One of the things I think people don't give George Lucas credit for with the prequels is that he crafted a story where we KNOW the outcome... we KNOW how it would end... but we still found ourselves rooting for Anakin to do the right thing, rooting for him to come away from the dark side... And it still hurt us when Anakin fell. We knew it was coming, but it still hurt. A masterfully crafted tragedy is what George Lucas created with the prequels

    • @rhuwyn
      @rhuwyn Před rokem +4

It would have been so much better if Lucas had just stuck to the big picture and let others do the writing. All the elements are there for Anakin's turning to the dark side to be not only believable, but for us to feel like he is in the right for doing so. But, the writing just wasn't quite there and it just wasn't quite believable. We really needed to see more of the Jedi council's ineffectiveness through Anakin's eyes. The new show that's out about how Count Dooku turned to the dark side does a much better job telling the story of someone who rationalize that between the corrupt senate and the ineffective jedi that something drastic needed to be done.

@@GODCONVOYPRIME I've seen it. I didn't form my opinion based on what critics said, and I won't change it based on what Lucas said. The bottom line for me is the prequels most important job was telling Darth Vader's origin story, and while I love all the worldbuilding and the high level stuff macro stuff he just really sucks at character development. What is pictured in the movies isn't enough to make a truely good person do what Anakin did. It's just not believable. Nor is Padme and Anakin's romanace. Lucas did clarify that Anakin being awkward was intended, but he didn't provide any alternative reason for Padme really falling for Anakin.

Another thing is that unlike the sequel trilogy, which rehashed so much from the OT, the prequels have a totally new story structure, new characters (mostly), new locations, a different type of conflict. You can't really compare them to the OT.

@@transformersrevenge9 you totally can, there are millions of OT parallels and references in the PT, but the ST is just an awful imitation, a failure of a copy.

I heard someone else make this observation before, so this is not my original thought. We normally think of Star Wars as being just a story of fathers and sons, which the original trilogy certainly is. The story of Anakin and Luke, their life parallels, and Luke's struggle not to go down the path his father did. The original trilogy shows us the ways Luke and Anakin are similar, and the father's eventual redemption through his son. But there's also an interesting contrast that only becomes apparent with the prequels. Another way to look at it, in terms of personalities, is that Leia is the child who actually takes after her father more. She is more like Anakin; headstrong, precocious, confident, impatient, and with a fierce yearning for justice. Luke, on the other hand, is truly his mother's son in many ways. He has Padme's kindness and selflessness, and most importantly, her ability to see the good in people. Padme's dying words take on special significance when viewed this way. That it's his mother's goodness in Luke-and the strength of Padme's love which Luke has inherited-by which he ultimately saves his father and fulfills the prophecy of the Force.

It’s funny: In Episode 2, Anakin said being around Padme was intoxicating.
Here, we see him completely intoxicated with his new abilities, having wiped out the Jedi Order (who oppressed him for over a decade and only sort of deserved it) and the Trade Federation (who went after his wife and mostly deserved it) all within a matter of hours. So when Padme showed up with Obi-Wan, of course his newfound addiction would flare up: two more bodies to add to his count. Notice the longer he fights Obi-Wan, the more sunken his eyes get, like an addict.
Obi-Wan may have gained the high ground but Anakin was on an entirely different “high” ground.

