I had the corporate IT job day after day but it wasn't fulfilling. After finding out about solo long distance backpacking I decided to go on a lot of long backpacking trips and otherwise live out of my converted 4Runner. Driving around this great country and see everything I feel like seeing, mostly outdoor activities, is what I really wanted to do.
In 2018 I thru hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, in 2019 I thru hiked the Wonderland Trail, in 2021 I thru hiked the Arizona Trail, and now in 2022 I will be thru hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Please join me as I spend the rest of my life exploring this great country!

Exploring Kenai Peninsula, Russian River and Homer
From Seward we wanted to check out Russian River on the way through since it's an extremely popular place for salmon fishermen. We figured it would be too crowded 5o fosh but we wanted to see at least the red salmon swimming up stream and up the falls as well as talk to some fishermen and wome. to see how things were going. After that we proceeded west towards Soldotna and Kenai but decided to visit Homer before spending more time in the Soldotna area layer.

Visiting Seward and Fishing For Red Salmon
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed 14 dny
We heard that the red salmon numbers were good in Seward so we headed that way to make our first attempt at salmon fishing. Lucky for us we were reasonably successful and had plenty of time to explore the nearby areas as well. Seward, much like Valdez, is surrounded by snow capped mountains and absolutely beautiful. Lucky for us it had plenty of red salmon, or also called sockeye salmon! Lists ...
We Take a Wildlife and Glacier Tour in Valdez, Alaska!

We knew we wanted to take at least one sightseeing cruise while in Alaska, and maybe just one since they're all so expensive. In Valdez the weather was good and we spoke to a company about how their tours run and they had a military discount so it sounded like the optimal combination. We signed up for the LuLu Belle, a supposed 7 hour cruise which often takes 8-9 hours depending on if there's a...

