My Uberti 1858 new model army revolver using the Howell .45 colt conversion cylinder tends to hit about 4 to 8 inches high at 12 to 15 yards distance. My favorite target is cantaloupes so I aim a few inches below the cantaloupes

I have the 5.5 inch Pietta Cimarron, with all the original peacekeeper features, set screw and fixed firing pin,, and want to get this shorter barrel version, with the same original features. Seems they harder to find..
It seems like availability of certain models are in cycles. There are a bunch of a certain model for sale at the same time, then that one disappears and another or two seem to flood gunbroker and the dealers.
Just in terms of fun and intuitive shootin', do you prefer the SAA or the Schofield? I'll probably eventually own 5 or 6 old-timey revolvers, but I would like to make my money count. Them Schofields are awefully proud of themselves, judging by the price. I'd like an open-top Navy and an Outlaw, as well, but I'd just like your opinions.
Well....I couldn't pick one over the others. There are aspects of the ergonomics of each that lead some to prefer one over the other, but it's really subjective. Just holding the Schofield, it never felt like it would be "quick" with that gripframe and hammer...but..it's not slow. It's not as awkward as it seemed it would be. I happen to love a Navy Colt .36 handling, balance, grip...probably more than any of the others, so the open top Navy is a close to that feel (though it seems a little beefier). The SAA is an awesome handler, too. You see...I really can't say which I like most. I have a variety more for the variation in my interest and mood. One day I feel more like one than the other. It might be that one day I'm in the mood to watch a show or movie that features prominently one gun, and I just feel more into carrying that gun that day/week/month. It really can be as simple as that for me. I believe that they are all as capable as the hand wielding it. I would say that if you aim to get several different ones, I'd let finances dictate the order. If I have $500, I'll get a $500 gun. If I have $1000, I'll get the Schofield while i have the money. It's easier for me to come up with $500 than $1000 later on.
plowboysghost Wonderful answer. Thanks, brother. In the end, I’ll own em all...and then I’ll die and return to dust. Lol. In the meantime, you’ve helped me decide on the Navy as my first purchase.
@@adammeade2300 I've got that Man With No Name Conversion in .38 and I love it. I aim to buy an Open Top with the Navy grip but in .45 Colt. I haven't looked at the weights, but I'd almost bet that the .45 Open Top will be lighter and closer to the handling of the Navy .36 cap and ball than the .38 Open Top.....but that's all guessing since I haven't held the Open Top Navy .45 Colt.
Good video Plowboy, I have the same pistol with the same point of aim dilema, can't bring myself to start filing on the front sight. At 20 feet they are dead nuts on.
I really like your on-camera persona, it's funny yet informative. You mentioned you have a favorite load for the .45 Colt, would you kindly share it? Like you, I too have a fav load for my Ruger Vaquero-Bisley, 5.5-inch barrel in .45 Colt, (the older model built like a tank). Instead of filing the front sight, would you consider coming up with a different load that would shoot closer to point-of-aim? I gave you a "Like" and subscribed! Thanks again!!!!
Thank you for the like and the subscription. My favorite smokless (std. pressure) load is 8.2-gr of Universal under a 255-gr Lee RF bullet. It's a great load, in my opinion, and I've heavily invested in it for all seven of my guns chambered in .45 Colt...having 1400-1500 rds of it so loaded. It didn't bother me a bit to file down the front sight to get it hitting where I wanted it to. I've done that with Rugers, too.
I really appreciate your videos. Nice truck you got. Wish you well with your new revolver. Why is that front sight so far off target? I'm trying to stay away from the gunshops. Couple guns I want way too much. Take Care and keep cool, Mr. PlowBoy!
I reckon it's just thew nature of the fixed sight revolver beast. As many as I've owned and still own, it's rare that I get one that hits to the sights with my handload. It's really no big deal when they're shooting low and you have a lot of front sight height to shave off. My local dealer/enabler ordered a bunch of things he knew I'd want. Told him he was trying to run me broke...heheh. Thanks James!
I am so torn between this and an SKS. I don’t have a lot of money right now, so it’s really one or the other. The SKS is only getting harder to find and more expensive, which is irritating, hence why I want to jump on it now, albeit late to the party. However these specific guns with the four click hammer I also would like to get on now, because all the companies who used to make them seem to have been switching to the three clickers over the past few years. There’s nothing wrong with those guns, but I’d rather have a more mechanically authentic model like the one you have in this video. It also doesn’t help that both the guns I’m looking at are pretty similarly priced. I just can’t decide
@@jessewoodsonjames6669 I actually didn’t get the saa, I ended up going with the SKS. Funny you replied now, I just started looking into these guns again, not very seriously though. Thanks. I just got distracted and it's pretty humid....rough on my asthma. I tend to stay in a little more this time of year. That standard load I use is my Lee 452-255 RF bullet that actually weighs a tick over 260-gr, over 8.2gr of Universal.
@@plowboysghost Thanks sir. I had forgotten the 255 gr in 45 Colt is what the 240 gr is to the .44 Magnum. Maybe they should make a Bird's head in Ruger .480 then you could load some Ruger .480 "special" to shoot in it for manageable recoil...lol! Thanks again!
@@redesert_boy8202 Yep. 255-ish is the standard....in my thinking. Man, that .480 is one heck of a caliber. A 400-gr cast bullet at even "modest" velocities is a serious penetrator. Reduced loads for "lighter" recoil...say 850-900 fps, would still be very effective on deer sized game and bigger.