Dammit! I've got Notifications turned on for you, and didn't get one when this dropped. >.<
Alright.... before we even get started here.... I have to say something (no, not related to notifications): Do yourself a big favor and watch the Clone Wars animated show followed by The Bad Batch (animated as well) at some point. It's time consuming, yes, but it also sets up (or will explain) a LOT of what you're going to see later on. I don't know the series well enough to point out specific episodes to make it faster, maybe someone else who reads this DOES know that show well enough. I know many major plot points and references, but I can't cite them off the top of my head (yet). Also, from here, you should watch (in timeline order): Solo (A Star Wars Story), Obi-Wan Kenobi (live action series), Andor (live action series), Rebels (animated series), Rogue One, then re-watch Episodes IV, V, and VI (because you'll have a much greater context of the events going on), The Mandalorian (seasons 1 & 2), The Book of Boba Fett, THEN go on to the Sequel Trilogy.
One last thing which will probably get mentioned/asked during the movie: It takes place over the course of several months, as you can tell by the size of Padme's belly. She's just barely showing at the beginning, and gives birth by the end. We can assume a normal 9 month gestation period.
    Alright, on with it!
7:20 - Gooooood! Gooooooooooood! Let the HATE flow through you!! (couldn't resist)
12:00 - King Gar, I'm going to pause for a moment, to relate something personal about me. My first wife died from Ovarian Cancer in 2006. She battled it for 3 years, but it finally took her. With that out there, do know that I fully understand Anakin's motivations here. Absolutely desperate to save Padme', and Yoda's advice a bit later just comes off as hollow, once you're actually IN Anakin's place. The "Letting Go" never really happens, even once you manage to figure out how to "keep living" after the loss. I won't get wordy about it right now, but suffice it to say that I am remarried without any guilt about it, because I know that's what my first wife wanted.
13:43 - As I was telling someone earlier, Palpatine is playing chess on a level most people don't recognize. By putting Anakin on the Jedi Council as his "personal representative", he's not only moving a valued piece into a strategic location, BUT, he also knows that the Jedi Council will not react well to this appointment. They won't "block it", per se', but they will also cause Anakin to lose more (!) trust in them by how they treat him (not grant him the rank of Jedi Master). Palpatine is sowing the seeds of mistrust on both sides.
14:54 - KEY piece of information here, which is partly explored in some of the written "canon" materials (books and comics), but also shown in the Clone Wars animated series (which is also canon, and believe me, I thought it was "just for kids" until I watched it). Remember at the end of Episode I, when Palpatine said to Anakin, "And you, young Skywalker, we will follow your career with great interest!". There's some backstory there, as well... maybe I could e-mail you about it?
15:46 - King Gar would be great at CinemaSins **DING** (either you get that, or you don't)
16:02 - He's feeding Anakin's ego. Obi-Wan said to Anakin in Episode II "If you practiced your saber technique as much as you practice your wit, you'd rival Master Yoda as a swordsman" to which Anakin replied "I thought I already did...."
16:56 - Darth Plagueis "Could use the Force to influence the Midichlorians to create life..." Think back.... Qui-Gon asked Shmi who Anakin's father was.... "There was no father." 17:21 - Yes. That is confirmed in the Darth Plagueis novel. Now, it's still conjecture if Plagueis and/or Sidious directly created Anakin, or if his creation was The Force responding to them trying to manipulate it in such a way. However, at least one of the comic books illustrated Sidious manipulating Anakin while he was still a fetus.
18:21 - VERY subtle detail here: Notice, Anakin is standing in the shadows/darkness, while Obi-Wan is standing in the light. This was not done by accident.
19:23 - No, General Grievous is still overmatched. He's a cyborg, who never had Force abilities to start with. He's stripped away so much of his original biological body and replaced it with droid parts, that even IF he was originally Force sensitive, he wouldn't be now. He only has a few organs left of his original body. So, even though he's been trained in how to use lightsabers, and has 4 of them to start with, Obi-Wan still has The Force as his ally, and a powerful ally it is.
20:12 - The thing is, Palpatine is 100% correct here. He's telling Anakin things that he already knows. Remember, as a Jedi, Anakin can sense the emotions of those around him, and he's been fairly close to the Jedi Council since his appointment to it. He could sense the doubt/mistrust, especially from Mace Windu.
20:40 - Before we go on.... let me say this: Those of us who grew up on the Original Trilogy, and all of what that era (late 70s until the mid '80s), already knew the Emperor's name. It had been revealed in books and comics (most of which have been de-canonized since Disney took over). The Prequel Trilogy didn't come along until 1999 and into the early 2000s. So, this wasn't much of a reveal to us. However, I do enjoy the fact that younger/newer fans did NOT have that information (despite having the internet (which we did NOT have back then) at your disposal)... because in that, there is "balance". =D
20:09 - Notice, Palpatine turns his back to Anakin. He KNOWS Anakin will not strike him down. Had he not been so close to him, maybe he would have.
22:45 - Remember what Anakin said, "I will soon learn the truth of all this." That line comes into sharp focus right here.... Mace telling him, "I sense a great deal of confusion in you." and most importantly, "If what you've told me is true, you will have gained my trust." **IF** what you told me is true.... IF!
23:10 - This is a scene where it's good that you have closed captioning on. Palpatine's voice can barely be heard (even when it was in the theaters). "You *DO* know that if they Jedi destroy me, *ANY* chance of saving her, will be lost." Again, playing to Anakin's fears of losing Padme'. I'll reiterate, having been in Anakin's boots, I completely understand where his head is at. Also, as they look out towards each other, Anakin can feel/see Padme' through The Force, which only compounds what Palpatine said to him through The Force. I honestly can't say I'd do anything different than what he did.
24:13 - This leap with the scream is in fact a "Dark Side ability", which is meant to terrify/freeze an opponent. In this case, it works. Anakin has also used this ability during the Clone Wars, but I won't say when/where/against who.
24:40 - Okay, something you need to know about Mace Windu here (yes, I paused again). Also, understand that this is "in universe" explanations about him and his lightsaber (the "our reality" is a bit more "boring", but still kinda funny): Mace is one of the VERY rare Jedi who is able to channel the Dark Side of The Force, without succumbing to it. This is why his lightsaber is purple in colour (red + blue = purple). Also, he has developed his own particular style of dueling called "Vapad", which allows him to search for his opponent's "shatterpoint" (biggest weakness). He is able to draw in the Dark Side, which Palpatine is using also, to seek out his weakness, while still not "falling to the Dark Side" himself. It's also why he didn't "freeze" when Palpatine used Force Scream at the start of the duel. (Multiple fun facts here: Samuel L. Jackson requested that George Lucas give him a purple lightsaber, so that in wide shots, he'd know where he was on screen. Lucas literally gave it to him, and concocted a neat backstory to explain why he was the only Jedi with a purple lightsaber).
25:15 - Notice, when Anakin walked in, Palpatine had already lost his lightsaber, and Anakin only saw Mace standing over him with his blade out. ("You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view" - Obi-Wan Kenobi)
27:17 - Yep. One of the biggest tragedies ever written.
30:40 - "From a certain point of view"

