    I agree with your thoughts on art. An old conversation, I had with a friend that has since passed away, came to mind while watching. This fellow was considerably older, more sophisticated and urbane that myself. He was also considered to be somewhat of a wine aficionado. So in an effort to broaden my understanding and appreciation for wine, I asked him if he could "school me" on the topic. He simply chuckled and replied, "buddy, open a bottle, let it breath and drink some of it. If it tastes good to you it is good. End of lesson." My point is that life is short. I don't have time to read books or gaze upon paintings that I don't enjoy. Imbibe those things in life that turn you on, everything else is pretense.

    I've found myself literally incapable of reading a book without looking through hundreds of reviews of it, just to see if it's worth my time ironically wasting hours of my time. And if i see a couple of poor reviews i get immediately turned off. What you said made me conscious of this terrible habit and now I'm gonna work on fixing it and giving myself the chance to experience books and artists by myself

      I do this too. I tend to value the star rating more than individual comments because with any book you're going to find someone that hated it or found it life changing. The star rating averages those people out.

    Loved this! You basically summed up all my creative process from the last year and a half. I think that falling in love with one specific author and investigate their influence was key! It's so interesting how music, writing and all kinds of arts are a mix of other people's work.

    On Point Two, something that works well for me is finding people who's aphorisms really resonate with me. This is how I discovered Voltaire and ended up given ‘Candide’ a shot and loving it. Similarly I discovered Naval Ravikant while watching a JRE clip. His thoughts on topics and aphorisms he brought up really resonated with me. I ended up buying and loving ‘The Almanack of Naval Ravikant’ and have read several books that he recommended. Finding people that you click with is so helpful because the likelihood is high that you’ll enjoy their recommended books, most of which you’d otherwise never give a chance.

    The point you made about browsing with spontaneity is something I've been yearning to do again but haven't been able to put the words to or put into action. I miss finding different kinds of media on my own, no recommendations, just hunting through shelves for interesting things. I think it's hard for me to break this habit though, my "to read" shelf on Goodreads has become too massive haha. I also feel like browsing without a plan is even harder since started working at a library. People will come in asking for recommendations in specific genres I'm not familiar with, so it's become sort of like homework to read different genres and books in different age groupings that I wouldn't pick up otherwise. I don't think this is a bad thing, I discover stuff that I never thought I'd like because it's a genre I don't normally pick up, but I miss the freedom of going in blind.

    Also a lot of times i found myself thinking i had bad taste or that i was missing something because i wasn't completely entralled by a book that all the internet folks seemed to like (eg: Norwegian wood, song of Achilles etc). But maybe, i just don't like them and it's ok? I'm trying to get more comfortable with my own tastes and its variance from popular opinion.

    On your last point, which is a thing I want to experience more often, I had a very lovely encounter with.
    Late summer of 2020 I have read all the books I have owned, and I decided to browse through my brother's bookshelf, he usually buys alot of random second hand books, and I came across the first book of the song of ice and fire in that collection, by that time I knew about the TV show but I was never interested enough to watch it, I just picked up the book fully expecting to just read the first chapter and putting it back down, oh boy was I wrong, I ended up loving the book, and later I talked with my friend about it, and he recommended me Berserk that was similar to it, I ended up loving that as well (I have avoided that book as well for some time now).
    So I am actually very glad for this encounter, because I found two of my all time favorite works through it.

    I never read book reviews, movie reviews; I usually trust my intuition and go with it. And I relate to the statement "at the end of the day, no one cares about your taste", on a spiritual level. Many people have called me "shallow" and many have called me "pretentious intellectual" so that dinner table talk did not work for me. I just talk about my likings with one or two people and I only ask them if they have any recommendations.

  • @barkspasenine
    @barkspasenine Před 2 lety

    Oh yeah, I 100% agree with your bookstore idea at the end. I'm very picky about the style of writing so I tend to flip to random pages of the book to sample a few sentences to get an overall idea of the author's style, since the first chapter and especially the initial "hook" of the book aren't necessarily true to the overall feel of the book. Rarely steers me wrong.
    One time I did buy a book simply because it had a cool title and it was highlighted at the store as being "amazing" and a real page turner... wound up being one of the worst books I've ever read, and I threw that abomination of literature across the room when I finished reading it. Why did I finish it? It was very short. And naively, despite being so angry and annoyed while reading it, I was still hoping to be surprised, and I wanted to understand why it had almost 5 stars on its online reviews. It's a bit embarrassing how enraged and irritated it made me (I ranted to a lot of people about how awful it was). :')

    I just go by my own experience, I never like to read indications or something like this, only if the person who are recommending knows me in person and has a feel that I could potentially like it. In general, if it makes me feel good, then I love it and don't care about the hype. Art is experience: It's for me, it's my experience, no one else can have it for you, in your place. There are alot of classics that I didn't finished and never will, for me, are empty words. Am I saying it's bad or good? No. It's only not what I want to consume. To impress people, are they liking me or the books that I read?! It never made sense to me to love people by these aspects. Makes more sense to them to go spend their time with the books who impresses them alot than with me then! Haha! Art taste is so personal! That's why it's impossible to label it as a "right" taste or "wrong" taste, I just feel that some big artists of the past made their way due to a couple of circunstances that made it possible, not because they were the only legends. (With no intentions to diminish none of them). You just enjoy what makes you happy! Remembering that art has the power of healing too... So, we may not like that weird song someone is listening due to the terrible lyrics, but for them, they may having an cartasis and it's taking off the trash off of their hearts, maybe! Who know, in the end?! Art has alot of papers in this world. And that's all is my personal perspective of course. Nice video as usual, Waldun!
