    Real time eye tracking is going to be a Pandora’s box for advertisers. Imagine an ad that would only play if it knew your eyes were looking at it. Can’t wait

      Don't forget the totalitarian regimes who will use this data to fuel models that predict deviancy and subversive behavior!
      It's scary. But then again even on the modern web your every move is tracked by advertisers and big corporations. Your browser has a pretty unique fingerprint that when combined with your IP or other information can reliably identify you even if you aren't logged in anywhere. Probably even if you're using a VPN (and that VPN provider will get all of that same data). That nightmare is real, and not too far off eye tracking.
      People (anyone on this website included, especially logged in users) are absolutely willing to give up privacy in return for some useful tool or enjoyable product. That is the path that tech is leading us down... for better or worse.
      I suppose there are ways to try and preserve privacy and anonymity. Encryption being a crucial part of that toolset which isn't going anywhere, but it seems like trying to stay truly anonymous will eventually present so many downsides that basically no one chooses to live that way. Even if you are able to anonymize your activity that in and of itself could constitute a social faux pas or legally dubious behavior.

There is nothing a zoom meet can't functionally achieve vs a real one. Screen sharing is actually easier in zoom vs a conference cast too. Also nobody cares about avatars in a business world. Nobody wants to be in a meeting and just wants to get in and out. Wearing VR also is uncomfortable and hurts eyes after time. It also makes drinking and snacking annoying, and this is coming from a gamer. I have colleagues who have used the quest and feel even worse about it. it kinda sucks that the main company pushing vr is such a money hungry anti-privacy conglomerate but the tech is extremely impressive and cool, to me at least. i just hope more companies or even open source projects try and dethrone meta's consumer vr dominance cause then not only will every company be forced to innovate faster to break in which will result in better hardware for people, but it will also hopefully make people less reliant on playing vr games on a device that tracks your home by a company that sells your data.

    @GoNinty Před rokem

    VR with eye tracking is already here - a friend at university used a FOVE VR headset to develop a proof of concept where a spider in the room reacts differently depending on whether you have line of sight to it. I wouldn't be surprised if this starts to rear it's head (not only for technical reasons like you mentioned here) but also integrated into gameplay in some way. It seems like it shouldn't be too difficult to integrate one inside of a mainstream mass market headset already. Much of the tracking problems traditional desktop eye trackers might encounter are a result of conditions that are more controllable when you put one inside a headset - IR light reflection on glasses, the distance of the tracker from the user or the room lighting conditions.
    Also, standard desktop eye trackers require extensive calibration for accurate tracking and they in no way provide reliable user-independent tracking without recalibration. It'll be interesting to see if placing the trackers so close to one's eyes inside of a VR headset allows for calibration to be eliminated entirely. User independence isn't really an issue for VR experiences but it'll hopefully prompt more research into passive calibration techniques that can maybe be ported over to the traditional eye tracker space.

    Interesting to see how often they talk about eye tracking, because it's one of the things I find the most eerie. Predicting your eye movements before they happen doesn't seem like just a problem to help with rendering, Facebook/Meta dealing so much with advertising makes that very important. I can only hope this technology becomes more widespread, and these breakthroughs eventually trickle down to companies whose sole profit motive is collecting personal data. It's why they have the "two tiers" for consumers and businesses, because currently it costs $400USD more if you want a Quest which DOESN'T tie you to a Meta account.
    I love this video because it is just the tech, which IS mindblowing. Technology is a tool, there is nothing wrong with any of this development, just how it's going to be used. If a company like Valve or HTC implements even a fraction of this technology, I'll be very happy. I would be way more excited to fund this kind of research when it didn't have the business practices of Meta looming over it.

Remember, the Space Race was a military endeavor to put weapons in, well, Space, and look at how that panned out. And the Rocket to Space wasn't built in a day, it was built upon failure after failure and having to build new technology to solve problems.
