. either everyone can use the words or nobody can. context context context
It’s like they’re bragging that they say it. Also why are they asking non black people how to say it, and if it’s okay??? That makes no absolute sense.
What I'm more surprised about was that there weren't any black people speaking up about other races using the"N"Word..could that be because in our own communities it's used towards each other?...or because in music/ videos it's being said a billion times over??..we as black people can't really complain about other races using the N word because it's all in the music that is being listened to...and not just by blacks but other races of people who buy that music and they sing along to it...and even in the movies and on television...so what leg do we as black people really have to stand on??
Camaro Smith ask yourself that question...because the REAL truth be told we shouldn't be saying it to each either period..but hey..that just my opinion..duces ✌

No one should use the word Especially a non-black person Period Black people used the N-word to take power away from the word But the context that the word is being used in now isnt the same as those who flipped the context of this word So because of this no one should be using the N-word This word has traveled around the globe and is being thrown around cavalierly as if my ancestors weren’t beat, raped, murdered, hung, and treat it as if they weren't human So no one including black people should be using this word I know for a fact anyone outside of black people (Even if you’re raping a song) wouldn’t get a pass to use this word So, I suggest you don’t say it
Black people should either stop using the word or allow everyone to use the word especially considering the original word was negus meaning KING. We have to recognize where the power truly is because it is not in the word!
i can't believe this professor is racist. all his lectures and topics he must talk about black and abuse in different ways. he should be kicked out from the college
What these kids need to understand is that the fools who "gave them permission", DO NOT speak all black people everywhere. So if they say that mess to the wrong person, its on them if a dirt nap or whatever unfavorable consequences ensue. Its beyond me why people want to say it in the first place, especially knowing where it came from, like for what?
where are the black people , this topic would’ve been better honestly. teach , could you next time do better with your selections ? nothing was proven here using non african americans or people who aren’t even effected by the word.

Makes one look like a hypocrite!!!

I'm assuming you won't if you do you some issues and probably need to see a therapist. It's called in group talk, something that is shared amongst a certin group which in this case is black people.
It depends on how you use it if you have blacks friends and joke alot and you use it they might not care but if. You use to demean someone who is black like you guys are arguing that word can bight and cause tensions, or use it as hate toward blacks then tensions can rise up real fast
"Why do you have a desire to say the word?" Same reason you have the "desire" to say the word "counterparts". It's part of our literature. You don't just skip over words in a song.
I've watched a few of your videos and they're really hard to watch. I don't know if you're willfully ignorant or not, but you barely make any significant points. And how come when talking about the usage of the n-word you only have one black person speak? Watching this was very frustrating.
Diva Cheeks Ik what u mean! It's so uncomfortable to be asked like these questions in class
It is a sociology class on race this is only seven minutes of a two hour class maybe he’s trying to get the kids think why do they say these words what do they know about these words and why do they continue to use these words it’s to help them think make them think
Its bc he really has no place leading any conversation regarding the black community. This was done messily. But he probably has a white savior complex anyway 🤷♀️
N word is a bad word period,,wrogn or right,,,people shouldnot use it in anyway,,period,,,
It’s so interesting how other cultures have derogatory words but black people are always being treated like our lives don’t matter or have enough value to have the awareness as other races
Then they need to appropriate their own racial slurs and leave ours alone.
Love the class and the instructor. I'd like to see a session where the students are challenged to make it through the day's meeting without saying "like."
girl @6:48 looks pissed, lol ya'll should of gave the mic to her. I wanted to see what she had to say
Why the heck do they feel the need to say the word. I'm black, I don't say it, so why should u.
Because I'm singing a song, because I'm imitating a certain character, because I'm quoting someone.
Whew chile how unbecoming of university students and faculty who call themselves scholars.
Arielle N, I agree
EXACTLY.
Europeans have no kind of insight to walk in a black person's shoes
And never will and doesn't give a hill of beans to what's going on in this planet. When it comes to nonwhite
@CrazySicily your kind are full of jealousy, ignorance, he called himself an educator, he's a bag of joke
@CrazySicily your kind go all over the saying to much people on this earth. Who made pink people God,
With your superiority complex. The weakest link.
Okay, I've been to two colleges and one university and I have never had a teacher like him for sociology. I wish I had it would have been a good addition to critical thinking.
I think anything that is or becomes a touchy subjective for any certain person should take empathy into consideration and just avoid it. It’s just a touchy subject and it can be refrained using to not make conflict regardless of who you are
That sounds like how fascism takes over.
Why are there so many non black people weighing in? Dont say it if ur not black wtf
🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹People need to confronts white people perspective of a word they stole from another black group to dehumanize another one that never heard of the word before....
