    You are very lucky to have great weather... so many AT thru hiker videos show significant rain and wind and cold at the summit of the "moose". Enjoy the Whites... one of our favorite places on earth.

    Hey Jay, enjoying your videos. I did Mt. Moosilauke SB due to the grades. Too steep downhill the way you went. Also stayed at the same motel as you. Good luck in the next about 350 miles. As they say when you enter NH. You've gone 80% of the way, but you have only done 60% of the work.

    The little white flowers with green leaves that you said looked liked they’d been planted around the boulder are groundcover dogwood. Look at them….they look just like the dogwood flowers of cornus Florida.

    That was a beast of a climb. I've heard it's known for that though. The downhill would be much tougher on me, but you two crushed it. You would at the end of the 'Kanc', the Kancamangus Highway in Lincoln. It's a very pretty area. June would show lady slippers around there that are rare but a beautiful pink color with some other rarer white and even rarer yellow ones. I'm blown away with both of your stamina to tackle these ascents and descents. Awesome job indeed. Stay safe my friends.

    Remember -- when you are above tree line --- you are essentially way up in Canada (weatherwise) and it can snow -- or at least be close to freezing any time bad weather blows in from the west. Hike safe and be nice to Tina.

    Something I’ve noted w my own feet as I age….you loose the fat pads on the bottom…less anatomical cushion. I’ve been buying shoes a half size bigger and putting an inexpensive thin but cushier insole under the Superfeet. So far that’s helped w pain on the underside of my heels and across the underside of the balls of my feet. I change them out every couple weeks…may not help for everyone or w every type of shoe but I’ve been able to call a truce w my own paws. I know there are shoes out there that are built w extra cushioning to begin with, but I’m stubbornly clinging to the same brand I’ve loved for 25 yrs. (That stubborn streak is what got me into long distance hiking to begin w…can’t throw a ball, can’t run fast, can’t make a basket…but I can walk. Add a good helping of stubborn and a long distance backpacker is born!)

    Glad that "The Moose" gave you great views. My last trip up it was clear on South Peak and I got great footage of cloud movement, but by the time we got to North Peak it was completely socked in. I can get pretty crowded up there in nice weather for sure. But Beaver Brook is infamous for it's difficulty because of how steep it is and because of the stream. It gets SUPER slippery. One of my goals for this winter is a winter summit of The Moose, up Beaver Brook.

  • @adkeric
    @adkeric Před 2 lety +1

    A lot of the scratches you're seeing on the rocks are from crampons or microspikes from winter ascents. Not just from trekking poles.

    As you continue through the Whites, keep your eyes open for Grey Jays. they are a medium sized bird that is grey and white. They are scavengers and they are used to people. If they are around, you can put peanuts in your hand and they will eat directly from your hand.

    Great reminder that how you use your foot can respond to training. It follows that almost noone should be relying on their shoes for so-called support. We have feet that are marvels of evolutionary engineering instead of peg-legs for a reason, let them work!

    Another reason alpine plants are so short is because of the wind. Taller flowers would be blown over.

  • @MaxSadler
    @MaxSadler Před 2 lety +1

    Jay - your foot pain + wear pattern on your shoes indicate you are over-correcting your pronation, likely because you add super feet orthotics to your shoes.
    My suggestion (from a lifelong runner and someone who has worked in the running shoe industry for years) - those Asics aren’t the best quality. I’m not saying all Asics are bad, but they make different tiers of shoes, and those are in a lower tier. The price point you should be looking at is ~$120. Buy higher quality shoes, ditch the super feet.
