Yep, totally agree. It’s a toss up between him Edward III and Henry V. I’d say Henry II due to his skill, he had uprisings his whole reign and won. Sadly Richard gained the upper hand and I’d say that was due to the skill of king Philip Capet.

Henry II made the mistake of being paranoid of Strongbows intentions in Leinster Ireland in 1171. Henry set sail to quash any alternative Norman kingdoms arising there apon the death of a Leinster King prior to that. Henry foolishly ignored the Irish rightful replacements amd imposed the Norman De Lacy family there, and made himself lord of Ireland. The ramifications of Henry II rash decisions are still felt today. Not so clever now was he?

As a 3rd year law student, ill tell you how common law was really founded, it was first based on tribal celtic law, then it mixed a bit with roman continental civil law, then it was influenced a bit by anglo saxon customary law, and finally but crucially, it was cemented and codified for the first time, amended and improved upon, by the normans who are the ones that introduced the jury system trial of peers as well as the 12 traveling itinerant judges that traversed the shires of the realm, thereby for the first time instituting the implementation of a codified uniform national legal system with stare decisis (precedent) which was a huge change away from the disparate localised tribal laws of anglo saxons and various celts (the Norman era is usually cited as having the most impact on common law)