    • @IggyStardust1967
      @IggyStardust1967 Před rokem +1

Had to split the reply in two....
32:48 - Understand something here... Padme's only now realizing that Obi-Wan stowed away on her ship. Anakin believes that she DID know he was aboard, and that she willingly brought Kenobi there to kill him. At this point, she doesn't have a chance to explain that he snuck aboard her ship, and actually blames herself (to a point) for bringing him there (falling for such a trick). Of course, Anakin, channeling the Dark Side, jumps to conclusions and reacts instantly.
34:57 - Both legs AND his left arm.
35:37 - Actually, there are a few other remaining Jedi, but Obi-Wan and Yoda are the only ones we see in the movies. Others can be found in other materials (books, tv shows, comics)... but yeah, the order went from over 10,000 strong, to less than 100 in the course of a day.
36:00 - The ONLY real question that has never been answered to anyone's satisfaction: How did NO ONE know Padme' was carrying twins? Did she not get seen by even a single doctor during her pregnancy?!
36:30 - As Vader's mask goes on, watch his mouth closely. It's barely noticeable, but the rumour is that a line was deleted (muted) where he cried out "Padme', help me!" You can see his mouth move a little, but to my knowledge, no footage with that audio exists anywhere. So treat it as a rumour.
37:55 - Notice as Vader cries out, "NOOOOOOOO!" the smile on Palpatine's face. There is a theory out there that Palpatine used the Dark Side of The Force to drain Padme's life force, to enable Vader to live through the trauma of being burned alive, the surgeries to give him new mechanical limbs, until the suit could take over sustaining his life. Also, Vader was given NO anesthesia or pain meds during that surgery. This was all done to strengthen his connection to the Dark Side.
38:30 - It's true. There is a story arc during the Clone Wars animated series that details this. Qui-Gon Jinn was the first "modern era" Jedi to learn this power. Since you've already seen the Original Trilogy, you already know that both Obi-Wan and Yoda learn this power. Also, I can tell you now that this scene has happened, that it was Obi-Wan who taught it to Anakin Skywalker (as he was redeemed by Luke in Return of the Jedi) while he lay dying. That is how those three Force Ghosts were able to appear to Luke at the end of that movie.
38:43 - Padme's funeral. A small detail to notice here: She still looks pregnant. This was done on purpose, so that both Vader and Palpatine (through his spies on Naboo) would believe that she died prior to giving birth to Anakin's child(ren).
Right... on to your final thoughts.
40:35 - You're right. Absolutely spot on. People DO process tragedy differently. Also, different tragedies are processed differently. I will say that those of us who have lived through a great many tragedies (mine started at birth, if I'm honest), tend to use humour (dark humour, I should add) to help cope with them.
As for watching something "more light hearted", next.... Obviously, I won't tell you NOT to watch episode VI again right away, but I'd suggest holding off, for right now. Track down the movie "Fanboys", if you can. It's Star Wars related, but takes place in our world. It has its "dramatic" moments, but overall, has a story that will give you some laughs. While I understand how you feel right now, you're going to need to learn to cope with tragic moments in Star Wars. But also remember, there is poetry in how they rhyme. The movies, the shows, all of it. You're going to run into that a lot in this franchise, but the overall message *IS* that there is always hope. You may not see it right away, and it may even take a long time before you do see it, but it balances out.
I can see that this movie hit you pretty hard, but also, it was supposed to. You've literally just witnessed the downfall of someone who was supposed to be a savior. Not because he was inherently evil with his intent, but because he LOVED someone, and was manipulated by someone who actually was the personification of evil.
Yes, you ARE part of the fandom now. Those of us who aren't of the "toxic nature" welcome you! May The Force Be With You, Always!

