I hope they allow The Revolution, The Time, Appolonia 6, and Jill Jones, to have substantial in put, because they lived it.
While some watch the musical, i ll watch the original movie.
I will *probably* go see the musical if/when it comes to Minneapolis after its Broadway run. However, I must admit, the addition of "cancel culture" elements into the fabric of the narrative concerns and upsets me. Purple Rain is a product of its time: people (including Branden Jacobs-Jenkins) should understand and respect this, rather than pushing for drastic changes to the source material. Applying 2024 sensibilities to older characters and stories is a disturbing trend that serves to sweep historical context under the rug rather than facing it, analyzing it, and learning from it. Just my opinion.
I'm not sure if any true fans/friends would agree with making Purple Rain into a stage musical. It's already a musical. Leave it alone. I can hear Prince yelling, "F*ck off!"
Of course I can't speak on his behalf, but if past precident is our best predictor for future behavior... I don't believe Prince would be on board with this. Surely he was approached with this idea before and rejected it....
He didn't often go for others attempts to recreate his material, or use his brand. Peace 💜
PS I like honoring Prince and his original works. I don't personally need to have PR attempted to be recreated live on the stage, particularly without him in it. Sorry, there can only be one... He's the OG and there will never be another who can do Prince justice (as we've seen people try and fail) or capture his unique essence in a knock off. Nothing compares, to Prince... 😉
Personally I think that if they’re gonna alter the story of purple rain so much I think they would’ve been better off adapting stories that Prince actually came up with for musicals or adapt under the cherry moon as a broadway production
I was excited when I first heard about this yesterday but hearing that Branden Jacobs-Jenkins did not like the movie makes me wonder why they are attempting this at all.
Hope it’s well done and brings new people to listen to his music
Whoever plays the kid has to sing like a bird ,play awesome guitar 🎸 piano and dance like the kid and look like the kid 💜💜

My question is how are they gonna do the iconic Lake Minnetonka scene in a Broadway stage musical? Have whoever plays Apollonia jump in a kiddie inflatable swimming pool? Will she go topless or will they try to make it family friendly and censor everything that gave the movie it's r-rated edge? I hope not. This is an adaptation of the film. The movie was the gateway into Prince/The Time discography for many gen x youth in the '80s. A Broadway musical they hope could do the same to reach gen z so I'm not against the Broadway musical idea in theory but it could easily turn into a parody of the film instead of a tribute. I hope it's a tribute and not just another parody of Prince.

NOPE! The fact that they’re trying to “update” the story w/a more Gen-Z take, w/The Kid on the hook to being Cancelled…?! That’s a non-starter. Even if PRINCE were alive, and in some Bizarre twist he was cool w/a Broadway adaptation of “Rain”(which we fans Know he wouldn’t be). He wouldn’t let anyone “update” anything in that or any other way, unless it came from HIMSELF!! Best way to celebrate the 40th Anniversary…
1) Rerelease the movie in theaters.
2) Release a Re-Remastered, SDE of the album. Complete w/book, more Vault outtakes and unreleased songs, and more live concert/rehearsal footage/videos, on bonus Blu-ray.
3) Have the Revolution & The Time, play a few Special shows in NY, CHI, L.A., performing the album, and Ice Cream Castles in their entirety.
4) Release the movie on 4k Blu-ray for the first time! Peace. O+>

I don't think any him or herself respecting Prince fan is gonna like this musical. All the money in the world won't make it anything we are going to like. Prince is not approving it either, no remake has ever been better than his work, so why bother? Put the money in a barbie musical or something like that.

No, no, and no. Broadway needs to get back to the Broadway of old and make original productions and stop adapting films. Nobody writes anymore. Hollywood is doing too many remakes, and Broadway is making plays out of too many films or doing the same productions over and over.

Sorry, but this is a horrible idea and should never be made. It was great as a movie and I'm fine with that. I'm sure The Kid himself would have been against this idea. Once he made the music, movie, and film, he pretty much moved on to the next thing. If he were to create a Broadway musical I'm sure it would be a brand new concept with an original story and original music. No need to remake a classic that would most likely not be as great as the movie.
