We got some before we moved for the same purpose but they came in handy while we were moving. I had one in the big moving truck while my wife was following me and giving directions. They were life savers.
Oh cool, thats an idea!
My wife, son, daughter, and myself use GMRS radios to stay in touch with the current stay at home orders because of the virus. I am in the middle of them so my daughter is 20 miles away and my son 8 miles but he has more obstructions. We were already licensed ham operators and have lots of stuff to make it work. But what actually worked is there are GMRS repeaters around the area that help boost our signals to the next one. We have some property with a high point and put together a cheap repeater setup that is solar/wind powered. You might look at doing something like that if you have a high point on the property. Lots of great videos online showing how to set one up. As a side note, we have small flare guns and marine hand held flares we use for those "I need help now" situations as well as air horns. We set up a series of signals we use to get each others attention when the radios are having issues.
They are using Canada's version of GMRS which is basically the same as FRS in the US. There's a 0.5w or 2w limit depending on channel, radios must have fixed antennas and repeaters are not allowed. The only real difference between GMRS in Canada vs FRS in the US is they are allowed wideband on the 2W channels.
great test and review of these walkie talkies !!
Thanks, I think they are going to work out well on the property.
Just bought a set of Motorola T6 hundreds getting ready to do a test on that but I think these radios work better house in like Arizona flat spaces
Rings off for satry also.. the lid wilm pop if the food loses seal and goes bad in storage. Just letting you know
You said it right. :-) Hubby works with computers and Uniden is a big brand with techy stuff. Don't know anything about this product, though.
Well thats good to know! Thanks :)
Dont know if makes a difference but when I drive by Trenton my car radio gets a lot of interference, maybe from the base not sure
I think that definitely could be a factor! Good point :)
Hey man FYI Google Gilmour crt and see how fast this comes up...I would put Google into satelite mode so street names don't show+gives better view of how much stuff was between the radios
you got 2 miles that's it your running 2 watts
Line of sight, atmospherics, barriers (trees, hills, buildings), power lines, etc., will all conspire to work against the optimal distance. On a farm they should work fine.
You got that right!
All GMRS radios output capability drops in urban areas and will be lucky to get a mile or two. Once in rural environment, the capacity will greatly improve.
Thanks, much appreciated.
ALL G M R S channels put you in to a tower that will give you a 20 mile range on a single tower and requires a G M R S license to use I have one your radio need's tuning to do that
Cool gear! If they work ok close to each other but not far away, they might be a little out of tune. Arrange a signal set, using that background beep, for an emergency. Sort of like Morse, but just a basic set of code meanings. Like 3 beeps means dinner is ready. For speed, make a number code set like the law enforcement radio codes. When you get a Ham Radio, let me know! :-) Cheers!
Will do! You must have one eh? :)
No, I don't. I used to work on them, when I was in the electronics program. LF would reach there, but I don't need anything like that now. We could chat in dual streams, if it was needed, but it would just be a tech nerd's story for us. :) I use XSplit Broadcaster, if you want to try it. Cheers!
Oh nice :)
I have one my sister has one we talk on each side of the city of Dawson
I don't have radios but would be nice to have
Ya, we think they are going to come in handy for sure!
I don't know how many channels your walkie talkies have, but you should test each one and see which one has a better quality. plus you are on a military base, and their communication systems , may be interferring
If you out in the open those radios wood work real good plus you need a license to operate those gmrs radios
We don't need a licence here to use the radios, and they work great out here in the woods.
Can they work with other radio brands ? If yes, please send me link to tutorial or something.. Length of battery life too ? How long it charges till full ?
Sorry, but I am not sure if they work with other brands as I have never tried. And I keep my batteries on the charger all the time. Sorry I can’t help ya out more. Maybe check their website.
The first 7 channels are FRS. Channels 8 through 22 will be GMRS and will have better range FRS.
channels 1 through 22 are F R S channels 15 through 22 are G M R S with license required
thay are repeter channels
You play Punch Buugy too! Do you also play Spadoodle? I think we should get radios too.
We play PaDiddle....when a car has a light out....is that similar to what you play? ;)
No PaDiddle is a new one we will have to tryout! Spadoodle is for yellow cars or halftons.