As for Order 66, most of the Jedi deserved it after reading many books and watching The Clone Wars, I don't want to cry, I just smile.
Jedi should never join this war, they should help the weakest. Instead, they committed war crimes and became servants and tools of politicians, they fought for the Republic and died for the Republic.

Anakin’s story can be seen as a ‘Jesus-like’ parallel, in this sense:
-An unbelievably huge Evil needs to be gotten rid of. (In the Star Wars universe, it’s Palpatine and the Sith. In the world we know, it’s the evils of mankind).
-An Unseen Power acts by guiding events behind the scenes. (In the Star Wars universe, Anakin is immaculately conceived. In our world, according to Christianity, Jesus is immaculately conceived by G-d).
-A very special being is summoned forth, to undergo sacrifice and death, to save the universe (in the Star Wars universe, Anakin •• HAS TO •• become Vader - because, the only way that Palpatine can be tossed down that abyss in Episode VI, is that Palpatine gets Vader as an apprentice - an apprentice whom Palpatine THINKS is ‘safe’, but who in actuality has a ‘weakness’ for family (Luke, in Episode VI).
-There is reason to think that The Force planned the events to take down Palpatine from the very beginning: Anakin was born in the Outer Rim, where he wouldn’t be detected by the Jedi. And hence, ‘allowed’ to grow up as a ‘normal human’ with normal human attachments to other people. That’s what The Force wanted and needed: A ‘wild-card Jedi’ that would be the perfect ‘bait’ for Palpatine to snap at, laying a kind of trap for Palpatine that is ‘sprung’ in Episode VI.
This is a reframe - a different way of looking at the events of Episodes I thru VI, and there’s no requirement for people to view it this way. But, I think it helps.

Agreed, I also think that Anakin was meant to clear the board by destroying the previous Jedi (and their Order) and the Republic so that a better Jedi Order (Luke’s Order in Star Wars Legnds) and a new Republic would emerge after the fall of the Empire. The previous Jedi Order was too ossified by it’s own dogma to change, and the Republic was too corrupt.

After the drama and emotion of Ep.3, I usually suggest people watch "Solo: A Star Wars Story" next. It's a more fun, lighthearted adventure/buddy comedy/heist movie. It comes next in the timeline. Then comes the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show. Then it's back to more drama with "Rogue One: A Star Wars story" which leads right into Ep.4.
Keep in mind that the sequels are NOT George Lucas's story. In fact, when Disney bought Star Wars from him, they actually rejected his story treatments for the sequels in favor of letting different directors make up the story of each film as they went a long, and it shows. You can leave them for last last last, since they are the last thing in the current chronology anyway.

They should have not done the whole Anakin as a child thing and made all 3 movies about adult Anakin slowly turning to the Darkside and sabotaging the Jedi. How is it a slow turn. Anakin was 9 when he first met palpatine, who greeted them with open arms and was worried about Anakin's future wife
Compare that to when he met the jedi who told him he was wrong for missing his mother which is a very human thing to do. From day one of Anakin being on Coruscant he already recognises which of these two forces will look after him better
Even in ep2 when Anakin gets his first assignment, he goes straight to palpatine who tells him to trust his instincts which leads Anakin back to Tatooine and a tuskan massacre
I doubt I need to mention palpatines effects in ep3 but as you can see Anakin has been following the words of Palpatine for just as long as the jedi, so his turn was growing over 13 years

That is stupid and you know it. Even in the Clone Wars he was being all buddy buddy with Ahsoka and joking with her and the next minute he was a Sith Lord. Even Marsha Lucas agrees with me. She said it in an interview. It should have been a gradual turn to evil and eventually got to the point where he was secretly working against the Jedi and betraying them and dismantling the Jedi Order over a period of time. Even if Anakin wanted to stop Windu from killing Palpatine so he could save Padme, that doesn't mean he would just all of a sudden completely turn himself over to evil and be completely fine with slaughtering innocent children. He went from wanting to be on the Jedi Council to saying he wanted to rule the galaxy like within minutes. It did not feel natural. He never mentioned wanting to rule the galaxy ever in all 3 movies and simply wanting to save Padme made him want to rule the galaxy? Stupid. It was not good writing at all. I think Lucas cared more about making different looking space ships than writing a good script. That's just my opinion.

Those stories would've been perfect for the sequel trilogy, but they decided that the shit show they gave us was going to be much more commercially successful. "How to destroy a franchise" that's what it's all about. Now the Star Wars franchise is all but destroyed.