Hello Plowboysghost, love the channel. I was trying to find online the Cimarron Frontier .45 that you did a video about back on July 23. Can you tell me the model number of yours, it is confusing when looking online as they have so many versions. Thanks
Mine is Cimarron Model # PP410. I plan to do a follow up video with it (and the Uberti 1866 Yellowboy) since it/both were hitting low from the factory with my handloads. I have since took some height off the front sight(s)....and now can hit better with them :)
Dear Plowboy: I have enjoyed your channel and posts for some time. I recently acquired a brand new Pietta Cimarron Frontier 45 Colt 4 5/8" barrel identical to yours. I love it, such a smooth easy action. I use Cowboy type loads with 200gn RNFP cast bullets at about 800 fps with HP-38 or 30+gn fffg. It is very accurate and prints only slightly high for me at 10-15 yds.. I have one question for you. Is the cylinder bushing really a separate part as indicated on Cimarron FA parts diagrams? If so, how do you remove it for cleaning and lubing? Mine sure doesn't budge! Any other Cimarron owners out there please feel free to chime in also. Thank You for your channel Doris J
THe parts diagrams I see for Pietta built SAA clones all over the interwebz does indeed show the bushing it removable. This is what I found elsewhere: " Posted April 30, 2017 What a coincidence. I visited with EMF at the NRA meeting on Friday and asked some questions about the GWII. I asked about the "removable" bushing. The nice lady pulled the cylinder pin and explained that the bushing is press fit into the cylinder so that it does not turn within the cylinder. That way, any wear is confined to the bushing and the cylinder pin: " a six dollar part against a six dollar part." She did show me how the bushing could be driven out but I take it that this is not needed or desired for normal maintenance. " I removed mine using the basepin inserted through the rear of the bushing and lightly drove it out...using penetrating oil. I pressed the bushing back in and called it a day. For now..... I'll decide later on whether I'll modify it. I don't really want to booger anything up today :)
@@plowboysghost Thank you for that information. Seems like a not such good move on Pietta's part. If you do decide to remove and polish down to fit as is historically correct maybe you could do video on this topic. In any case keep them coming as I do so enjoy them Doris J
I just bought a Cimmeron Model P 4-3/4”. So is it a Uberti or Pietta? The gun hasn’t arrived, it’s headed to my FFL. I’m confused about Cimmeron and who manufactures their guns. I saw on another channel the “P” meant a Pietta? Is that true? Thanks for the help
What's the model number on the one you have coming? " Model P" doesn't mean Pietta. I *believe* the Model P is a Uberti gun. Most of the Pietta guns that I know of that Cimarron sells have a model number with the prefix "PP", but I don't think that all of their Piettas necessarily have that prefix. The one in this video has "PP" model number and is a "Frontier" model, which is one of Cimarron's pietta designations. A lot of their Uberti guns have the prefix "CA", but then again, I don't believe all of them necessarily do. Bear in mind that I rarely talk to anyone at Cimarron and it's as a customer when I do. They don't endorse me or help me in any way, no matter how of their guns I own and have owned...nor how many I've helped them sell. I've never approached them in a business/CZcams kind of way, but I's bet I'm not "the sort" they'd endorse, anyway.

Heheh...I have to take into account that there are a lot of good northerners who may not have seen earlier videos of mine where I explain the distinction between "northerner" and "yankee".
More than likely, most people did fire a single action revolver in the 19th Century with one hand, however...there is no way of knowing just how many also fired them with two hands. I'd wager that two handed firing was a LOT more common when the moment/situation dictated accuracy meant more than speed. I'm a let form follow function kind of guy...and I'd bet that practicality led the people of that time to shoot however was more efficient based on their experience. They didn't have the interwebz to tell them that their experience was "wrong".
8.2 gr of Universal under a Lee .452-255RF. It's still std. pressure load (8.5 gr max) but above the "cowboy max" of 7.8 gr. Its one of only two.45 Colt loads I run in all my std pressure replica sixguns and leverguns...the other being the same bullet SPG lubed over 40 gr of 3f bp.

I figure these will be dead on at SOME distance or another, but I'll take some height off the front sight...probably in the next few days.. Thanks!
Also Plowboy, I use Trail-boss powder and 200 grainer lead cast, leave the 250 grain plated bullets for the Winchester.
How about another video with your Marlin 1895 CBA?

I recently acquired a brand new Pietta Cimarron Frontier 45 Colt 4 5/8" barrel identical
to yours. I love it, such a smooth easy action. I use Cowboy type loads with 200gn RNFP cast bullets at about 800 fps with HP-38 or 30+gn fffg.
It is very accurate and prints only slightly high for me at 10-15 yds.. I have one question for you. Is the cylinder bushing really a separate part
as indicated on Cimarron FA parts diagrams? If so, how do you remove it for cleaning and lubing? Mine sure doesn't budge! Any other
Cimarron owners out there please feel free to chime in also.
Thank You for your channel
Doris J
Addendum: correction the proper name of the part is "base pin bushing"
THe parts diagrams I see for Pietta built SAA clones all over the interwebz does indeed show the bushing it removable.
This is what I found elsewhere:
" Posted April 30, 2017
What a coincidence. I visited with EMF at the NRA meeting on Friday and asked some questions about the GWII. I asked about the "removable" bushing. The nice lady pulled the cylinder pin and explained that the bushing is press fit into the cylinder so that it does not turn within the cylinder. That way, any wear is confined to the bushing and the cylinder pin: " a six dollar part against a six dollar part."
She did show me how the bushing could be driven out but I take it that this is not needed or desired for normal maintenance. "
I removed mine using the basepin inserted through the rear of the bushing and lightly drove it out...using penetrating oil.

Cycle that thing 1 handed like its supposed to.