A Few More Days Fishing In Utah

I like learning about the fishing! So cool you just taught yourself recently, makes it feel very doable. I know that must help a lot with the budget too.
I was just at the Russian River falls last weekend, the water level is noticeably lower now. I might go back up as a huge influx of Red Salmon just hit the Kenai.
Nice video . Were you saw the tressel bridge. down the bottom there is the remains of loco 210 when she rolled down the hill. At Kings lake there is the remains of a tunnel that was started and abanodened, that metal pipe and all the wood at the top was part of the Corona shown sheads. There is a book called the rails that climb that tells the history of that pass
Just love these vlogs. Always wanted to visit Alaska. Beautiful. Been following your adventures since the AT. Better than anything on tv.😊
Good video with lots of good views, big moose, so let's keep on hiking 😊
The size comparison of Mama moose to her baby!!! Whoa! Awesome! ❤
I love that place I was 21 got first credit card and flew to Homer and stayed until I ran out of money and credit card limit..one of the best times of my life!
Great review, very informative with pros and cons of both.
Great video! It’s pronounced Vy-yay Caldera. It’s in north central NM. Beautiful country. The toilet paper at your campsite was terrible!
One of my favorite trails. Semper Fi
fitville shoes are made for wide feet/give them a try
I just purchased a used original Tucktec model so this was really helpful. I'm so excited to use it! I couldn't afford the newer model right now.
You film what ever you want to Jay & we'll still watch it. Yeah it's cool watching you get excited when you catch something & as you fish I'm busy watching the water & if any wildlife peaks out of the bushes. There's so much to see & look at in your vids I find myself rewind so much even after watching a vid a 2nd or 3rd time your vids are that good.
We were salmon fishing and a bald eagle dropped out of the trees and landed right on a salmon across the river! It then walked out and ate it on the shore. Pretty amazing things to see out there for sure but didn't catch it on video.
Spent 2 of the best years of my life in Anchorage @@JayWandersOut . Thanks for sharing your Adventures with us. ps Thanks for all you do. Not just for us but those Close to you.
You caught it on a slow day. There's times it gets so crowded it'll literally be elbow to elbow people fishing.
Thank You Jay & Tina for taking us along with you. That was cool watching that Glacier break apart like that.
Fun video! At around 29:30 you talk about the kayak spinning toward the right. That sort of thing typically happens when there is dead water or eddying water close to shore (out of the main flow of the current). So that dead water will pull your bow or stop it while your back end--which is in the main flow of the current--gets pushed downstream. This dynamic will indeed spin you. When the dynamics are forceful, the water close to shore will actually flow back up river, forming an eddy, It can be fun to "eddy out"--to do eddy turns, spinning your boat behind a rock (for example) and end up sitting in the calm water near shore, while the main current rages in the middle of the stream or river, your boat meanwhile pointing upstream.
what if I carry a portable speaker ?
I like to hear a bit about the fishing. Alaska is about surviving in the wild and on your own and fishing is a large part of that.
Hey Jay! Thanks for the update! Glad you are having a good time in Alaska!
Good luck with the pike! It's my favorite fish
Agreed Jay - no need for fishing content. There are lots of CZcamsrs that concentrate on fishing. Bring on the sightseeing/hiking/off-roading! I want to see the Arctic Circle!
Safe travels. One question. During your Appalachian Trail and Camino de Santiago hikes, Tina was a consistent part of your videos and I enjoyed getting to know her. Since she joined you on this trip, however, we barely see her. This can't be an accident, so I'm curious as to the rationale.
She's probably just not wanting to be on the videos. It's her life and she's there to spend time with Jay, not be a video star. That's my guess, anyway!
@@magicaltrails and I’m fine if that’s her choice. I just noticed the difference and wondered why.
@@UKCG_2 She doesn't vlog her own trips (just posts insta photos) so I suspect that being "on" so much for Jay's channel is probably just not her cup of tea.
Even when she did a hike with Feral & a couple more she was rarely on vid. Then again Tina's Trail name is Pocket Rocket.
I just really don’t like being on camera 🙈
Thanks for the information, Jay. Happy and safe travels, enjoy your trip. Viele Grüße an Tina!
Alaska is someplace all sportsmen have to experience. One thing about Salmon, when they enter Fresh water from the ocean their muscles are actually starting to break down. The best place to catch salmon is in salt water. You’ll hear the term it’s silver, as they start to die their skin colors change.
Excellent review, I just bought the lake sport looking forward to using it.
Disconcerting to learn glacier is melting so fast.
Be careful on that highway up to Prudhoe! Slow down for the semi trucks passing the other direction. Follow the speed limit. Use a pull-out instead of using the shoulder if you want to stop. I have driven that road for work from Fairbanks to Prudhoe a few times and can tell you that it’s a doozie!
Nice video with some nice fish, so let's keep on hiking 😊
Try using your hands a little more when you talk…..so funny!!! You look so excited!
Looks like an amazing adventure! Don't hold back fishing content! It's still a wonderful outdoors experience!
Jay, Where is Tina in your videos. I’ve always enjoyed your calm demeanor and happy attitude, but when you and Tina are together, she brings the best out of you. Please tell Tina that we miss seeing her on the channel.
I’m definitely going to watch your next couple of videos. I’ve been to Homer with my wife to visit some of her family and I really want to see you take a 4Runner to the Arctic Circle. If get myself a 4Runner, now I’ll know if I can plan the ultimate adventure. Thanks for all you create!
Beautiful! Hi Tina and Jay!
I have a Gen 1 (kcikstarter) boat and I agree, it is easy to buckle if you put a lot of weight in it. I hear the Gen 2/3 boats with the rotating latches and fold-inside sides are more robust.
Congratulations on your first bear encounter...and a great video! I think I would only panic if it was a mother with her cubs. But from what I understand, most of these solo male bear encounters on the trail are simply about the bear wanting to go somewhere and preferring the hiking trail, to the dense forest, to get there. You now have another memory for a lifetime!
Sexy
Hi Jay! So cool you’re catching those delicious fresh fish. The closing pic says it all! Thanks for sharing!
I'm impressed with your photography. I hope to as well next month (August). Interesting that the parking lot was filled but you appear to have Wire Pass/Buckskin Gulch to yourself. Does that mean most of the vehicles belong to The Wave lottery winners?
People really get spread out and yes, I think you're correct in that many are there for the wave.
CANADA, 9.984.670 km², over 20,000 bears, from grizzlies to polar bears --- so: 1 bear / 500 km². ROMANIA, country of southeastern Europe , 238.397 km², 6 000 brown bears --- so: 1 bear / 40 km². We have bears in Europe ! Too many (especially in RO)!
Thanks for posting the video. Good information
Excellent video. Although yours is the first in which the notch looked outright dangerous. She was semi-slipping on loose shale. I thought the path was more clearly defined than that. Was it entirely covered by the snow? Your improvised path looked dicey!
I love this trip, and wondering how long did it take you to get to Alaska from Canada.?? And to the place where you filmed this video?? Love it and thank you so much
We took it slow and took almost a month through Canada. We also went to McCarthy then Valdez before getting to Seward and took plenty of time. If you really wanted to you can get to places pretty quickly overall.
rather, if he hears the bell he thinks it's a sheep, a cow or a goat....😄😄😄
Wow 19 bears just on the one section of the drive! Amazing. What's the name of the Korean dish? Looks perfect for camping and traveling.
Not sure when or where you’re going but.. Have you tried you hand at halibut fishing? I brought home over 100 pounds of halibut fillets and 35 pounds of salmon fillets. I was in Homer but I’m sure they catch halibut there.
Our car has a 20L fridge and no freezer so besides mailing fish home there was no other way to bring extra meat home. Also we're on a budget so no charters for us. Generally we can keep 2 salmon maybe 3 if they're small at once then run off somewhere and do other things while we eat salmon every day. There was one spot in Homer with good shore fishing for smaller halibut but we really like our salmon.
Good video with lots of good beautiful views, nice fishing, so let's keep on hiking 😊
Awesome! That is my dream trip. Go fishing and hunting in Alaska. The only reason I haven't done it? I might not ever leave. Thanks for sharing your trip so far.
The fishing is pretty awesome so far. You should go for it!
Why do people kick fish? Answer at 13:20.
So funny to see all the people lined up in the water fishing👀🤣
Awesome Jay! Sounds like you and Tina are having a lot of fun on your adventure.