Is there more to this segment? I'd like to know the class' reaction to the "no big deal" attitude from one of the students at the front.
A N PASS DOES NOT EXIST!!!!
If an Indian decent feels comfortable using the N-Word how easy is it for the Indian to use other ethic derogatory words?
The word has no power, but it’s the history of the word that matters. If your ancestors were not part of that history of slavery then it’s simple... never feel comfortable disrespecting that culture of people.
We were part of slavery thou
It's easy to feel comfortable not respecting a culture that engenders no respect.
If your one Black friend tells you it is ok to say the N-word, please understand he speaks ONLY FOR HIMSELF not for all Black ppl. I don't know your friend nor do I care about his wishes. Say it but don't call the police when you receive the reaction...
if black people are so offended by people using it, then why are they using it all the time and surprised when other people start saying it? what did you think was gonna happen? you don’t have more rights than other people
I understand everyones point, but he's there to teach not create anger or discord. His students need to be able to communicate and educate each other even in their differences. If not done correctly point will get lost in anger.
I like the black guy's question in the end, like why do non-black people feel the need to say it?? just... don't say it, if you slip up in a song i'll forgive that but don't use it in your vernacular.
Say it, when appropriate - with hard R, only because it fits ( acting like it).
Why do they got them up here answering peoples questions at the end 😂
Just refrain from it because you might end up with a wrong person
He hears the word it is a double standard.
In my humble opinion, I think that it is wrong and racist to tell someone that they can or cant do something because of the color of their skin.
Don't argue with these ppl.. it's clear they've never respected us and still don't.. but I know it's BS cuz whites/Hispanics and other foreigners don't walk up to blacks on the streets and use the N word, they're arguing to use it in private or comfortabley with friends even though they know it's offensive.
THERE IS NO CONTEXT AND IT SHOULD NOT BE USED BY ANYONE!!! WTF
It would have been nice if the teacher had knowledge of the word cuz the history behind the word is totally different...NEGUS, NEGAS....look it up!!! an try this class again. This should have been way more constructive.
I just made a similar comment. Being that we know the truth of the word shouldn't we allow white people to use the word as well?
@@halfurbanhalfsuburban8219 I cant say I'd agree on the sole point of the fact..the way its said an intended here in amerikkka is ment as a derogatory statement as a slap in the face to the actual meaning...so to me any way they say it is wrong..
It’s not okay plus The n-Pass or card DOESNT WORK
These black Americans feels so entitled to their "right and privilege" to this word. Their criteria is hilarious, if you're black you can't say it because your ancestors never lived through it. Well how amount African immigrants, how about adopted black people that grew up with white families and in white communities? Isn't that descrimination by itself?
that word should never be normal
This teacher gets on my nerves. He always has POC not white people .
Why don't the professor ask white people why they say the N word in a bad manner to black people.
Black people need to check these people saying the N word outta pocket like they used to
What why are there non-black people talking about it when it should be black people educating..
2:00 I’ve never seen hoops that fucking big
People dont understand that depending on your geographic location in the us and you age demographic it may be more accepted but black culture does not necessarily follow the rules of white culture which is what America is based on.
Just don’t say it. Have black ppl talk about this not these kids.
the camera guy...
He just understanding perspective culture
Jigaboo John ohhh your a racist troll. Make sense so no point in continuing the conversation. Bless you thou
0:39 he talks really cute aaaw
I'm middle eastern first time I heard N bomb was while I was watching this video and I thought it meant nitrogen bomb🚶♂️🚶♂️😓
Did a middle eastern really tell a white kid it's okay to say it around his friends??
NO ONE should use that word because it has a lot of pain behind it. Black people that refer to each other as that word are disrespectful to the many blacks, (particularly slaves) that fought and died for us to have freedom. That word was the last thing many blacks heard before being LYNCHED!! Blacks that use the word are only justifying what the oppressors said that blacks were....which is ignorant.
Are we just going to ignore that girls giant earrings at 2:14
if you meant to say it in a bad way as any other words, then you should to take offense from it as you would any other words. it's all about context. if I am told there are words I can't use just cause the color of my skin, I tell them that is racist and I'm sorry they want to continue living a racist lifestyle, but believe if even 1 skin color is "allowed" to use certain words than everyone can. either everyone can use the words or nobody can. context context context
The man just using experiments
Black people here are mad about them using it, but you guys are using every fucking day, why not stop using it for good, and I'm so-called Black.
Wow. You would never hear white people in the UK use that word which is why I don't get why black people love it so much. I've bought rap music but not anymore, as its all you hear.
Why do Latino's think there not white. The Spanish & Portuguese explorers enslaved Africans.
Yikes! This whole convo is cringe worthy. Nothing wrong with getting different perspectives, but to not have at least one black person on the "panel" was counterproductive.
