    ✵✵✵✵✵What are white dwarfs? (Astronomy)
    White dwarfs are dead stars that continue to glow because of heat, not nuclear fusion. Most stars in our universe will end up as a white dwarf star. Join us to learn how white dwarfs are made, what they’re like, how long they’ll shine, and how astronomers detect them.

    I would like to thank you guys for your really hard work on this channel! I can't imagine how long it takes to create just one video like this one! Two months? More? To search, organise the material, to record (and all the re-recordings!!! hehe), to edit and finally publish... GOSH!
    Do you guys know how much you're helping those interested in these matters? It is priceless, indeed! Things we're carrying here and there we pass from generation to generation, and... Well, I got a bit excited!
    Anyway!
    Thank you very much for sharing such knowledge in such a way!

      Your kind message means so much to us. So nice to meet someone else who loves learning and teaching.
      We do work hard on our videos - we love this material, and we learned from such excellent teachers over the years. We really want to make mini educational movies that will stand the test of time! So many people want to learn but don't have the opportunity. But CZcams and other platforms can change all that!
      We visited your channel and subscribed. Your Norwegian class via Skype is a great idea!
      Everyone, check this out: czcams.com/video/CeBfJc4NpWY/video.html

    • @ThiagoOdy
      @ThiagoOdy Před 8 lety

      Hi there!
      WOW! When I read it I was like, speechless!
      I am very glad indeed to know you visited my channel as well that you recommended my classes here!
      Serious!
      And about your ideal with Socratica; you said exactly what I think!
      To keep it in mind, that so many of us truly want to learn about these themes: philosophy, astronomy, languages, etc (as you noticed I am one of them), but simply don't have any reference or they are unreliable. You, with this channel, are not only giving us these references but also teaching us A LOT through your videos!
      So once again, thank you very much!
      You know, actually I try to do the same with my videos (despite the fact they are all basically in portuguese, so... sorry), in which I talk mainly about the perception of reality, what is reality, consciousness and spirituality (regarding some eastern philosophies and norse mythology), without dictating anything, obviously, in an attempt to help those who have been asking me for some kind of guidance in a Facebook page of mine, as well personally.
      Do you have any Facebook profile/page? Because recently I started an amateur album on it in which I publish some photos I've been taken of the night sky, where I explain about the constellations, the stars, planets, clusters, etc... Maybe you would like!
      Peace!

      @@Socratica Einstein never nearly understood TIME, E=MC2, F=ma, gravity, or ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy.
      He was, in fact, a total weasel.
      c2 represents a dimension ON BALANCE, as E=MC2 IS F=ma in accordance with the following:
      UNDERSTANDING THE ULTIMATE, BALANCED, TOP DOWN, AND CLEAR MATHEMATICAL UNIFICATION OF ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy AND gravity, AS E=MC2 IS CLEARLY F=ma:
      The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. E=MC2 IS F=ma, AS this proves the term c4 from Einstein's field equations. SO, ON BALANCE, this proves the fourth dimension. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy !!!
      TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE, AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. INDEED, TIME dilation ULTIMATELY proves ON BALANCE that E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy.
      Gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy are linked AND BALANCED opposites, AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity; AS gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE; AS GRAVITATIONAL force/ENERGY IS proportional to (or BALANCED with/as) inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy.
      E=mC2 IS CLEARLY F=ma. This NECESSARILY represents, INVOLVES, AND DESCRIBES what is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy !!!

      Photons however are produced in the cores during Nuclear Fusion and are often referred to as Light carrying Packets.

    Thanks but some small corrections would be needed:
    0:53 actually, the fusion in the first step of a star evolution merges 4 H atoms, not 2, into 1 He
    1:25 it doesn't depend on the initial mass of the star but on the mass. Imagine a small start merging later in life with another and thus increasing its current mass but not the initial smaller mass. Which mass dictates its evolution?
    2:35 I would avoid using here "dark matter" as it usually means something else entirely.

    2 identical particles cannot occupy the same space if they are Fermions, like electrons in white dwarfs undergo degenerate pressure. Bosons occupy the same space and they are identical to each other. Be careful with this fundamental difference.
    So the Pauli exclusion principle is exclusive to Fermions.
    Great little video as usual.

    great video, I love the topic of astronomy...
    but what is the difrence between a super nova and a hyper nova?
    prehaps a cool idea for a new video: hyper nova's

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  Před 8 lety +2

      This would be a great video! Hypernovas (aka 'collapsars') are really fascinating. A lot of the things in astronomy take millions of years to unfold, but in the case of hypernovae, everything happens on the order of seconds! We would probably have to show a hypernova unfolding in slow-motion in order to have time to point out all the cool things happening.

    White dwarves need a support group, where they can get together and express their concerns, share their experiences, and reassure each other that they are not alone in the universe.

      But… Ultimately, with enough and sufficient passing of time, white dwarfs will be alone. Trillions of year’s from now white dwarf stars and black holes will be the last remaining objects in the cosmos. So yea they will be extremely and completely all alone adrift through the cosmos to live and live and live what will surely seem like an eternity

    The level of quality in this videos ,for a channel that is below 50k subs, is amazing. You guys are giving us premium content, better than some channels that have close to 1mil subs (no namedrops). Keep up the good work and i hope you guys grow faster than this beacuse you deserve it!!!
    P.S. Im interested in what kind of background do you have in science, and how much time does it take to research for 1 vid? Thank you in advance!

      Your comment really put a smile on our faces! We do work very hard on each video - we usually write scripts over the course of several weeks, and they go through several rounds of fact-checking. Then we film and edit the videos.
      We're a small team at Socratica, and most of the writing is done by our founders, who both got their undergrad degrees at Caltech. Michael Harrison is a mathematician who is also a programmer (former Googler) and loves astronomy. Kimberly Hatch Harrison is a molecular biologist, who was a scientist for many years, and then taught Chemistry and Biology. She also holds a degree in English Literature. So we all take turns writing, filming, and editing.
      We sure hope we continue to grow. Everyone - share our videos! Tell your friends who blog about STEM! We've got to get the word out. Meanwhile, we'll keep making videos. :)

      Chipsy Chips You are so welcome! Yes, we're hoping that gradually we will grow large enough to be self-sustaining. In the meantime, we need to pace ourselves. It's also helping that we are starting to get some supporters on Patreon. Every bit helps!
      We'd love to hear what topics you are most interested in - we're writing and filming more videos all the time...

      Socratica Well my passion is astronomy (that's why I'm studying physics) and I would love to see more videos on that, but some that explain a bit more complicated phenomena (but that is just me :) ). But right now I am really enjoying your abstract algebra series, because I need it for my college. So more math and astronomy would be perfect if you ask me, and i think most people enjoy to watch those videos as well. Oh and please, no matter how big you get (i hope its BIG), don't get lazy and don't feel pressured to put out more and more videos. Quality before quantity. Some of the best channels out here are those that don't care about quantity of their videos, but for their quality. And of course there are a lot of examples where channels disregarded quality of their videos just so they could pump out more of them, and that was there doom. I hope you choose former :D

    • @Socratica
      @Socratica  Před 7 lety

      Chipsy Chips More astronomy and abstract algebra on the way for sure!
      We so agree about your "quality vs. quantity" point. We're always trying to make videos that we would have loved to have when we were students. We do get pressure all the time to make more videos - faster/cheaper - but we have standards we really are determined to keep up.
      It's a real pleasure chatting with you! Best of luck with your studies. :)
