Apart from watching, and listening to Gene play, what a wonderful treat it is to hear him!!..I grew up with Gene, Benny, Miller..oh My..so many wonderful musos..!! Any insights the Greats may impart, is fascinating to a Swing, Jazz Muso buff...Thank you Drumuitar, for posting..More please..
prime example of Gene's later work... savage quarter playing in the more bebop vein while still maintaining his own style. This song in particular is quite unusual, slightly austere and not the kind of thing Gene normally went in for but a spectacular performance that makes me wish there was more recordings of his in this style

Fantastic quartet! So together and neat. But well rounded and full at the same time. Krupa never disappoints. Magic. Just absolute magic!....And the get-together at the end was good too. Even Mike's cymbal frenzy.

Just love this. We are so lucky to have access to all this "new"material. I discovered Gene through finding Buddy Rich material. As much as l truly admire Buddy l have the opinion that Gene is the most natural, instinctive of all the drummers l have seen and heard. OK l'm no drummer so my opinion is only my own opinion.

@@thecrippledrummer Hi. Watched "The Gene Krupa Story" last night . His rise to stardom was perilous to say the least and his final years , not portrayed in the film, were rather lonely. And he was only 64 when he passed away. Still, l guess he lived a life that most of us could never imagine. Keep your great work up. Magic!
Gene Krupa is exciting! I don't know much about him, other than I admire his flair and skill. I first discovered him in Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall concert, and I said "who is that drummer?!?" and had to find out. I have some of his music now in my collection, and hope to find out as much as I can about him.

Krupa has better feel more soul more heart than Rich, it's the equivalent of Bonham to Moon

Another great example of why Krupa will be remembered more highly than Rich. Not one piece of arrogance in him. Not up himself or full of his own self importance like Rich either. It has been said by many and it is so true....without Gene Krupa there would have been no Buddy Rich. Some may argue that but when it comes to being a gentleman, Krupa beats Rich hands down. There is no comparison.
I have always felt that Rich was a technique monster, which allowed him to develop unmatched speed, but (to me) he wasn't a soul player, he wasn't a groove player, meaning he played more like a machine, not like a soulful drummer. That's why he shined in solos, but didn't bring anything unique or different to the rhythm section. Krupa could play with a band and make the walls sweat, get the people out of their chairs, and do it without any pyrotechnics. And that's a sign of a soulful player. Kenny Clark and Papa Jo where like that too, they could get the ballroom jumpin' without any fancy fills or rolls.
You know what's funny about guys who compare Gene K. to Buddy is that you guys miss the point. Gene is a Cadillac,smooth and easy. Buddy is a Ferrari,speed and power. Both represent EXACTLY what jazz is. Class,taste & supreme musicality as well as freedom of expression.
@@rickdavenport9538 You cannot compare the two, totally different styles. However, without Krupa there would have been no Rich as we know it. Krupa was the pioneer for putting the drummer at the front of a band instead of "behind it" so to speak. So all Buddy had to do was follow the same idea. He never thought of it. And that's ok. he did it his way. I think we should be praising today's drummers who are alive and kicking, instead of dwelling on the past so much.

Eddie Rivera - such a great tragedy that there are so many really great drummers that predated film, video and decent quality sound recording that had fantastic reputations, but for whom we have nothing to watch and often very little of any quality to listen to...

No, Gene misspoke. He should have said, "When I went into semi-retirement in 1960." That year, he had a heart attack.

Love Krupa...not sure why Chick Webb was not mentioned though.
In interviews where he's talking about his influences, he always mentions Chick Webb in a pretty big way. But here, he's only talking about drummers that might've been known to the general public in the 1920s, before he himself was. Chick Webb did not come to national prominence, outside of Harlem, until the mid 30s, about the same time Gene Krupa did(Krupa had been recording with various band since 1927). Guys like Ben Pollack and Abe Lyman were known to the public in the 20's, not as much for their drumming, but for leading dance bands, although they were really good drummers, they were not quite in the league as people like Webb, Krupa, Jones, Rich, Catlett or even forerunners like Dodds and Singleton.
6:28 ish, 🤔 I think the context was a secondary question about him being first to “get out in front of a band.” He’s giving names of earlier famous drummer-bandleaders, who by the 60s weren’t famous for drumming, rather than his biggest influences. Lol after 30yrs of answering the same 5 questions every time, you’d want to change tack now and again.

Not at this point. He had a 10 year contract that started in 1947 where he received a percentage but it’d ended by this time.