Thank you brother 1906
This professor is biased.
Like his sitcom
Its only a 7 minute clip. We don't know if black people said anything
Full class lecture link is in the description =)
UMMMM N-word can only be express by other Black people. Black people NEVER say -er always -a.
so you have nonblack kids leading the conversation. if you aint black, dont say it. er or a at the end it isnt for you to use. we embraced the word and reinvented it as a term of endearment and disassociated the negative connotation previously attributed to it. Now that we made it culture cool everyone else wants to use it.
That black dude at the ended wanted to sound smart and emarass that Latino lmao. "desire to say the word"? Give me a break, who has a desire to say a certain specific word? Lmao
Its just word guys calm down in africa amd middle east amd latin america people are chopping each other and killing each other in ruthless wars and we westerners complain about a word!!??? Laughable
It's not just a word. it represents something bigger when you consider how African people have been portrayed in modern times. it has something to do with the first Christain church and it's teachers. Check the Bible Acts 13.
Can anyone tell what is N word
This was a great opportunity missed ! It was hard to watch only one of my people stood up and asked a question about the desire to use the N word. What happened?
I’m an East African who has Iraqis and Afghans and Indians friends in Canada and they always say it but in a cultural way like hip hop or greeting
Everything is a context in my opinion
He is not white so he can say it and not get punch
Am African and black I haven't said the n word in my life but also nobody has call me that. And if they did I wouldn't have much fuss about it I think It's more of a cultural(AA culture) thing now days like I see other race other than Black said in videos and stuff if it's so bad even a mix person shouldn't say it really. Even though a white person Saying it sound weird 🤣. And it's true in North America they say it alot but it mean different thing I guess.
Growing up in Miami it was always said. Even black people say it to hispanics and whites. Not saying it's right, but in South Florida it was said fribously around me, with no racial connotation behind it. More like "bro".
Why they have 2 use it ? .I dont care wen some1 use the N word, cuz it a word.We shouldnt be offended by a word, why gives them powers .We have Fam in England, which is good,we use 2 have blood all mean friend,i uses man, wats up man,Cuz,Fam,Gangsta.I dont use the N word.
Omg not one person can articulate themselves properly in all of his videos
No one should use the word
Especially a non-black person
Period
Black people used the N-word to take power away from the word
But the context that the word is being used in now isnt the same as those who flipped the context of this word
So because of this no one should be using the N-word
This word has traveled around the globe and is being thrown around cavalierly as if my ancestors weren’t beat, raped, murdered, hung, and treat it as if they weren't human
So no one including black people should be using this word
I know for a fact anyone outside of black people
(Even if you’re raping a song) wouldn’t get a pass to use this word
So, I suggest you don’t say it
Black people should either stop using the word or allow everyone to use the word especially considering the original word was negus meaning KING.
😂 it’s start bla bla bla
Oops it’s in the bibles text over 2,000 years ago
6:40
What in the hell?
Someone stop them lol
Nobody, should use the N word!!!
You basically repeating what the slave owners referred to blacks....!!!
Horrible thinking
where are the black people , this topic would’ve been better honestly. teach , could you next time do better with your selections ? nothing was proven here using non african americans or people who aren’t even effected by the word.
“Wasn’t a big deal” but you know it was around “slavery time”
Smh sad
🤦🏽♀️🚪🚪🚶🏾♀️🚶🏾♀️
But now i am going to say something, most people don't want to hear, if you dont like a word, dont use it, example dont tell the people around its not ok to say the N word all the while you are talking with your friends calling them this word you dont like , by demonstrating its ok to use it by you !! Makes one look like a hypocrite!!!
No it doesn't. Do you go up to a police officer or your new boss and say what's up bro? Or wbat about going up to a Jewish guy and saying what's up Jew? I'm assuming you won't if you do you some issues and probably need to see a therapist. It's called in group talk, something that is shared amongst a certin group which in this case is black people.
"the minority people say it" no sir. The BLACK people say it. Miss me with all of that
If it's okay for a black person to say it then it should be okay for whites to say it
It depends on how you use it if you have blacks friends and joke alot and you use it they might not care but if.
If certain colors of people aren't allowed to sing a song, that's more discriminatory than if they were to not skip over a word.
it's a racial slur...
@@beyonceschild So then stop saying it in your music
@@zachcam1918 My comment was deleted but i'll say it again.
I don't say the n-word, nor do i listen to music with the n-word in it. The Black people who don't use that word (90% of us) shouldn't be forced to be called a racial slur by non-blacks just so they can feel special and cool. If you say the n-word in any variety I will just assume you're a racist as you are using a racial slur against me.
@@beyonceschild 2 months of silence lol