Oh! I have never heard of that one, will have to give that a try :)
I have a good idea for you and your friends, here in Puerto Rico we use GMRS with repeaters and every 20 miles someone has a repeater to boost the signal farther! We have repeaters installed for a total coverage of 100 miles and it works fine!...The purpose is to manage better family and emergency operations!...Work a group gather the information necessary and work it out!...Good luck!
We did that exact thing in the army , it is called a radio rebroadcast. Great idea!
That smart
Only a couple of miles out of 50 miles? These companies need to test their products inside a city too and give us those numbers too.
Ya for sure.
I told cobra that yes you can do thirty miles as the ad said but you need a license and the radio need's tuning to the tower thay told me to get lost even though I have a radio station .
so what saqy thay know every thing and I am dumie
My daughter and I have a cheap set that we take hunting with us and they'll go to about 5 Mile so you should be good to go and they are Uniden as well
Nice, thanks :)
Which model ?
Not bad for being in the city. Different channel may help. Definitely will help if yippy are away from the city and all the interference
I was kinda thinking the same thing, we will give em a better try out in the woods :)
in the city your limited by building's be tween you
You should try driving in the woods
Ya we are going to give them a better test out in the woods for sure, we were just impatient and wanted to try em out haha :)
Turbo button - Remember the old CB's with that analog s-meter? The boost button bumps you up to high power But High power on a hand held is no more than 5 watts on GMRS.... Consider this if you run low power - say 1 watt - you have to nearly triple the power output to move the s-meter 1(only one) bar say from S5 to S6 That's it! So not much of a boost! The simple math: start with 1 watt and double it to 2 watts, then 2 doulbeld to 4 watts then 4- 8 watts ( you would need 8 watts to go up 1 s-"unit" on the old s-meter. The UHF frequency and small fixed antenna on those radios will always limit the range to just a few real world miles. A good range for around town for sure, but ignore the 50 miles add on the box unless you are on a mountain top.
Thanks for the info. BTW, your sweetheart seems like dynamite to me. You'd better keep her.
How do you get 6 walkies to work together. Just bought our whole family some.
I am not sure, they would all need to have the capability to be on the same frequency / channel. It would really depend on what you bought.
thay will match place all radios on same channel and your in you can put in a security code
which will not let anyone talk to your group but thay can hear you only
The radios work fine but being inside a metal box (car) reduces the range if one radio is vertical and the other is more horizontal also degrades the performance and if you turn the squelch up that also reduces performance. With all of the above then you have concrete and steel buildings.... bang goes the distance. Out in the country you will have no problem. By the sound of things they are vhf fm radios which is ideal for your application
that is the right answer
Are these only 2 way or can you connect to other on the same channel
As far as I know they are 2-way but have never tested them with more.
yes you can
I recently got this model. I tried reaching my buddy who's about 5 miles away. They only worked for about a half mile in an urban environment.
In the mountain they suck too I stay at the farm and my friend drive away and not even 1 k. away communication was dead they ate suppose to do 40 km or even more lol
yes your radio has 2 watts of tx. power with about 2 miles or less.
Can these use AA or AAA batterys?
They take AA batteries.
and buy 2 sets of battes for each using two extra battery chargers charge all up and take the extra set with you for extra shopping you will thank me later
Use Google maps to the location your at to your home and it will tell you how many kms you are. I had the same problem I just bought the same brand and it said 30 miles but my daughter went up the hill 1.8 km and we could talk 😡 I paid $100 for mine
thay will do 2 miles or line of site only 30 miles is done by tuning your radio to a tower
get a 35.00 dollar G M R S license as I did and then you get your 30 miles
Looks like PMQs
My radios won't transmit unless to talk really close to the little mic hole. Like what the F?
It is a pmq. And that sucks, I haven't had that issue with mine.
@@MBFModernHomesteading I remember the PMQ life. Lol I was in for was in for 26yrs and I'm done now. Stay safe and thank you for your continuing service brother.
@@marcus_mayhem Right on and thanks for your service too. I actually got med released last year.
Radio is good, but a well stocked first aid kit can save your life. Hopefully you never need it
Thanks, we have a pretty good first aid kit ready to go too. We have always had it pretty stocked too. Probably pick up a few more things for it here soon though :)
Thanks.
My midland radios sucks
We need to do another review of these out on our property now.
